Opis:
The neck posture of sauropod dinosaurs has long been controversial. Recent reconstructions position the cervical vertebrae and skull in an “osteological neutral pose” (ONP), the best fit arrived at by articulating the vertebrae with the zygapophyses in maximum contact. This approach in isolation suggests that most or all sauropods held their necks horizontally. However, a substantial literature on extant amniotes (mammals, turtles, squamates, crocodilians and birds) shows that living animals do not habitually maintain their necks in ONP. Instead, the neck is maximally extended and the head is maximally flexed, so that the mid−cervical region is near vertical. Unless sauropods behaved differently from all extant amniote groups, they must have habitually held their necks extended and their heads flexed. The life orientation of the heads of sauropods has been inferred from the inclination of the semi−circular canals. However, extant animals show wide variation in inclination of the “horizontal” semi−circular canal: the orientation of this structure is not tightly constrained and can give only a general idea of the life posture of extinct animals’ heads.

Schottky diodes resulting from an intimate contact of aluminum on electrodeposited poly(3-methylthiopene) were studied by admittance spectroscopy, capacitance-voltage measurements and voltaic and optically-induced current and capacitance transients. The loss tangents show the existence of interface states that can be removed by vacuum annealing. Furthermore, the C-V curves contradict the idea of movement of the dopant ions.

Opis:
Hydration kinetics, sorption isotherm, and proton free induction decays are measured for Ramalina terebrata thalli rehydrated from gaseous phase. Very tightly, tightly, and loosely bound water fractions are distinguished. Sorption isotherm is sigmoidal in form with the mass of water saturating primary water binding sites equal to Δ m/$m_0$ = 0.046. Proton free induction decays show the presence of immobilized water fraction ($T_{2 L_1}$* ≈ 100 μs) and mobile water pool ($T_{2 L_2}$* ≈ 330 μs). Sorption isotherm fitted to the NMR data shows the absence of water fraction "sealed" in pores of dry thallus.

Opis:
Clusters of gastropod egg capsules, inferred to be of neritoids and attached to the inner shell wall of the ultimate whorl of a large volutid gastropod, are here recorded from the upper Nekum Member (Maastricht Formation; late Maastrichtian) of the ENCI−Heidelberg Cement Group quarry, St Pietersberg (Maastricht, southeast Netherlands). Because the aragonitic shell of the volutid has dissolved, the outlines of the egg capsules are now revealed on the steinkern of indurated biocalcarenite, having been subsequently overgrown by cheilostome bryozoan colonies and preserved as mould bioimmurations. This represents the first example of gastropod eggs preserved through bioimmuration, as well as the first record of gastropod eggs from the Cretaceous.

Opis:
In this article, the authors present a design methodology for generating a spatially tailored fragment beam with specified velocity and projection angles. The modified Gurney equation was used to estimate the length and diameter of the cylindrical charge to achieve the desired velocity; and the modified Taylor equation was used to arrive at the radius of curvature of the fragmenting disc. The methodology is further explained for generating a rectangular beam of fragments having a velocity of 1500 m/s with a tailored fragment beam of 32° in the azimuth and 20° in the elevation. The warhead had preformed steel fragments of 4 mm diameter arranged in a double layer. The design was validated using the fragment distribution measured experimentally.

Opis:
A formulation is presented for optimal design in the setting of linear elastostatics for continuum structures, where the modulus tensor field is expressed as a decomposition into a set of independent tensors. For the linear case at hand, net material properties simply equal the sum of the constituent tensor fields. The design variables are comprised of one or more of the these fields, while the remaining ones in the "mix" are taken to be specified and fixed. The optimal continuum structure is designated to be such combination of designed and specified constituent fields that minimizes structural compliance. A set of unit energies is introduced to serve as a basis for the general expression of both unit cost in the isoperimetric (cost) constraint, and unit strain energy. The design problem is characterized in the form of a max-min problem, where the max applies to design and the (inner) min is w.r.t. the state variables. Partitioning of energies among constituents in the optimal mixture is identified directly from the govering equations.

Opis:
Understanding the dispersion characteristics of fragments is essential for precise planning of the end game and the neutralization of targets using directional fragment generator warheads (FGW). The authors have carried out experiments to study the spatial dispersion of the fragments in two configurations of FGWs having a circular shaped fragment generating surface. In this paper, the dispersion of the fragments is quantified using the mean and standard deviation of the projection angle. Using the Shapiro-Wilk test, it is verified that dispersion in the projection angle follows a normal distribution. The dispersion of the peripheral fragments is higher due to edge effects. A steeper variation in projection angles is observed for fragments placed at a radial distance greater than 0.7 times the explosive charge radius. These observations are in agreement with the results of Held (1988) for a square shaped fragment generating surface.

Opis:
In this study we examine the effect of the magnetic field parameter on the growth rate of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) in a couple stress fluids. A simple theory based on fully developed flow approximations is used to derive the dispersion relation for the growth rate of the RTI. The general dispersion relation obtained using perturbation equations with appropriate boundary conditions will be reduced for the special cases of propagation and the condition of instability and stability will be obtained. In solving the problem of the R-T instability the appropriate boundary conditions will be applied. The couple-stress parameter is found to be stabilizing and the influence of the various parameters involved in the problem on the interface stability is thoroughly analyzed. The new results will be obtained by plotting the curves between the dimensionless growth rate and the dimensionless wave number for various physical parameters involved in the problem (viz. the magnetic field, couple-stress, porosity, etc.) in the problem. It is found that the magnetic field and couple-stress have a stabilization effect whereas the buoyancy force (surface tension) has a destabilization effect on the RT instability in the presence of porous media.
