Why people fail on the fluid intelligence tests

The study examined the patterns of errors in a specially designed test of analogical reasoning. The results indicated that those patterns strongly depended on participants’ ability level that was measured by another two fluid intelligence tests. Relatively good reasoners made analogy-making errors primarily resulting from not binding a single relational element to the complete solution. This fact indicates that they properly carried out a reasoning process, but missed just one reasoning step. In contrast, poor reasoners more often chose erroneous options that missed several relational elements, but were perceptually similar to target analogs, what suggests that those reasoners did not follow the necessary rules. Moreover, the reasoning scores of poor reasoners depended more strongly on measures of working memory capacity than did scores of good reasoners. The results are interpreted in terms of several seminal theories of fluid intelligence.

Fluid intelligence and the cross-frequency coupling of neuronal oscillations

Several existing theoretical models predict that the individual capacity of working memory and abstract reasoning (fluid intelligence) strongly depends on certain features of neuronal oscillations, especially their cross-frequency coupling. Empirical evidence supporting these predictions is still scarce, but it makes the future studies on oscillatory coupling a promising line of research that can uncover the physiological underpinnings of fluid intelligence. Cross-frequency coupling may serve as the optimal level of description of neurocognitive processes, integrating their genetic, structural, neurochemical, and bioelectrical underlying factors with explanations in terms of cognitive operations driven by neuronal oscillations.

Fluid intelligence emerges from representing relations

Based on recent findings in cognitive neuroscience and psychology as well as computational models of working memory and reasoning, I argue that fluid intelligence (fluid reasoning) can amount to representing in the mind the key relation(s) for the task at hand. Effective representation of relations allows for enormous flexibility of thinking but depends on the validity and robustness of the dynamic patterns of argument-object (role-filler) bindings, which encode relations in the brain. Such a reconceptualization of the fluid intelligence construct allows for the simplification and purification of its models, tests, and potential brain mechanisms.

When are fluid intelligence and working memory isomorhic and when are they not?

Study 1 investigated whether the strength of correlation between latent variables representing working memory capacity (WMC) and fluid intelligence (Gf) depends on the time allowed to work on an intelligence test. When the half recommended time was given to fulfill two Gf tests, WMC and Gf were statistically indistinguishable, indicating that working memory and fluid intelligence are fully isomorphic constructs. However, when virtually no time limit was applied, WMC explained only 38% of variance in Gf. Further analyses suggested that only the latter testing conditions allowed low-capacity participants for relational learning during test taking, which allowed them to reduce their distance to high-capacity people. Study 2 corroborated the moderate value of WM–Gf correlation in untimed intelligence testing with a larger number of Gf and WM tasks, as well as showed that the indices of learning in a novel test of relation discovery predict significant amount of Gf variance. In sum, the research suggests that fluid reasoning can be differently related to WMC depending on the time pressure during Gf testing, and it also indicates that learning abstract relational representations may be an important component of unspeeded intelligence, but barely takes place during speeded testing.

The broad factor of working memory is virtually isomorphic to fluid intelligence tested under time pressure

How much overall variance in fluid intelligence (Gf) can be predicted by four working memory (WM) functions: storage capacity, attention control, relational integration, and updating was investigated under time pressured Gf testing. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the broad WM factor, which was subsumed by these four WM functions, shared 83.4% of variance with Gf tested under pressure, whereas a reanalysis of previous data with the same model showed that only 58.2% variance was shared with virtually untimed Gf tests. Moreover, in timed Gf tests, only the easiest, early items contributed to the WM-Gf correlation, whereas in untimed tests also the hardest, late items were linked with Gf. These results suggest that the measurement of “fast” intelligence primarily taps the functions of WM, whereas “slow(er)” intelligence depends also on some other cognitive processes beyond WM.
