Opis:
The influence of the physical and chemical composition of corn distillers dried grains with solubles on its flowability was evaluated in the current study. The samples were evaluated for angle of repose, compressibility, Hausner ratio, tapped density, bulk density, mean bulk density, colour and nutrient content. PROC CORR and REG procedures were used to determine correlations. The ether extract was negatively correlated with crude protein and redness (a*), while crude protein was negatively correlated with yellowness (b*). Acid detergent fibre and neutral detergent fibre were negatively correlated with a* and positively correlated with lightness (L*), respectively. Compressibility showed a negative correlation with bulk density. Bulk density, tapped density and mean bulk density did not impact the angle of repose. The angle of repose was positively correlated with the compressibility and Hausner ratio. Apart from the correlation between acid detergent fibre and tapped density, the angle of repose and other physical parameters were not affected by the nutrient composition of the distillers dried grains with solubles samples. In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that nutrient composition has little influence over the flowability of distillers dried grains with solubles but compressibility and the Hausner ratio can be used to predict the potential flow characteristics of corn distillers dried grains with solubles.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono opracowany model algorytmiczny systemu do wspomagania pozycjonowania końcówki bronchofiberoskopu, względem organów anatomicznych człowieka, podczas zabiegu igłowej, przezoskrzelowej biopsji aspiracyjnej.
In the paper developed algorithmic model of a computer system for bronchofiberoscope positioning (in respect to human body organs) during transbronchial needle-aspiration biopsy is described. Its goal is to help a doctor to take a probe of a pathologically enlarged lesion (found during computed tomography examination) by means of needle aspiration performed from bronchial tree interior. The system exploits an idea of registration of two images: the real one, coming from endoscope camera, and, the virtual one, synthesized on the base of computed tomography data. Main building blocks of the navigation algorithm are presented and possibility of its future real-time implementation is discussed.

Opis:
The quality of red blood cells (RBCs) is crucial in transfusion efficacy and safety, particularly in high-risk patients. In this study, age-related biochemical alterations in stored pRBCs were investigated using a systematic, paired comparison of samples collected from pilot tubes and the main storage bags. The analyses were based on spectroscopic measurements of the isolated supernatant mixture containing RBC-derived metabolites and hemolysis products, instead of intact red blood cells. This proof-of-concept demonstrates that pilot tube samples may not reliably reflect the biochemical state of pRBCs stored in the main bag. Our findings revealed that RBCs stored in pilot tubes undergo accelerated degradation, as indicated by elevated hemoglobin concentration, increased lactate levels, reduced glucose content, and a higher lipid-to-protein ratio. Semiquantitative analysis showed that these markers were elevated by approximately 20–100% by the seventh week of storage compared to those observed in the main blood bags. These consistent trends underscore that pilot tube samples do not reliably reflect the true biochemical quality of pRBCs intended for transfusion. Notably, the study highlights the high diagnostic potential of FTIR and Raman spectroscopies in assessing blood quality in a rapid, non-destructive manner. These techniques offer a promising tool for point-of-care evaluation of RBC integrity directly through the storage bag, enabling improved transfusion decision-making, especially in critical care settings. By directly comparing pilot tube and main bag samples, this study reveals systematic differences in their biochemical profiles and proposes a spectroscopic framework for representative, non-invasive evaluation of pRBC quality.

Opis:
Packed red blood cells (pRBCs), the most commonly transfused blood product, are exposed to environmental disruptions during storage in blood banks. In this study, temporal sequence of changes in the ion exchange in pRBCs was analyzed. Standard techniques commonly used in electrolyte measurements were implemented. The relationship between ion exchange and red blood cells (RBCs) morphology was assessed with use of atomic force microscopy with reference to morphological parameters. Variations observed in the Na+, K+, Cl−, H+, HCO3−, and lactate ions concentration show a complete picture of singly-charged ion changes in pRBCs during storage. Correlation between the rate of ion changes and blood group type, regarding the limitations of our research, suggested, that group 0 is the most sensitive to the time-dependent ionic changes. Additionally, the impact of irreversible changes in ion exchange on the RBCs membrane was observed in nanoscale. Results demonstrate that the level of ion leakage that leads to destructive alterations in biochemical and morphological properties of pRBCs depend on the storage timepoint.

Opis:
This work shows the application of vibrational spectroscopy supported by other complementary techniques in analysis of tissues altered by vascular diseases, in particular atherosclerosis. The analysis of atherosclerotic plaque components, as well as label-free imaging of vessels and identification of biochemical markers of endothelial dysfunction are reported. Additionally, the potential of vibrational spectroscopy imaging in following the disease progression (including calcification) and pathological changes in heart valves is described. The presented research shows the effectiveness of techniques used in the biochemical studies of altered tissues and summarizes their capabilities in research on vascular diseases. The scope of the paper is to collect previously published work connected with the application of Raman spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy and complementary methods for the investigation of vascular diseases ex vivo and presenting it in a comprehensive overview.
