Opis:
The recovery of aluminum from water purification sludge is usually performed by making the solution acidic or basic. However, for economic reasons and reasons of safety, excessive doses of acid or base should not be utilized. Accordingly, the aluminum concentration in the leached solution is typically limited, thus the recovered aluminum cannot be directly reused as a coagulant. A nanofiltration (NF) membrane can be used in the acidic solution to concentrate high-valence metal ions. There-fore, in this work, H2SO4 was utilized to leach Al3+ ions from water purification sludge. Then, the Al3+ ion solution was concentrated using a low-price NF membrane. The effect of natural organic matter on the Al3+ ion concentrating efficiency in the filtration process has been elucidated. Experimental results reveal that Al3+ ions were effectively prevented from passing through the NF membrane, enabling a highly concentrated aluminum solution to be obtained. However, the presence of organic compounds may reduce the efficiency of the concentration of Al3+ ions in the solution.

Opis:
Theory of optical properties of interacting electrons and holes in quasi-2D quantum dots in strong magnetic fields is discussed. In two dimensions and the lowest Landau level, hidden symmetries control the interaction of the interacting system with light. By confining electrons and holes into quantum dots hidden symmetries can be removed and the excitation spectrum of electrons and excitons can be observed. We discuss a theory electronic and of excitonic quantum Hall droplets at a filling factorν=2. For an excitonic quantum Hall droplet the characteristic emission spectra are predicted to be related to the total spin of electron and hole configurations. For the electronic droplet the excitation spectrum of the droplet can be mapped out by measuring the emission for increasing number of electrons.

A wavelength conversion scheme is presented experimentally using a wavelength tunable erbium-doped fiber laser as a probe light source and an electroabsorption modulator with a DC bias only. For the input wavelength of 1557nm with a 10-Gb/s non-return to zero signal, the Q value is 10.6and the power penalty is less than 1.5dB at a bit error rate of 10–9 at the probe wavelength of1560nm. Given a fixed Q value of 6, probe wavelengths cover a range of 25nm. Furthermore, the relationship between the range of probe wavelength and the amount of power penalty is alsoinvestigated.

Opis:
Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) is a vital water constituent in aquatic ecosystems that contributes to water colour, affects light penetration, and impacts primary production. This study aims to determine the spatial and monsoonal variability of CDOM absorption properties in the Likas estuary, characterise the source of CDOM, and investigate the correlations between CDOM absorption properties and salinity. Likas estuary is a small estuary located in Kota Kinabalu city on the west coast of Sabah, facing the South China Sea. A mangrove ecosystem surrounds it with manufactured structures such as residential areas and public facilities. Surface water samples were collected at 19 stations: upstream of rivers to the river mouth and coastal area during spring tides every month, from June 2018 to July 2019, for 14-months. The distribution of aCDOM(440) in the study area is predictable as a signature in a coastal area with a decreasing gradient from the upstream towards coastal water (0.29 ± 0.19 m−1 to 1.05 ± 0.39 m−1). There are increasing spatial patterns of spectral slopes S275-295 and SR. However, S350-400 and S300-600 declined spatial gradients from the upstream to coastal water. Thus, S300-600 indicates a linear relationship between aCDOM(440), which unconventional results in coastal water. We suspect this is due to a small coverage of the study site with a distance of 0.5 m intervals of each station. This could be why the S300-600 had constant values throughout the study area (with no statistical difference between stations). In addition, S300-600 was merely varied in the stations located at the river mouth and coastal water. Based on the spectral slope ratio (SR), most of the stations located in the Darau, Inanam, and Bangka-Bangka rivers had SR values less than 1. Hence, CDOM in these stations is a terrestrial-dominated source. Therefore, from our observations during the study period, monsoonal variation could alter the source of CDOM in the study area.

