Opis:
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the cellular radiosensitivity and radiation-induced DNA damage and repair in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Cell survival after irradiation was assessed using the clonogenic assay. The initial, radio-induced and residual DNA damage in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells exposed to 60Co gamma-rays were determined using the alkaline comet assay. A linear-quadratic (LQ) survival curve was observed in CHO line. Data obtained by comet assay demonstrated a linear dose-response correlation in the range of tested doses (0.3-4 Gy). The process of DNA repair was modeled by exponential equation. In addition, we found a good correlation (R2 = 0.995) between clonogenic cell survival and radio-induced DNA damage.

Opis:
Since the mid 1990's, an increasing number of charged particle microbeams have been designed to deliver a preset number of ions to individual living cells with the micron resolution. These tools provide a powerful technique to investigate the cellular response to low doses of radiations. During the last years, the single ion hit facility in operation on the GSI microbeam since 1987 has been upgraded for the irradiation of individual living cells in vitro. This setup presents two main peculiarities compared to the microbeams used up to now for cell irradiation. First, the beam's micrometric size is obtained by magnetic focusing and not by a simple collimation. This allows obtaining a smaller beam spot, a better defined linear energy transfer, and a high irradiation throughput. Then, the GSI microbeam is able to focus ions from carbon to uranium with energies between 1.4 MeV/u to 11.4 MeV/u. The range of accessible linear energy transfer is thus considerably extended compared to light ions microbeam in operation today. The design of the GSI microbeam is described, including the beam control, the online cell localisation, the cell dish designed specifically for microbeam irradiation, and the cell irradiation procedures. Experimental tests performed to check the global aiming accuracy as well as the first cellular irradiations are presented.

Opis:
A number of efficient solutions are already in existence today for reducing specific energy and raw material needs, and they are continuously being improved. Since the competition between individual solutions for sustained energy efficiency may prove to be an obstacle to the system as a whole, the interaction of individual elements and sub-systems in complex domains must be considered in an integrated way with an eye to their reciprocal energy effects. What will be the impact of energy savings resulting from innovative approaches and intelligent solutions at a single systemic level on the system as a whole? Do they serve to reduce overall energy costs? What kinds of energy-related information are necessary to answer these questions? This article examines the issue of how dedicated energy savings in the production sector impact on the total energy requirement in factory systems. In one example, process and building are examined together in order to thereby recognize energy relationships. It was demonstrate that waste heat from machine tools has a significant impact on the factory hall climate and therefore on the heating needs of factory buildings. A model calculation demonstrated that energy savings at individual system levels are transferable to the entire system in direct proportion to the energy efficiency of the building.

Opis:
Ichthyosaurs rapidly diversified and colonised a wide range of ecological niches during the Early and Middle Triassic period, but experienced a major decline in diversity near the end of the Triassic. Timing and causes of this demise and the subsequent rapid radiation of the diverse, but less disparate, parvipelvian ichthyosaurs are still unknown, notably because of inadequate sampling in strata of latest Triassic age. Here, we describe an exceptionally large radius from Lower Jurassic deposits at Penarth near Cardiff, south Wales (UK) the morphology of which places it within the giant Triassic shastasaurids. A tentative total body size estimate, based on a regression analysis of various complete ichthyosaur skeletons, yields a value of 12-15 m. The specimen is substantially younger than any previously reported last known occurrences of shastasaurids and implies a Lazarus range in the lowermost Jurassic for this ichthyosaur morphotype.

Photoluminescence spectra of type-II ZnSe/BeTe superlattices were studied. A linear polarised photoluminescence has been found in the spectral range of spatially indirect exciton transitions. This observation is interpreted in a model of optical anisotropy of heterostructures with no-common atom at interfaces.

Opis:
This paper discusses Roman and Byzantine tombs and burial caves at Yavneh-Yam (the harbor site of ancient Iamnia) excavated in the 1960s and 1980s. It focuses on the finds recovered during these excavations as a means to enhance our knowledge on the site’s social and religious history vis-à-vis the inhabited site’s recent excavations and studies. More specifically, the discussed funerary remains reflect the changes in the site’s social composition between Early Roman to Byzantine times. While in the Early Roman period Yavneh-Yam was probably predominantly Jewish, in Late Roman and mainly Byzantine times it was developed into a large and thriving harbor town whose mixed population was composed of polytheists, Jews, Samaritans and Christians.
