W tym rozdziale przedstawiono studium przypadku Stowarzyszenia ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe). Omówiono, w jaki sposób stowarzyszenie, jako społeczność profesjonalistów zajmujących się testami językowymi, angażuje się w promowanie świadomości zagadnień związanych z ocenianiem sprawności językowej wśród różnych interesariuszy, a w szczególności stara się służyć specjalistom działającym w językach innych niż angielski. Zaangażowanie ALTE obejmuje: System Zarządzania Jakością (ALTE Quality Management System), kursy, konferencje i otwarte publikacje, działania polityczne na szczeblu krajowym i ponadnarodowym, w szczególności w odniesieniu do kwestii związanych z migracją i integracją.
Questo capitolo presenta un caso di studio dell’ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe). Il contributo intende illustrare come l’Associazione, in quanto comunità di professionisti del testing linguistico e attraverso un ampio ventaglio di strumenti, sia impegnata a promuovere consapevolezza in merito alle questioni legate alla valutazione linguistica, coinvolgendo i diversi attori in gioco e supportando in particolare coloro i quali operano in lingue diverse dall’inglese. I metodi presentati includono: sistema di gestione di qualità ALTE e documentazione accessoria, corsi, eventi e risorse ALTE, sostegno a livello nazionale e sovranazionale in relazione alle politiche linguistiche in materia di migrazione e integrazione.
This article presents briefly the activities of ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe) as a case study in promoting language assessment literacy in Europe and beyond. This chapter provides a case study of the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE). It explores how the association, as a community of language testing professionals, engages in promoting awareness of language assessment issues to a variety of stakeholders using different methods, and, in particular, strives to serve language professionals operating in languages other than English. The methods focused on include: the ALTE Quality Management System and accompanying documentation, the courses and events it holds and the resources it creates, policy advocacy at national and supranational levels, specifically with regard to issues surrounding migration and integration.

Opis:: In recent years, scientific and technological advances have changed the modern battlefield, giving rise to new weapons systems and battle strategies. Apart from the challenges posed by new means and methods of warfare, soldiers are faced with an increasing need to rely on their language skills while joining multinational operations. To succeed in an international military environment, bridging the language gap is a must since it contributes to building and strengthening interoperability with NATO forces. The following article is intended to discuss the role of STANAG tests in developing language competence of Polish soldiers as reflected in the language training framework programme for the Polish military, with a focus on the speaking ability. Most importantly, the article highlights the contribution of language testing according to STANAG 6001 to developing interoperability with the Allies, presenting the main phases of the process. In the final part, the authoress attempts to determine to what extent this contribution is really made.
Ostatnie lata przyniosły ogromny postęp naukowy i technologiczny widoczny na współczesnym polu walki, pozwalający na wprowadzenie nowych systemów uzbrojenia i strategii prowadzenia działań zbrojnych. Oprócz wyzwań, jakie niosą ze sobą nowe środki i metody prowadzenia wojny, żołnierze stają przed coraz większą potrzebą wykorzystywania swoich umiejętności językowych, uczestnicząc w międzynarodowych operacjach wojskowych. Ujednolicenie kompetencji językowych jest warunkiem nie zbędnym dla prawidłowego funkcjonowania w międzynarodowym środowisku wojskowym, przyczyniając się do wzmacniania partnerskiego współdziałania z siłami NATO. Poniższy artykuł miał na celu omówienie roli egzaminów STANAG w rozwijaniu kompetencji językowych żołnierzy RP, co znajduje odzwierciedlenie w ramowym programie szkolenia językowego dla Polskich Sił Zbrojnych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem doskonalenia sprawności mówienia. Artykuł podkreślił wkład systemu testowania językowego według STANAG 6001 w rozwój interoperacyjności z wojskami sojuszniczymi, przedstawiającgłówne fazy tego procesu. W końcowej części autorka podjęła próbę ustalenia, w jakim stopniu ten proces jest faktycznie osiągalny.

