Opis:
We presenta low-cost, stand-alone global-time-synchronized data acquisition system. Our prototype allows recording up to four analog signals with a16-bit resolution invariable ranges and a maximum sampling rate of 1000 S/s. The system simultaneously acquires readouts of external sensors, e.g., magnetometer or thermometer. A complete data set, including a header containing timestamp, is stored on a Secure Digital (SD) card or transmitted to a computer using Universal Serial Bus (USB). The estimated time accuracy of the data acquisition is better than 7200 ns. The device is intended for use in a global network of optical magnetometers (the Global Network of Optical Magnetometers for Exotic physics – GNOME), which aims to search for signals heralding physics beyond the Standard Model, that can be generated by ordinary spin coupling to exotic particles or anomalous spin interactions.

Opis:
Searches for pseudo-magnetic spin couplings require implementation of techniques capable of sensitive detection of such interactions. While Spin-Exchange Relaxation Free (SERF) magnetometry is one of the most powerful approaches enabling the searches, it suffers from a strong magnetic coupling, deteriorating the pseudo-magnetic coupling sensitivity. To address this problem, here, we compare, via numerical simulations, the performance of SERF magnetometer and noble-gas-alkali-metal co-magnetometer, operating in a so-called self-compensating regime. We demonstrate that the co-magnetometer allows reduction of the sensitivity to low-frequency magnetic fields without loss of the sensitivity to nonmagnetic couplings. Based on that we investigate the responses of both systems to the oscillating and transient spin perturbations. Our simulations reveal about five orders of magnitude stronger response to the neutron pseudo-magnetic coupling and about three orders of magnitude stronger response to the proton pseudo-magnetic coupling of the co-magnetometer than those of the SERF magnetometer. Different frequency responses of the co-magnetometer to magnetic and nonmagnetic perturbations enables differentiation between these two types of interactions. This outlines the ability to implement the co-magnetometer as an advanced sensor for the Global Network of Optical Magnetometer for Exotic Physics searches (GNOME), aiming at detection of ultra-light bosons (e.g., axion-like particles).

Vector light shift averaging in paraffin-coated alkali vapor cells

Opis:
Light shifts are an important source of noise and systematics in optically pumped magnetometers. We demonstrate that the long spin-coherence time in paraffin-coated cells leads to spatial averaging of the vector light shift over the entire cell volume. This renders the averaged vector light shift independent, under certain approximations, of the light-intensity distribution within the sensor cell. Importantly, the demonstrated averaging mechanism can be extended to other spatially varying phenomena in anti-relaxation-coated cells with long coherence times.

Opis:
Magnetometry using nitrogen-vacancy (N-𝑉) color centers in diamond predominantly relies on microwave spectroscopy. However, microwaves may hinder certain studies involving biological systems or thin conductive samples. This work demonstrates a wide-field, microwave-free imaging magnetometer utilizing N-𝑉 centers in nanodiamonds by exploiting the cross-relaxation feature near zero magnetic fields under ambient conditions without applying microwaves. For this purpose, we measure the center shift, contrast, and linewidth of zero-field cross relaxation in 140-nm nanodiamonds dropcast on a current-carrying conductive pattern while scanning a background magnetic field, achieving a sensitivity of 4.5 μ⁢T/√Hz. Our work allows for applying the N-𝑉 zero-field feature in nanodiamonds for magnetic-field sensing in the zero- and low-field regimes and highlights the potential for microwave-free all-optical wide-field magnetometry based on nanodiamonds.

Opis:
Vapor cells with antirelaxation coating are widely used in modern atomic physics experiments due to the coating's ability to maintain the atoms' spin polarization during wall collisions. We characterize the performance of vapor cells with different coating materials by measuring longitudinal spin relaxation and vapor density at temperatures up to 95 °C. We infer that the spin-projection-noise-limited sensitivity for atomic magnetometers with such cells improves with temperature, which demonstrates the potential of antirelaxation coated cells in applications of future high-sensitivity magnetometers.

Opis:
The exchange of spin-0 or spin-1 bosons between fermions or spin-polarized macroscopic objects gives rise to various spin-dependent potentials. We derive the coordinate-space nonrelativistic potentials induced by the exchange of such bosons, including contact terms that can play an important role in atomic-scale phenomena, and correct for errors and omissions in the literature. We summarize the properties of the potentials and their relevance for various types of experiments. These potentials underpin the interpretation of experiments that search for new bosons, including spectroscopy, torsion-pendulum measurements, magnetometry, parity nonconservation, and electric dipole moment experiments.
