Opis:: Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles (2011) is an imaginative rewriting of Homer’s Iliad. The writer uses the strategy of transfocalization and enters the text from the point of view of Patroclus. His fresh look offers a new critical perspective both on the moral world of the epic and on Achilles, the great Greek hero whose complex personality and tragic hubris Patroclus observes with emotional understanding. Miller transforms the Homeric sparing narrative of the friendship between Patroclus and Achilles into a touch- ing love story built on their mutual devotion, and locates this narrative at the heart of a world of ruthless violence. This paper will consider the writer’s use of hypertextual adap- tation in the novel from the perspective of the change in the narrative focus of the source, and discuss her objectives and methodology.

Opis:: Celem niniejszego artykułu jest omówienie mechanizmów odpowiedzialnych za kształtowanie się bestsellera, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem platformy TikTok. Analiza zostaje przeprowadzona na przykładzie Pieśni o Achillesie Madeline Miller z 2011 roku. Artykuł ukazuje także zmiany zachodzące w opisie i promocji książek, które umniejszają rolę samej fabuły, a skupiają się na motywach oraz stawiają nacisk na indywidualne procesy doświadczania dzieł literackich. Autorka dochodzi do wniosku, że rynek wydawniczy stoi na progu zmiany kulturowej – to młode pokolenie oraz platformy przez nich użytkowane stanowią siłę napędową publikacji i promocji nowych książek z kręgu literatury młodzieżowej.
The purpose of this article is to discuss the mechanisms responsible for the formation of a bestseller, with particular reference to the TikTok platform. The analysis takes Madeline Miller’s Song of Achilles from 2011 as its main object. The article also reveals the changes taking place in the fields of book description and promotion, which increasingly downplay the role of the plot itself and focus on motives, and instead place emphasis on the individual processes of experiencing literary works. The author concludes that the publishing market is on the threshold of a cultural change – it is the young generation and the platforms they use that are driving the publication and promotion of new books in the field of youth literature.

Przepisanie jako forma poszerzenia perspektyw: prawdziwi bohaterowie wychodzą z cienia w powieściach ,,Pieśń o Achillesie" Madeline Miller oraz ,,Penelopiada" Margaret Atwood

Opis:: The aim of this thesis is to demonstrate the reason why retellings are written and their value as literary works nowadays, as well as the issues depicted in selected retellings. The main retellings discussed in the thesis are The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller and The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood and on the basis of the works, the issue of living in someone’s shadow is also explored. The thesis argues that retellings are written to broaden readers’ perspectives regarding previously well-known stories and by comparing the two characters from the works discussed, Patroclus and Penelope, it demonstrates the historical reasons of the characters being marginal and the reason why the authors decided to present them in their works to contemporary readers. Both retellings also prove that both of the characters played a significant role in the lives of their well-known lovers and that because of society’s modern understanding of heroinism, they deserve the title of heroes as well.
Celem niniejszej pracy jest ukazanie celu, dla którego powstają przepisania i ich wartości jako dzieł literackich, oraz problematyki poruszanej w wybranych utworach przepisanych. Głównymi utworami przepisanymi omawianymi w pracy są „Pieśń o Achillesie” autorstwa Madeline Miller oraz „Penelopiada” napisana przez Margaret Atwood, a na ich podstawie poruszana jest również kwestia życia w czyimś cieniu.Praca dowodzi, że przepisania pisane są w celu poszerzenia perspektywy czytelników w stosunku do znanych przez nich wcześniej historii, a poprzez porównanie dwóch postaci z omawianych dzieł, Patroklesa i Penelopy, pokazuje historyczne przyczyny ich marginalizacji oraz powód, dla którego autorki zdecydowały się na nowo przedstawić ich postaci współczesnemu czytelnikowi. Obydwie powieści dowodzą również, że zarówno Patrokles jak i Penelopa odegrali znaczącą rolę w życiu ich znanych partnerów i ze względu na współczesne rozumienie heroizmu, również zasługują na miano bohaterów.
