Wybrane aspekty funkcjonowania emocjonalnego graczy Texas Holdem Poker

Opis:: The subject of the research described in this paper is the relationship between various features of emotional functioning of professional poker Texas Hold’em players. The statement about gambling addiction of poker players was also examined. The research encompasses 56 players, which participated in it anonymously and voluntarily. Ten specific aspects of cognitive and emotional functioning was measured by online questionnaire. Both the standardized scale and the scale created specifically for purposes of the research were used. The statistical significance index and r-Pearson correlation factor were used to measure strength and direction between variables and their statistical significance. The results confirmed previous hypothesis about coexistence between various features of poker players emotional functioning. The results also show a lack of gambling addiction, and give strong evidence for supposition that poker players have variety of socially positive features and skills, contrary to common prejudices about them.
W niniejszej pracy zajęto się związkami jakie zachodzą pomiędzy cechami świadczącymi o specyfice funkcjonowania emocjonalnego graczy Texas Holdem Poker, a także weryfikacją twierdzenia o uzależnieniu od hazardu osób grających w pokera. Badaniem objęto grupę 56 graczy, którzy dobrowolnie i anonimowo wzięli w nim udział. Za pomocą kwestionariusza online zmierzono poziom dziesięciu zmiennych obejmujących elementy związane z funkcjonowaniem emocjonalno-poznawczym. W badaniu posłużono się wystandaryzowanymi narzędziami oraz narzędziami stworzonymi na potrzeby niniejszej pracy. Za pomocą współczynnika korelacji r-Pearsona oraz wskaźnika istotności statystycznej, określono siłę i kierunek związku między zmiennymi i ich istotność statystyczną. Otrzymane wyniki potwierdziły zakładane hipotezy o współwystępowaniu cech świadczących o specyfice funkcjonowania emocjonalnego graczy. Wnioski płynące z badania wskazują na brak uzależnienia od hazardu u graczy, a ponadto można przypuszczać, iż badana grupa, wbrew panującym stereotypom prezentuje szereg korzystnych z punktu widzenia społeczeństwa cech i kompetencji.

Opis:: The authors of the paper undertook an analysis of the regulations on the organization of a poker game under the Gambling Act. The main subject of the analysis revolves around the question to what extent state authorities should monitor and restrict the activity of poker players. The scope of the statutory restrictions on arranging and participating in poker games depends on the culture of perception of gambling in a given country. Assigning poker to the appropriate regulatory category, either as a gambling activity carrying the highest social risks in terms of public health or safety, or as a game primarily for entertainment, is by no means obvious and depends on determining such factors as the purpose of organizing the poker game and the manner in which it is played, i.e. whether players are playing against a casino or against each other. The regulatory differentiation depending on the variety of poker games is the result of years of efforts by national legislators and the jurisprudence to deﬁne and categorize the game correctly. The article cites the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court justifying the formal and material prerequisites of the existing restrictions on the gambling services market. The authors also relied on the extensive body of case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union explicating the permissibility of restrictions on freedom of establishment and freedom to provide services in the sphere of gambling. The conclusions drawn from these reﬂections conﬁrm that the current provisions of the Polish Gambling Act are part of a consistent and systematic state policy aimed at ensuring the highest possible level of consumer protection, and the introduced restrictions are proportionate and necessary.

Opis:: Gra w pokera jest dość popularną rozrywką, bywa również nietypową formą pracy. Może jednak prowadzić do uzależnienia, mającego negatywne skutki dla jednostki i społeczeństwa, ponadto nie jest akceptowana w społeczeństwie. Dlatego rodziny graczy mogą mieć obawy dotyczące skutków podejmowania gry. Potwierdzają to wyniki badań jakościowych opisane w niniejszym artykule. Przeprowadzono 30 wywiadów pogłębionych z udziałem rekreacyjnych i zawodowych graczy pokerowych w wieku 19-30 lat, których celem było m.in. poznanie sytuacji rodzinnej pokerzystów. Artykuł prezentuje wyniki dotyczące postaw rodzin wobec gry, które w większości były pełne lęku i wątpliwości. Opisane zostały uwarunkowania ich negatywnego nastawienia, u podstaw którego leżą często mechanizmy życia społecznego oraz lęk przed uzależnieniem od gry, a także ich konsekwencje dotyczące dalszych planów graczy. Mowa jest również o relacjach rodzinnych pełniących ważną rolę w kwestii akceptacji gry w pokera.
Playing poker is quite a popular pastime, but it can be also an unusual form of work. Nevertheless, it can become an addiction having negative consequences for an individual person and the society, moreover, it is not accepted in this society. Therefore, playersʼ families may be concerned about the outcomes of taking up this game. It is confirmed by the results of the qualitative studies described in this article1. There were conducted 30 in-depth interviews with recreational and professional poker players aged 19-30, the purpose of which was, for example, to provide information on the family situation of poker players. The article presents the results related to the families’ attitudes towards the game, which were mostly full of fears and doubts. There were described reasons of their negative attitudes usually conditioned by the mechanisms of the social life and the fear of becoming addicted to the game, as well as their consequences related to further plans of the players. The article also mentions family relationships playing an important role in the acceptance of the game of poker.

Przeprowadzono analizę w oparciu o jedną z metod eksploracji danych – drzewa klasyfikacyjne. Wybór tej techniki podyktowany był wykorzystaniem danych jakościowych jako zmiennych objaśniających rozgrywkę pokerową oraz prostotą prezentacji otrzymanych wyników, nawet przy bardzo rozbudowanych drzewach. W badaniu odkryto kilka czynników, które w istotny sposób mają wpływ na przebieg gry.
The paper aims to characterize key factors determining poker game outcome. The analysis was based on classification trees and this was due to the qualitative data used as the explanatory variables. The method enables clear presentation of the results even in case of very complex tree structures. The study describes also a few other factors that significantly influence the game outcome.
