Opis:: In this work, approximate analytical solution is developed using differential transformation method for finding the molar concentration of the native and denatured enzyme in terms of second-order rate constant. Also, the obtained solutions are used to study the kinetics of thermal inactivation of enzyme as applied in biotechnology. The analytical solution was validated with numerical solution using fourth- order Runge-Kutta. Good agreement was established between the numerical and approximated analytical solutions.

Opis:: This work is presented as a further study to our previous work, “Thermal performance analysis of a natural convection porous fin with temperature-dependent thermal conductivity and internal heat" published in "Thermal Science and Engineering Progress. 1 (2017) 39–52”, where it was assumed that the surface convection is negligible and heat is transferred only by natural convection in the porous fin. In this present study, such an assumption has been relaxed. Also, effects of surface convective heat transfer on the thermal performance of porous fin with temperature-dependent thermal conductivity and internal heat generation have been investigated using Galerkin’s method of weighted residual. The results of the Galerkin’s method of weighted residual show excellent agreement with the results of numerical method using shooting method coupled with Runge-Kutta method and also with the results of homotopy perturbation method. Thereafter, the developed analytical solutions are used to investigate the influences of the thermal model parameters on the thermal performance of the porous fin. It is found as the with the other model parameters that as the convective parameter increases, the rate of heat transfer from the base of the fin increases and consequently, the porous fin efficiency improves. However, increase in the nonlinear thermal conductivity parameter decreases the temperature distribution in the fin. Based on the high accuracy of the Galerkin’s method of weighted residual as displayed in this work, it is hoped that the simple analytical solutions given by the approximate analytical method will enhance the analysis of extended surfaces and also assist the designers.

Opis:: One of the classical features exhibited in nonlinear dynamics of engineering systems is the jump phenomenon, which is the discontinuous change in the steady state response of a system as a parameter is slowly varied. Such phenomenon is characterized by large amplitude dynamic responses of systems to small amplitude disturbances. It is established that this phenomenon cannot be described by the standard asymptotic and perturbation methods because they are limited to the study of small amplitude responses to small disturbances. Therefore, this paper presents the application of differential transformation method-Padé approximant to the solution of jump and bifurcation phenomena for a geometrical nonlinear cantilever beam subjected to a harmonic excitation. The accuracy and validity of the analytical solutions obtained by the differential transformation method are shown through a comparison of the results of the analytical solution with the corresponding results of the numerical solution obtained by fourth-order Runge-Kutta method and also with the results in a past study using harmonic balancing method. With the aid of the differential transformation method-Padé approximant, the effects of the nonlinear parameters in the model equation on the dynamic response of the beam are investigated. Also, the sensitivity of the beam to the external excitation amplitude is analyzed. In the distributed forced vibration, the jump phenomenon appeared in the response amplitude by variation of the excitation frequency while in the resonance frequency, the beat phenomenon with harmonic motion is seen for low level of excitation amplitude. At a certain frequency, the jump and bifurcation phenomena are seen in the curves of responses versus excitation amplitude. Additionally, the plots of the phase plane and time history of the system response are shown. It is established that the differential transformation method is a very useful mathematical tool for dealing with the nonlinear problems.

Opis:: In this work, the efficiency of differential transformation method to the solutions of large amplitude nonlinear oscillatory systems is further established. Two cases of oscillation systems, nonlinear plane pendulum and pendulum in a rotating plane are considered. Without any linearization, discretization or series expansion of the sine and cosine of the angular displacement in the nonlinear models of the systems, the differential transformation method with Padé approximant is used to provide analytical solutions to the nonlinear problems. Also, the increased predictive power and the high level of accuracy of the differential transformation method over the previous methods are presented. The extreme accuracy and validity of the analytical solutions obtained by the differential transformation method are shown through comparison of the results of the solution with the corresponding numerical solutions obtained by fourth-fifth-order Runge-Kutta method. Also, with the aid of the analytical solutions, parametric studies were carried to study the impacts of the model parameters on the dynamic behavior of the large-amplitude nonlinear oscillation system. The method avoids any numerical complexity and it is very simple, suitable and useful as a mathematical tool for dealing the nonlinear problems.