Opis:
Proportional electroluminescence (EL) in noble gases is used in two-phase detectors for dark matter searches to record (in the gas phase) the ionization signal induced by particle scattering in the liquid phase. The "standard" EL mechanism is considered to be due to noble gas excimer emission in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV). In addition, there are two alternative mechanisms, producing light in the visible and near infrared (NIR) ranges. The first is due to bremsstrahlung of electrons scattered on neutral atoms ("neutral bremsstrahlung", NBrS). The second, responsible for electron avalanche scintillation in the NIR at higher electric fields, is due to transitions between excited atomic states. In this work, we have for the first time demonstrated two alternative techniques of the optical readout of two-phase argon detectors, in the visible and NIR range, using a silicon photomultiplier matrix and electroluminescence due to either neutral bremsstrahlung or avalanche scintillation. The amplitude yield and position resolution were measured for these readout techniques, which allowed to assess the detection threshold for electron and nuclear recoils in two-phase argon detectors for dark matter searches. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first practical application of the NBrS effect in detection science.

Opis:
Large liquid argon detectors offer one of the best avenues for the detection of galactic weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) via their scattering on atomic nuclei. The liquid argon target allows exquisite discrimination between nuclear and electron recoil signals via pulse-shape discrimination of the scintillation signals. Atmospheric argon (AAr), however, has a naturally occurring radioactive isotope, $^{39}$Ar, a β emitter of cosmogenic origin. For large detectors, the atmospheric $^{39}$Ar activity poses pile-up concerns. The use of argon extracted from underground wells, deprived of $^{39}$Ar, is key to the physics potential of these experiments. The DarkSide-20k dark matter search experiment will operate a dual-phase time projection chamber with 50 tonnes of radio-pure underground argon (UAr), that was shown to be depleted of $^{39}$Ar with respect to AAr by a factor larger than 1400. Assessing the $^{39}$Ar content of the UAr during extraction is crucial for the success of DarkSide-20k, as well as for future experiments of the Global Argon Dark Matter Collaboration (GADMC). This will be carried out by the DArT in ArDM experiment, a small chamber made with extremely radio-pure materials that will be placed at the centre of the ArDM detector, in the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC) in Spain. The ArDM LAr volume acts as an active veto for background radioactivity, mostly γ-rays from the ArDM detector materials and the surrounding rock. This article describes the DArT in ArDM project, including the chamber design and construction, and reviews the background required to achieve the expected performance of the detector.

Opis:
Context. The nearby elliptical galaxy M87 contains one of only two supermassive black holes whose emission surrounding the event horizon has been imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). In 2018, more than two dozen multi-wavelength (MWL) facilities (from radio to γ-ray energies) took part in the second M87 EHT campaign. Aims. The goal of this extensive MWL campaign was to better understand the physics of the accreting black hole M87*, the relationship between the inflow and inner jets, and the high-energy particle acceleration. Understanding the complex astrophysics is also a necessary first step towards performing further tests of general relativity. Methods. The MWL campaign took place in April 2018, overlapping with the EHT M87* observations. We present a new, contemporaneous spectral energy distribution (SED) ranging from radio to very high-energy (VHE) γ-rays as well as details of the individual observations and light curves. We also conducted phenomenological modelling to investigate the basic source properties. Results. We present the first VHE γ-ray flare from M87 detected since 2010. The flux above 350 GeV more than doubled within a period of ≈36 hours. We find that the X-ray flux is enhanced by about a factor of two compared to 2017, while the radio and millimetre core fluxes are consistent between 2017 and 2018. We detect evidence for a monotonically increasing jet position angle that corresponds to variations in the bright spot of the EHT image. Conclusions. Our results show the value of continued MWL monitoring together with precision imaging for addressing the origins of high-energy particle acceleration. While we cannot currently pinpoint the precise location where such acceleration takes place, the new VHE γ-ray flare already presents a challenge to simple one-zone leptonic emission model approaches, and it emphasises the need for combined image and spectral modelling.
