The article presents the Prime Minister Mackenzie King’s personal convictions and philosophy referring to Canadian relations with Britain and with Europe in general. It attempts to explain the reasons of Mackenzie King’s anti-Imperial and anti-European attitude through analysis of the excerpts of his biography, diaries and parliamentary speeches. The article shows the tremendous influence Mackenzie King’s personality and his own beliefs had on Canadian foreign policy, Imperial relations and how his view of Canada’s independent diplomacy shaped a new era of Canadian-European relations and contributed to the recognition of Canada abroad. The article concentrates on the selected political and historical events (the Statute of Westminster of 1931 in particular) that loosened the ties between Canada and Britain. In particular the emphasis is put on these changes in the bilateral Canadian-British relations and these actions and decisions undertaken by Mackenzie King or his administration that changed the Canadian government’s approach to European affairs and reshaped both the perception of Europe in Canada and the perception of Canada in Europe.

In the various versions of democracy’s orientations around the world nowadays, we can discern cracks, but still not a crucial break from the project of (an) open society. The inner reality of this phenomenon can be deciphered and dealt with in many ways. The two case studies (The Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards as well as Subpoetics International) analysed in the article, present theatre as healing and pedagogical forces, which can save the core of Open Society. Generally speaking, this can be achieved by strengthening intercultural dialogue and empathy while applying strict rules of the craft and technique. The two mentioned theatre-performance groups present high-functioning varieties of open society and also focus on the threats and obstacles which may be encountered in contemporary society. Beyond varied activities, the Workcenter and Subpoetics also carry out educational and workshop-based work connecting people from all paths of life and all around the world, creating an international network, which is both healing and creative. In both cases they are groups producing works of very powerful physiology and intensity, which seek the human truth in troubled times.

Opis:
Traditional market selection analysis relies purely on macroeconomic and political factors and fails to account for cultural aspects. Also, international market selection systematic models lack to incorporate hybrid techniques to systematically reduce the uncertainty by comparing results and examining the similarities and differences of the various approaches. The paper aims to present a multi-criteria decision-making model combined with a qualitative technique to make strategic decisions while selecting an international market. Using a hybrid approach, it was examined 18 coffee-producing SMEs to contrast the current multi-criteria model with the firms’ qualitative approach. Thus, the study offers novelty by incorporating a cultural dimension in a multi-criteria model and combining this quantitative approach with a qualitative approach to validate a hybrid approach and thus gain more reliable decision-making while selecting markets abroad. The contribution of the study is twofold. First, the study offers insights into international business by analyzing the relationship between international market selection and small and medium-sized enterprises from novel contexts. Second, the study proposes a multi-criteria decision-making model combined with a qualitative technique to make accurate and strategic decisions while selecting foreign markets.
Tradycyjna analiza wyboru rynku opiera się głównie na czynnikach makroekonomicznych i politycznych i nie uwzględnia aspektów kulturowych. Ponadto, systematyczne modele wyboru rynków międzynarodowych nie uwzględniają technik hybrydowych, aby konsekwentnie zmniejszać niepewność poprzez porównywanie wyników oraz badanie podobieństw i różnic między różnymi metodami. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wielokryterialnego modelu decyzyjnego w połączeniu z metodą jakościową do podejmowania strategicznych decyzji przy wyborze rynku międzynarodowego. Wykorzystując podejście hybrydowe, zbadano 18 MŚP produkujących kawę, aby porównać obecny model wielokryterialny z metodą jakościową stosowaną przez firmy. W związku z tym badanie oferuje nowatorstwo poprzez włączenie wymiaru kulturowego do modelu wielokryterialnego i połączenie tej metody ilościowej z metodą jakościową w celu zweryfikowania techniki hybrydowej, a tym samym uzyskania bardziej wiarygodnego procesu decyzyjnego przy wyborze rynków zagranicznych. Opracowanie ma dwojaki charakter. Po pierwsze, oferuje ono wgląd w międzynarodowy biznes poprzez analizę relacji między wyborem rynku międzynarodowego a małymi i średnimi przedsiębiorstwami z nowych kontekstów. Po drugie, proponuje się wielokryterialny model podejmowania decyzji w połączeniu z techniką jakościową w celu podejmowania trafnych i strategicznych decyzji przy wyborze rynków zagranicznych.

