Opis:
I describe Archaeonothos henkgodthelpi gen. et. sp. nov., a small (estimated body mass ~40–80 g) tribosphenic metatherian from the early Eocene Tingamarra Fauna of southeastern Queensland, Australia. This taxon, known only from a single isolated upper molar (M2 or M3) is characterised by a very distinctive combination of dental features that, collectively, probably represent faunivorous adaptations. These include: a straight, elevated centrocrista; a metacone considerably taller than the paracone; a wide stylar shelf (~50% of the total labiolingual width of the tooth); reduced stylar cusps; a long postmetacrista; a small and anteroposteriorly narrow protocone; an unbasined trigon; and the absence of conules. Some of these features are seen in dasyuromorphians, but detailed comparisons reveal key differences between A. henkgodthelpi and all known members of this clade. A. henkgodthelpi also predates recent molecular estimates for the divergence of crown-group Dasyuromorphia. Similar dental features are seen in a number of other metatherians, including the South American sparassodonts, Wirunodon chanku from the ?middle–late Eocene Santa Rosa local fauna of Peru, and Kasserinotherium tunisiense from the early Eocene Chambi fauna of Tunisia, although whether A. henkgodthelpi is closely related to any of these taxa is unclear based on available evidence. I therefore refer A. henkgodthelpi to Metatheria incertae sedis. Potential relatives of A. henkgodthelpi are unknown from any other Australian fossil deposit.

Opis:
Introduction: The industrial and socio-economic development is the direct cause of changes in major health threats in highly developed societies. Diabetes is a civilization disease and it depends on the impaired action of insulin. Together with its complications, it is a significant cause of deaths all over the world. Purpose: To assess the level and trends of potential years of life lost (PYLL) due to diabetes in Poland in the years 2002-2013. For specific purposes, it is necessary to assess the PYLL level and the dynamics of PYLL rates due to diabetes and comparison with all causes of death. Materials and Methods: The research material consists of data from generally available databases from the Polish Statistical Office. Potentially lost years of life were calculated using the method proposed by J-M Romeder. Premature deaths have been defined as deaths occurring before the age of 70. Trends in PYLL coefficients were generated by the computer program Joinpoint Regression Programme. Results: The results of the conducted analysis unambiguously indicate the increase in the PYLL ratio due to diabetes was observed in both the general population and the male population. The higher rate of PYLL growth and its much higher level in the male population, compared to the female population, point out to the fact that men die much younger because of diabetes. The dynamics of the PYLL coefficient trends connected with all causes of death indicate the reduction of premature mortality.

Deciphering the radio-star formation correlation on kpc scales : III. Radio-dim and bright regions in spiral galaxies

Opis:
The relation between the resolved star formation rate (SFR) per unit area and the nonthermal radio continuum emission is studied in 21 Virgo cluster galaxies and the two nearby spiral galaxies, NGC 6946 and M 51. For the interpretation and understanding of our results, we used a 3D model where star formation, 2D cosmic-ray (CR) propagation, and the physics of synchrotron emission are included. Based on the linear correlation between the SFR per unit area and the synchrotron emission and its scatter, radio-bright and radio-dim regions can be robustly defined for our sample of spiral galaxies. We identified CR diffusion or streaming as the physical causes of radio-bright regions of unperturbed symmetric spiral galaxies as NGC 6946. The enhanced magnetic field in the region of interstellar medium (ISM) compression via ram pressure is responsible for the southwestern radio-bright region in NGC 4501. We identified the probable causes of radio-bright regions in several galaxies as CR transport, via either gravitational tides (M 51) or galactic winds (NGC 4532) or ram pressure stripping (NGC 4330 and NGC 4522). Three galaxies are overall radio dim: NGC 4298, NGC 4535, and NGC 4567. Based on our model of synchrotron-emitting disks, we suggest that the overall radio-dim galaxies have a significantly lower magnetic field than expected by equipartition between the magnetic and turbulent energy densities. We suggest that this is linked to the difference between the timescales of the variation in the SFR and the small-scale dynamo. In NGC 4535, shear motions increase the total magnetic field strength via the induction equation, which leads to enhanced synchrotron emission with respect to the SFR in an otherwise radio-dim galactic disk. Radio-bright regions frequently coincide with asymmetric ridges of polarized radio continuum emission, and we found a clear albeit moderate correlation between the polarized radio continuum emission and the radio/SFR ratio. When compression or shear motions of the ISM are present in the galactic disk, the radio-bright regions are linked to the commonly observed asymmetric ridges of polarized radio continuum emission and represent a useful tool for the interaction diagnostics. The magnetic field is enhanced (as observed in NGC 4535 and NGC 4501) and ordered by these ISM compression and shear motions. Whereas the enhancement of the magnetic field is rather modest and does not significantly influence the radio-SFR correlation, the main effect of ISM compression and shear motions is the ordering of the magnetic field, which significantly affects the CR transport. Cosmic-ray energy losses and transport also affect the spectral index, which we measured between 4.85 and 1.4 GHz. The influence of CR losses and transport on the spectral index distribution with respect to the synchrotron/SFR ratio is discussed with the help of model calculations. Based on our results, we propose a scenario for the interplay between star formation, CR electrons, and magnetic fields in spiral galaxies.

Opis:
Experiments have been performed to determine the Wigner distribution and the density matrix (and for pure states the wave function) of a light mode, by using tomographic inversion of a set of measured probability distributions for quadrature amplitudes. From these measurements the quantum distributions of optical phase and photon number have been obtained. The measurements of quadrature-amplitude distributions for a temporal mode of the electromagnetic field are carried out using balanced homodyne detection. We refer to this new method as optical homodyne tomography. Given the measured density matrix, one can experimentally infer any of the various quantum distributions of optical phase, in particular the Pegg-Barnett (or, equivalently, Shapiro-Shepard) phase distribution, the marginal Wigner distribution, and the Vogel-Schleich operational phase distribution. We have used this approach to make measurements of the number-phase uncertainty relation for coherent-state fields. The coherent states do not attain the minimum value for the number-phase uncertainty product, as set by the expectation value of the commutator of the number and phase operators; this is true theoretically and experimentally.

Intergalactic magnetic fields in Stephans Quintet

Opis:
We present the results from the Very Large Array radio continuum total power and polarized intensity observations of Stephan's Quintet at 1.43 and 4.86 GHz, along with complementary 4.85- and 8.35-GHz Effelsberg observations. Our study shows a large envelope of radio emission encompassing all the member galaxies and hence a large volume of intergalactic matter. Infall of the galaxy NGC 7318B produces a ridge of intergalactic, polarized emission, for which the magnetic field strength has been estimated as 11.0 $\pm$ 2.2 μG, with an ordered component of 2.6 $\pm$ 0.8 $\mu$G. The energy density of the field within the ridge area is of the same order as estimates of the thermal component, implying that the magnetic field has a significant role in the dynamics of the intergalactic matter. We also report that the tidal dwarf galaxy candidate SQ-B possesses a strong and highly anisotropic magnetic field, with a total strength equal to 6.5 $\pm$ 1.9 $\mu$G and an ordered component reaching 3.5 $\pm$ 1.2 $\mu$ G, which is comparable to that found in normal-sized galaxies.
