Opis:
A three-dimensional finite element technique was used to analyse single pile lateral response subjected to pure lateral load. The main objective of this study is to assess the influence of the pile slenderness ratio on the lateral behaviour of single pile. The lateral single pile response in this assessment considered both lateral pile displacement and lateral soil resistance. As a result, modified p-y curves for lateral single pile response were improved when taking into account the influence lateral load magnitudes, pile cross sectional shape and flexural rigidity of the pile. The finite element method includes linear elastic, Mohr-Coulomb and 16-nodes interface models to represent the pile behaviour, soil performance and interface element, respectively. It can be concluded that the lateral pile deformation and lateral soil resistance because of the lateral load are always influenced by lateral load intensity and soil type as well as a pile slenderness ratio (L/D). The pile under an intermediate and large amount of loading (in case of cohesionless soil) has more resistance (low lateral displacement) than the pile embedded on the cohesion soil. In addition, it can be observed that the square-shaped pile is able to resist the load by about 30% more than the circular pile. On the other hand, pile in cohesionless soil was less affected by the change in EI compared with that in cohesive soil.

Opis:
Purpose: This paper investigates the possibility of successfully welding a Low Alloy Steel (LAS) stud to Galvanized Steel (GS) plate. Design/methodology/approach: Arc Stud Welding (ASW) was performed on joining LAS studs to GS plates. Welding parameters were selected based on weld trails. The first tests of the welded joints were based on visual inspection for welding defects such as lack of fusion and undercut welding defects. The good quality should be free of these defects and have full weld reinforcement. Other weld qualifications included torque strength test, microhardness test, and microstructure examination. Findings: The LAS studs have been successfully welded to a galvanized steel plate using the arc stud welding process. Higher welding current with adjusted welding time (800 A, 0.3 s) gave full weld reinforcement, the best joint appearance, and strength. Martensite phase was detected in the weld area and heat affected zone (HAZ), affecting the joint mechanical properties. Hardness property varied across the welded joint, and maximum hardness was recorded at the HAZ at the stud side. Hardness increased with the increasing welding current. At 800 A, welding current hardness was 10% higher than at 400 and 600 A. Torque strength was affected by weld reinforcement, and 800 A gave the best weld reinforcement that produced the highest torque strength. Research limitations/implications: The main research limitation is the difficulty of welding LAS studs and GS plates. In conventional welding methods, such as gas metal arc welding, it is hard to get full weld penetration due to the geometry restrictions of the joint, which results in partial weld penetration between the studs and the plates. Furthermore, the issue of zinc evaporation during welding can be reduced by the advantage of the very high welding speed (in milliseconds) of ASW that overcomes the problem of continuous welding that usually results in the formation of harmful porosities and poor weldability. Originality/value: In this research, galvanized steel plates were successfully welded to LAS studs using the ASW process. The welding parameters for this dissimilar welding joint were carefully selected. Microstructure changing due to the welding process was investigated. The joint mechanical properties were evaluated.

Opis:
The present work proposes several pre-injection patterns to reduce nitrogen oxides in the Wartsila 6L 46 marine engine. A numerical model was carried out to characterise the emissions and consumption of the engine. Several pre-injection quantities, durations, and starting instants were analysed. It was found that oxides of nitrogen can be noticeably reduced but at the expense of increasing consumption as well as other emissions such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. According to this, a multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model was established to select the most appropriate parameters. Besides, an artificial neural network (ANN) was developed to complement the results and analyse a huge quantity of alternatives. This hybrid MCDM-ANN methodology proposed in the present work constitutes a useful tool to design new marine engines.

Opis:
Most renewable energy sources are intermittent and seasonal, making energy storage and consumption problematic. Hydrogen gas can save and convey chemical energy, making it a promising sustainable energy source. Electrochemical water electrolysis technology’s sustainable and efficient hydrogen gas production attracts global attention. Higher hydrogen production rates enhance hydrogen volumetric energy capacity by storing intermittent hydrogen gas in high-pressure tanks. Pressurized storage tanks are cost-effective and efficient. Hydrogen gas may be stored economically and efficiently in pressurized tanks, making electrochemical water electrolysis a sustainable energy source. This paper introduced hydrogen as an alternative to natural gas, detailed water electrolysis technologies for hydrogen production, and highlighted how they can manufacture hydrogen efficiently and cost-effectively. The theoretical volume of gaseous hydrogen and oxygen that could be produced by electrolyzing water under typical temperature and pressure (STP) circumstances, assuming a 100% efficiency rate of the process. Since there are always two moles of hydrogen produced by electrolysis and one mole of gas occupies the same volume, the volume of hydrogen developed from water is twice that of oxygen. The volume of liberated oxygen is 0.21 (L/min), and the volume of liberated hydrogen is 0.42 (L/min) with a current density of 30 A, for instance, the tracer’s diffusion coefficient for all conceivable flow rates. A maximum value of 90 liters per hour was determined to be the threshold at which the diffusion coefficient increased with increasing flow rate. It would appear that the diffusion coefficient remains unchanged at flow rates greater than 90 liters per hour.
