    Translating recipes from Chinese into Polish : potential problems and possible solutions

    Translation of culinary recipes has been arelatively understudied field and very little research has been done on the difficulties of translating recipes between Chinese and Polish. This paper attempts to classify and analyze problems which may be encountered by the Polish translators of Chinese recipes and uggests possible solutions to these problems, referring to earlier examples. The discussed problems include: culturally specific names and descriptions of Chinese dishes, the use of ingredients that are unknown in Poland, descriptions of cooking methods that are specific to Chinese cuisine, different units of weight used in Poland, China and Taiwan. The paper demonstrates that in order to fully understand and translate a recipe, the translator must possess an in-depth knowledge of both the source language and culture
    Tłumaczenia przepisów kulinarnych to dziedzina, której ciągle poświęca się stosunkowo mało uwagi, szczególnie w kontekście tłumaczeń z języków nieeuropejskich. W niniejszym artykule autorka przedstawia wstępną typologię i analizę potencjalnych problemów, które mogą się pojawić w procesie tłu- maczenia takiego typu tekstów z chińskiego na polski. Omawia również ich możliwe rozwiązania, odwołując się do istniejących przykładów. Podczas przekładania przepisów kulinarnych z chińskiego na polski kłopot tłumaczowi może sprawić sama nazwa chińskiej potrawy, jej składniki nieznane w Polsce, różnice w jednostkach wagowych używanych w Polsce, Chinach i na Tajwanie, charakterystyczne dla kuchni chińskiej sposoby gotowania oraz określenia mocno związane z kulturą lokalną. Poprawne przełożenie takiego rodzaju tekstów wymaga więc od polskiego tłumacza głębokiego rozumienia nie tylko języka, ale również i kultury źródłowej.

    Between foreignization and domestication : challenges for Polish translator of a classical Chinese novel on the example of female characters in "The Dream of the Red Chamber"

    The present paper analyzes the possibility of finding a balance between foreignization and domestication in translation, using the author’s own Polish translation of several fragments from the famous 18th century Chinese classic Honglou Meng (The Dream of the Red Chamber). In the first part of my paper, the terms “foreignization” and “domestication” are explained together with a brief introduction to the debate in the field of translation studies. Subsequently, several examples of three types of problems a translator may face while translating this novel are given, including translating descriptions of women’s looks, exotic clothing and women’s behavior. To each fragment a foreignized solution and a domesticated one are given for the readers to compare. The paper ends with observations on the pros and cons of two strategies, concluding that there is hardly a fixed balance point for a translator to stand on. The translator has to make (sometimes rather difficult) decisions based on the expected target and purpose of translation.

    Problems of translating personal names in Classic Chinese novels : an analysis of the Polish translations of "Jing Ping Mei" and "Xiyou Ji"

    The present article aims to analyse Polish translations of personal names in two Chinese classical novels: the fantasy novel "Xiyou Ji" (西遊記), translated by Tadeusz Żbikowski into Polish in two parts – as "Małpi bunt" (Wu 1976) and "Wędrówka na zachód" (Wu 1984) – and "Jin Ping Mei" (金瓶梅), translated by Irena Sławińska-Hu Peifang, Jerzy Chociłowski and Ryszard Chmielewski as "Kwiaty śliwy w złotym wazonie" (2001). "Xiyou Ji" and "Jin Ping Mei" are well known not only within Chinese-speaking societies but also in other East Asian countries. The Polish translations of these two novels are two of the few translations of classical Chinese literature made in Poland. Personal names appearing in these novels have been analysed in terms of various translation strategies employed by the novels’ translators. The aim of this analysis is to determine which strategies were preferred by Polish translators of Chinese classical novels and to identify which considerations could have influenced their choices. The article argues that the strategies most frequently used by Polish translators are transcription, translation, modification, and addition. It has also been found that Polish translators often employ two or more strategies simultaneously to translate one personal name.

    Between Foreignization and Domestication. Translation of Descriptions of Women from Chinese to Polish Based on the Case of Chinese Classical Novel Honglou Meng

    The present thesis analyses the possibility of finding a balance between foreignization and domestication in translation. The problem is discussed based on the author’s own Polish translation of several fragments from the Hónglóu Mèng (previously translated into English as The Dream of the Red Chamber or as The Story of the Stone) – the 18th century novel well known in the Chinese speaking societies – with a focus on depictions of women.In the first chapter, I will define the terms “foreignization” and “domestication” according to the current research on the subject. Then an explanation would be given on how they are related to the translation of classical novels from Chinese to Polish.The second chapter contains a general introduction to the novel in question, including the historical background when the novel was written, the biography of the author, the academic studies concerning the work, the storyline and main characters of the novel and its outstanding literary values, all of which provides the reason why I chose it as the example for this paper. The focus on female characters in this paper is also explained, as the novel has been famous for its detailed description of females in 18th century China.The analysis of the problems in translation begins in the third chapter. The chapter is divided into three subsections that deal with the following issues: translating proper names of the female characters of the Hónglóu Mèng; translating descriptions of their looks and clothing; translating descriptions of their behaviour. The paper ends with observations on how to find the balance between foreignization and domestication on the example of Hónglóu Mèng. The translator does not choose between foreignization or domestication, but looks for solutions to find balance between them. In this way, the translator can preserve culturally specific elements of the translated text while enabling the readers to understand the context and implicatures of the original.
    Niniejsza praca analizuje możliwość znalezienia równowagi między egzotyzacją a udomowieniem w tłumaczeniu. Problem został omówiony na podstawie mojego autorskiego tłumaczenia kilku fragmentów z Hónglóu Mèng. To dzieło, znane poza Chinami pod tytułem Sen czerwonego pawilonu jest osiemnastowieczną powieścią koncentrującą się na życiu ówczesnych kobiet.W pierwszym rozdziale rozprawy definiuję terminy „egzotyzacja" i „udomowienie" w oparciu o aktualne badania zagadnienia. Następnie wyjaśniam, dlaczego są one związane z tłumaczeniem klasycznej powieści z chińskiego na polski.Drugi rozdział zawiera ogólne wprowadzenie do powieści. Omawiam w nim historyczne tło czasów, w których dzieło powstało, przedstawiam biografię autora oraz stan badań naukowych nad nim uwzględniając fabułę, bohaterów powieści oraz kwestię jego wartości literackich. Wskazuję, że jest ono bezcenne i znane z racji koncentracji na postaciach kobiecych osiemnastowiecznych Chin. Wyjaśniam, że te czynniki stały się zaczynem do moich rozważań o trudnościach przekładu. Analiza problemów w tłumaczeniu rozpoczyna się w trzecim rozdziale. Rozdział podzielony jest na trzy części, które dotyczą następujących zagadnień: tłumaczenie nazw własnych postaci kobiecych z Hónglóu Mèng; tłumaczenie opisów ich wyglądu i odzieży; tłumaczenie opisów ich zachowania.Praca kończy się z obserwacją, iż tłumacz nie dokonuje wyboru między egzotyzacją a udomowieniem podczas przekładania, a szuka rozwiązań, które pozwolą znaleźć równowagę między nimi. W ten sposób tłumaczony tekst pozwala zachować specyficzne elementy danej kultury i jednocześnie pozwala czytelnikowi zrozumieć kontekst i implikaturę oryginału.
