Opis:
The last 2000 years have seen a change in the prices of silver, grain, land as well as a change in living costs, the salary of hired labourers and police informers. The relationships between those figures have also changed and the monetary systems are quite different nowadays. Thus, it is difficult to answer an apparently simple question: how much is Judas’s 30 pieces of silver? An equivalent of 30 pieces of silver could be 95 zlotys, but also 46 500 zlotys (i.e. about $28 and $13 700 respectively). However, it is obvious that this amount of money is dramatically little in comparison with the scale of betrayal of God and no sum of money would be adequate. But again: even if Judas had lacked faith in Jesus, the sum of money was excessively small for betraying a good and innocent man by one who was chosen by that man from the others and in whom his companions placed so much confidence. Even if Judas had realized that, it was unfortunately too late (Mt. 27: 1–5).

Opis:
The sol-gel derived silica spheres with surfaces modified by silver nanoparticles were used to enhance the emission efficiency of PDTphotosensitizer Photolon. Two various materials with different Ag concentrations were prepared by exploiting the Tollen's method. The silica nanoparticles were prepared by modified Stöber synthesis. The diameter of obtained silica spheres was ca. 100nm. These silica spheres we used as a carrier for noble nanoparticles, since they can be easily doped by various substances that can change their physical and chemical properties. The colloidal water solutions of Ag-doped SiO2 particles have been prepared. It was demonstrated that the fluorescence intensity of Photolon is influenced by silver nanoparticles concentration, however it is not proportional to the silver concentration. The fluorescence intensity of Photolon with silver doped silica nanoparticles is much higher then fluorescence intensity of Photolon in water solution. This result is very promising and may be used to enhance the photodynamic effect.

Opis:
The population of the developed world is continuously ageing. The phenomenon is predicted to represent a major challenge for the European continent, but at the same time, it also means a huge business opportunity for the economy. Experts of the European Union are already working on targeted programmes that collect and analyse the results of respective researches in order to develop alternative solutions for the 50+ age group. This new “niche” market segment had already been named “silver economy”. As the group of senior citizens affect almost all segments of the economy, marketing experts have to plan ahead to be prepared for the upcoming new consumers’ demands and preferences. Elderly people generally like to participate in tourism, thus the industry needs to keep up with their changing demands. In Hungary, there has been a significant increase in domestic rural tourism, mainly thanks to new tourism attractions and cost-effective leisure services developed with the support of EU funds. However, the sustainability of rural lifestyle requires a stabile economic background and high quality management. As of today, rural tourism is on the rise in Hungary, and will hopefully remain a success story, based on the economic benefits of the new trends of senior tourism.

Opis:
Background. A water filtered by jug filter system (JFS) can be applied for the preparation of food products, as well as it can be directly consumed as drinking water. In the European Union, in both above-mentioned cases the quality of water filtered using JFSs has to fulfill the requirements listed in Directive 98/83/EC. However, Directive 98/83/EC sets no parametric value for silver, JFSs are not regulated under this legislative act and additionally, silver-modified activated carbon (applied in such systems) has not been approved by European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Therefore, the exposure to this metal should be assessed for all JFSs containing filtration cartridges with silver-modified activated carbon, present on the retail market. Objective. A comprehensive study was conducted in order to examine the effect of JFSs (consisted of filtration oval-cartridges of the new type with silver-modified activated carbon) on the quality of filtered water regarding the released amounts of silver. Silver migration from such type of cartridges has not been examined before. The aim of work was the assessment of exposure to silver released into filtered water from silver-modified activated carbon applied in such types of JFSs. Material and methods. Silver migration from six brands of JFSs (A–F) was investigated according to British Standard BS 8427:2004 using a validated inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry method. Results. The average daily silver concentrations in the composite samples collected on six measurement days for A, B, C, D, E and F JFSs were in the ranges of: 3.95–18.1 μg/l, 4.6–21.7 μg/l, 0.41–8.7 μg/l, 6.9–10.9 μg/l, 3.3–17.1 μg/l and 10.1–20.8 μg/l, respectively. The established grand mean concentrations of released silver from all six oval cartridges were in the range of 2.7–14.3 μg/l. The estimated Hazard Quotient (HQ) indices were in the range of 0.015–0.082 Conclusions. The estimated HQ indices were significantly lower than 1 and therefore no long-term risk for human health could be expected. All the investigated JFSs of the new type meet previously established provisional migration limit for silver from such systems – 25 μg/l.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Badania migracji srebra z sześciu rodzajów systemów JFS (A–F) przeprowadzono zgodnie z Normą Brytyjską BS 8427:2004, stosując zwalidowaną metodę opartą na spektrometrii mas z jonizacją w plazmie indukcyjnie sprzężonej.

Opis:
The objective of the present study was to obtain silver core nanoparticles coated with dextran shell. In the described method dextran plays role of reductive and protective agent and also functionalisation ligand. Our research was aimed at nanoparticles synthesis at 37°C. It is the human body temperature, which is safe for temperature-sensitive drugs (proteins). In the presented work the time of reaction, dextran molecular weight and its chemical functionalisation was investigated. Particles were characterized by Nanosight and SEM, their UV–Vis spectroscopic absorption properties were also determined. Nanoparticles with diameter less than 95 nm with relatively narrow size distribution were obtained. Our work demonstrated that it was possible to obtain nanoparticles in 37°C without using any harmful reagents.

Opis:
Silver is known for its biocidal properties. This metal has been used for decorations and food preservation since ancient times and has also been used in medicine. Silver foil has been used to cover wounds and burns. In addition, silver solutions were created to help fight the microorganisms responsible for causing infections, which helped the wound healing process. Currently, to increase and optimize the properties of silver, it is used on a nanometric scale. Nanosilver, due to its expanded spectrum of properties, is used in many economic sectors, including in the production of disinfectants and food films, as well as in animal farms. Nanoparticles are also the basis of nanomedicine action. Creating new drug complexes with nanosilver and modifying the medical materials used in implantology or dentistry allow the lives of many people to be saved every day. In addition, nanosilver particles are commonly used as a specific disinfectant in the production of hospital materials: dressings, bandages, surgical masks, hospital clothing and shoes, and equipment. With the growing use of nanosilver, there are concerns about its harmful effects on living organisms, because not all its mechanisms of action are known. As is well known, the dose determines the toxicity of a given substance; the case is similar for nanosilver. However, is the dose providing antibacterial and antifungal properties non-toxic to animals and humans? This review presents a summary of the scientific research showing the scope of nanosilver activity and the resulting threats.
