Maria Piątkowska’s chapter Zombie-Nazis in Horrors, or How the Zombie SS Became Part of Popular Culture notes that undead Nazi soldiers appeared in the cinema as early as the 1940s: the black comedy King of the Zombies (1941) directed by Jean Yarbrough was even nominated for an Academy Award for best music. The decades of the 1970s and 1980s abounded in various, often trashy, depictions of zombie-Nazis who aimed to restore the greatness of the Third Reich, e.g. Shock Waves (1977) or Oasis of the Zombies (1981). Contemporary producers and directors have continued using the image of the zombie SS soldier in their cinematic productions. The 21st Century has witnessed the appearance of such films as: Dead Snow (2009), Horrors at War (2006), and Outpost (2008). Why is this theme constantly used in popular culture? The Third Reich is aptly associated with the idea of pure evil, and the popular culture craves evil. The iconography of the Nazis (e.g., their interest in occultism and references to German mythology) fits the popular image of evil forces in film and literature. By combining this theme with the cruel zombie, one may obtain an almost immortal villain.

Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy są stowarzyszenia teatralne w Krakowie. Chcę udowodnić, że zajmują one ważne miejsce na kulturalnej mapie Krakowa oraz przedstawić ich najważniejsze problemy na przykładzie. Praca składa się z trzech rozdziałów. Pierwszy dotyczy ogólnego zarysu sytuacji w kraju na interesujących mnie płaszczyznach: polityki kulturalnej, trzeciego sektora i najważniejszych kwestii z nim związanych oraz prawnych uwarunkowań jego działalności, partnerstwa publiczno-prywatnego, współpracy organizacji pozarządowych z jednostkami samorządu terytorialnego oraz stanu teatru w Polsce i w trzecim sektorze. Przytoczę też najważniejsze dane dotyczące funkcjonowania stowarzyszeń.Drugi rozdział poświęcony jest uwarunkowaniom lokalnym, dotyczącym w tym przypadku Krakowa. Przyjrzę się tu polityce kulturalnej miasta, krakowskiej kulturze tworzonej przez instytucje publiczne i prywatne, miejscowemu teatrowi, głównym „markom” wydarzeń kulturalnych, wreszcie: funkcjonowaniu w mieście trzeciego sektora i jego finansowania.Trzecia część pracy jest z jednej strony przewodnikiem po krakowskich stowarzyszeniach teatralnych oraz takich stowarzyszeniach, dla których teatr stanowi jedno z pól działalności. Opisuje ona ponadto historię Stowarzyszenia Teatr Mumerus, jego strukturę, zasady funkcjonowania i bieżące problemy – w kontekście działalności zarówno w trzecim sektorze w ogóle, jak i w lokalnych realiach.W podsumowaniu zestawię najważniejsze obserwacje i wnioski, jakie z nich płyną. Spróbuję też ocenić, jakie szanse i zagrożenia stoją przed organizacjami teatralnymi trzeciego sektora w Krakowie.
The subject of this dissertation are theatral associations In Cracow. I would like to prove that they take an important place on Cracow’s cultural map. I would also like to present the biggest issues that they have to deal with on an example. This piece contains elaboration of cultural policy in Poland, the condition of polish theatre, functioning of non governmental organizations, Cracow’s cultural landscape, the financing for culture in the city and the condition of non governmental organizations. I will present 11 theatral associations which operate in Cracow and one of them I will put into deeper analysis. In this work I will be using sources and studys considering cultural policy in Cracow, non govern-mental organizations, theatre and legal documents and laws.

Characteristics of the gut microbiome in esports players compared with those in physical education students and professional athletes

Introduction: Esports is a category of competitive video games that, in many aspects, may be similar to traditional sports; however, the gut microbiota composition of players has not been yet studied. Materials and methods: Here, we investigated the composition and function of the gut microbiota, as well as short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and amino acids, in a group of 109 well-characterized Polish male esports players. The results were compared with two reference groups: 25 endurance athletes and 36 healthy students of physical education. DNA and metabolites isolated from fecal samples were analyzed using shotgun metagenomic sequencing and mass spectrometry, respectively. Physical activity and nutritional measures were evaluated by questionnaire. Results: Although anthropometric, physical activity and nutritional measures differentiated esports players from students, there were no differences in bacterial diversity, the Bacteroidetes/Firmicutes ratio, the composition of enterotype clusters, metagenome functional content, or SCFA concentrations. However, there were significant differences between esports players and students with respect to nine bacterial species and nine amino acids. By contrast, all of the above-mentioned measures differentiated professional athletes from esports players and students, with 45 bacteria differentiating professional athletes from the former and 31 from the latter. The only species differentiating all three experimental groups was Parabacteroides distasonis, showing the lowest and highest abundance in esports players and athletes, respectively. Conclusion: Our study confirms the marked impact of intense exercise training on gut microbial structure and function. Differences in lifestyle and dietary habits between esports players and physical education students appear to not have a major effect on the gut microbiota.