Opis:: Over the last years, thousands of asylum seekers and refugees have arrived in Italy, including a large number of teenagers without any adult caregivers and women. A significant partof them is placed in the Italian language courses for foreigners organised by the Provincial Centre for Adult Education, commonly called CPIA (Centro Provinciale per l’Istruzione degli Adulti). Thispaper addresses the exploration of the language testing and assessment of the courses organized by this institution. With the aim of evaluating these aspects, the paper concentrates on the CPIA,its teachers, and its students. Focusing on CPIA’s language courses, we investigate the language testing and assessment carried out at the beginning and at the end of the language courses. Thanks to these observations, the paper tries to identify some critical aspects and to understand their causes.

Opis:: The current bibliometric study employed citation analysis and keyword analysis to perform a review of language assessment and testing. Based on citation counts and keywords, this study identified the recent trends/changes and the most influential regions, institutions, scholars, and publications in the field. In addition, the intellectual structures of the field reviewed by the network maps of the most influential documents and scholars showed how these eminent documents and authors were related to each other. It was found that the field experienced significant changes with the emergence of new scholars, research themes, and topics. This study is also a tribute to hundreds of scholarly documents in the field, which keep the field moving forward.

Opis:: Assessing learners’ performance is crucial as it informs about learners’ achievement levels in addition to their strengths and weaknesses, not only in face-to-face but also in online teaching. The study aimed at investigating the challenges faced by language teachers in assessing learners during online teaching and to offer some suggestions regarding language assessment courses in teacher training programs. The study adopted a qualitative approach to data collection and analysis. The participants included 22 language teachers whose age was between 24 to 48. Of these teachers, 8 were male, while the rest were female. Their teaching experience varied from 2 to 25 years, with an average of 11.8 years. The data was based on the responses of the participants during semi-structured interviews. The participants were asked to attend ZOOM meetings to be held, considering their availability. The interviews lasted 10 to 25 minutes. The results of the study indicated that the challenges faced by the participants included five major themes: Assessment type, assessment item formats, support, previous training (assessment literacy), and academic integrity. Several suggestions were offered considering online testing and assessment literacy and language assessment courses in teacher training programs.

Opis:: This investigation of thanks to you in British and American usage was precipitated by a situation at an American university, in which a native Arabic speaker said thanks to you in isolation, making his intended meaning unclear. The study analyzes use of thanks to you in the Corpus of Contemporary American English and the British National Corpus to gain insights for English language instruction /assessment in the American context, as well as English-as-a-lingua-franca contexts where the majority of speakers are not native speakers of English or are speakers of different varieties of English but where American or British English are for educational purposes the standard varieties. Analysis of the two corpora revealed three functions for thanks to you common to British and American usage: expressing gratitude, communicating "because of you" positively, and communicating "because of you" negatively (as in sarcasm). A fourth use of thanks to you, thanking journalists/guests for being on news programs/talk shows, occurred in the American corpus only. Analysis indicates that felicitous use of thanks to you for each of these meanings depends on the presence of a range of factors, both linguistic and material, in the context of utterance.

Opis:: The article presents selected psychological and sociological aspects of the process of evaluating educational attainment in language education. Attention is given to stereotypical and ahistorical opinions connected with the role of assessment in grammar-translation and audiolingual methods as well as in the communicative approach. Distortions are also discussed such as introducing testing techniques of a practical value in mass education as solutions responding to authentic communicative needs of the learners or presenting formative evaluation as one of the recent educational innovations. Several myths which unify the academic community and facilitate interaction are examined and distinguished from complex issues and difficulties such as assessing intercultural competence or objectivizing the evaluation of interactive skills. The text suggests that misrepresentation of the past serves to create an image of continuous progress in SLA/FLT as well as to paint a more optimistic picture of the present educational context with assessment as its integral element.

Opis:: A certificate proving the holder’s proficiency in a foreign language for specific purposes (LSP) should guarantee that the person submitting such a document is able to perform specific professional tasks using the particular foreign language. Therefore, an examination measuring such competencies should meet certain requirements and have certain characteristics. What are the differences between testing languages for general and for specific purposes? Are these differences visible in existing certificate examinations? Do the language certificates issued on the basis of LSP examinations give employers a guarantee that the employee can handle professional tasks which demand the use of the foreign language in question? In an attempt to answer these queries, the article will outline the theoretical principles behind testing languages for specific purposes and try to compare the theory and practice through an analysis of several LSP exams available on the market. Reflecting on the observations, it will also try to determine why the reality is often so distant from the theoretical foundations.