Opis:: Hydrocarbon exploration analysis from a seismic stratigraphic approach was carried out within the Beta Field, Coastal Swamp Depobelt, Niger Delta, to identify system tracts and sequence boundaries that could be associated with potential hydrocarbon accumulation. 3D seismic volume and data from four wells were analyzed. Depositional sequences, system tracts, sequence boundaries, and candidate maximum flooding surfaces were picked from logs, while reflection patterns and terminations were interpreted from seismic sections. Log shapes from gamma rays in combination with seismic facies analysis were interpreted in order to delineate lithology, depositional environments and depositional sequences. Seismic attributes were extracted and were draped on gridded surfaces from the interpreted seismic horizons. These were integrated with structure maps to obtain structural and stratigraphic trends, and possible presence of reservoir sand. Five depositional sequences and nine seismic facies were identified within the field. The depositional sequences were designated Sequences S1 to S5 based on the depth of the occurrences and stacking patterns. This study reveals a progression from fluvial depositional settings to the shelf. The main reservoirs identified are the sand units of the highstand and lowstand within three depositional sequences (S1, S4 and S5) although interbedded sands within the TST of S4 and S5 are also suspected of being potential reservoirs. The channel sand deposits within the study area are suspected to be hydrocarbon bearing as they occurred within the complex fault trapping system popular in the Niger Delta. The application of seismic stratigraphy, as shown in this study, serves to encourage exploration in the Niger Delta where it could be effectively employed for reducing risk in hydrocarbon exploration.

Opis:: This study evaluated the effects of gas flaring on the physico-chemical and microbiological characteristics of water sources at Egbema, Imo State, Nigeria. Surface and ground water samples from the area were compared with samples from Ihiagwa Autonomous Community in Owerri West, a non-gas flared community. Both water sources were then compared with WHO standards for drinking water. The results revealed that water sources from the gas flared area have high levels of temperature, total chlorine, nitrate, nitrites, sulphates, calcium, and zinc, chromium with a very acidic pH when compared with water from non-gas flared sources. Also, microbial load increased the farther the distance from the flare site. The human health imparts of the presence of heavy metals and microorganisms in drinking water had been reported. In conclusion, gas flaring can pollute water sources within oil and gas facilities, thereby making them unsuitable for human consumption. Oil and gas industries should therefore treat water within their areas of operations before discharged into water bodies in addition to other remediation measures as part of their social responsibility.

Opis:: This study aimed at the simultaneous treatment of wastewater obtained from swine and generation of bioenergy in form of electricity from the energy stored in the organic component of the wastewater. The Open circuit voltage, current, power density and microbiological and physicochemical parameters were monitored. An initial Open circuit voltage of 516mV, Current of 0.29mA, and Power density of 32.74mW/m2 were recorded, which increased to give maximum Open Circuit Voltages of 836mV, Current of 0.49mA, and Power density of 88.45mW/m2. The results revealed that The Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Organic carbon, Total Soluble solids (TSS), Ammonia, Ammonium and Ammonium-Nitrogen all showed percentage decrease of 85.92%, 51.74%, 78.16%, 98.87%, 55.87%, 55.79% and 55.90% respectively while parameters such as Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Nitrate, Nitrate-Nitrogen, Phosphates, Phosphorus and Orthophosphates however increased after treatment to give a percentage increase of -273.60%, -131.65%, -134.85%, -168.77%, -159.26%, and -157.03% respectively. Bacteria isolates identified at the biofilms on the anode were Corynebacterium specie, Bacillus specie, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Streptococcus faecalis. The results from this study further exacerbate the Bioelectricity production as well as wastewater treatment potentials of the Microbial Fuel Cell technology.

Opis:: The capacity of Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) to produce voltage and concurrently treat abattoir waste water was investigated in MFCs that used 0.1M potassium ferricyanide (K3[Fe(CN)6] as catholytes. Physicochemical, electrochemical and Microbiological properties of the MFCs were monitored. The open circuit voltage (OCV) readings were taken at 3 hours interval and maximum OCV of 965mV was recorded. Also, The physicochemical characteristics of the MFCs revealed that the pH decreased by 0.2 after treatment; Chemical Oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand, total suspended solids, ammonia, and total nitrogen reduced by 88.4%, 65.56%, 43.88%, 60% and 60% respectively. However, Phosphate increased by 54%. The bacterial isolates from the raw abattoir wastewater were Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis, Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli and Micrococcus luteus while Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus cereus and Escherichia coli were isolated from the biofilms on the anode. Microbial fuel cells therefore have capacities for simultaneous waste water treatment and electricity generation.