Opis:
Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States and the most taught additional language (L2) in elementary-level schools. However, the amount and type of access differs according to the resources available. Rural settings, which comprise a third of all schools in the US, often have fewer resources and support for the development and maintenance of exposure-track L2 programs, which meet once per week with the goal of, as the name suggests, providing exposure to the L2, rather than a focus on cumulative language development. Given that there are immediate and long-term benefits of even low levels of early bilingualism, ensuring access to quality L2 education is a matter of equity. This paper centers on the first year of a longitudinal collaboration between an exposure-track Spanish language teacher in a rural elementary school, and the research team who created a task-based program tailored for the school following a needs analysis. We analyze the first year of the grant-funded program based on task effectiveness, student enjoyment, and teacher perspectives. We contextualize results within the rural community and offer initial longitudinal data on US exposure-track Spanish. We detail how we adjusted the program for the second year, are freely sharing the materials on the Task Bank (tblt.indiana.edu) and have transferred the program to the teacher’s autonomy. Finally, we highlight that the success of this program was and is due to the collaborative nature of the partnership between the teacher, the researchers, and the administrators.

Artykuł stanowi analizę trzech konceptów kulturowych, które „kalają” biografię Fryderyka Chopina, geniusza (polskiego) romantyzmu w ujęciu performatywnym. Po pierwsze, namysłowi poddana jest idea gender i rozmyta tożsamość płciowa Chopina w dziewiętnastowiecznej historiografii. Po drugie, fenomen queerowości Chopina, jego dandyzm i związek z cross-dresserką George Sand. Trzeci aspekt biografii artysty, który jest tu omawiany, to kwestia narodowości: przywiązanie Chopina do polskości, a zarazem kosmopolityczny modus życia. Tradycyjne ujęcia biografii Chopina, jak również organiczenia „(arcy)polskiego dyskursu romantycznego” czy też etnocentrycznej tradycji polskiego romantyzmu prowadzą do jednowymiarowej reprezentacji tej postaci. Spojrzenie na życie i twórczość kompozytora przez soczewkę kultury popularnej, a także z użyciem instrumentarium postmodernistycznego samo w sobie stanowi punkt sporu romantycznego, a także sporu o romantyzm. Zatem próba naświetlenia niektórych faktów i epizodów biografii Chopina z innej strony, a także próba obalenia tradycyjnego wizerunku Fryderyka Chopina wydają się ważne i ciekawe, gdyż pozwalają na inny ogląd romantyzmu i jego kontrkultur, a w dalszej perspektywie stawiają pytania o miejsce tradycji romantycznej w nowoczesności.
The paper explores three phenomenona which „taint” the biography of Fryderyk Chopin, the ultimate (Polish) Romantic Genius. Firstly, the notion of gender and the portrayal of Chopin in feminine terms in nineteenth century historiography. Secondly, the phenomenon of the queer, tracing his dandyism and his relationship with the cross-dresser artist George Sand. Thirdly, his dual nationality (despite his deep and genuine nostalgia for Poland) and cosmopolitan approach to life and art. Over-romanticized sources, which are still the mainstream for presenting the life and work of the composer always stress the patriotic card and tend to be rather conservative. The creation of new cultural phenomena by way of Chopin’s performative presence is usually treated with distance and scepticism by scholars from the „classical” school. Thus the pop-cultural presentation of Chopin’s biography with postmodern notions applied to some aspects of his life or the mythical reality it created, may be viewed as a point of contention.Therefore the examination of Chopin’s biography from an altered perspective allows us to discuss Romanticism and its countercultures as well as to place this dispute in the landscape of Romanticism vs. Modernity.
