Opis:
Wood pellets are increasingly being used to produce energy as a part of the decarbonization process of the economy, but their handling is associated with several problems, which usually requires that the equipment used has to be modified and improved. The discrete element method is a numerical technique suitable for simulating individual particles and handling systems. This paper focuses on the determination of the mechanical and physical parameters for wood pellet particles which are required to develop a discrete element method model to improve handling and transport systems. This study reports the experimentally determined values for wood pellet particles with respect to particle density, modulus of elasticity, particle – particle and particle – wall coefficients of restitution, and particle – particle and particle – wall coefficients of friction. Following the previous findings by other researchers with large samples of bulk material, it has been found that the modulus of elasticity for individual wood pellets depends on the water content, and the particle – wall coefficient of restitution depends on the impact velocity.

Opis:
Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are fascinating events due to their panchromatic nature. We study optical plateaus in GRB afterglows via an extended search into archival data. We comprehensively analyze all published GRBs with known redshifts and optical plateaus observed by many ground-based telescopes (e.g., Subaru Telescope, RATIR) around the world and several space-based observatories such as the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. We fit 500 optical light curves, showing the existence of the plateau in 179 cases. This sample is 75% larger than the previous one, and it is the largest compilation so far of optical plateaus. We discover the 3D fundamental plane relation at optical wavelengths using this sample. This correlation is between the rest-frame time at the end of the plateau emission, $T_{opt}^{*}$, its optical luminosity, $L_{opt}$, and the peak in the optical prompt emission, $L_{peak,opt}$, thus resembling the three-dimensional (3D) X-ray fundamental plane (the so-called 3D Dainotti relation). We correct our sample for redshift evolution and selection effects, discovering that this correlation is indeed intrinsic to GRB physics. We investigate the rest-frame end-time distributions in X-rays and optical ($T_{opt}^{*}$, $T_{X}^{*}$), and conclude that the plateau is achromatic only when selection biases are not considered. We also investigate if the 3D optical correlation may be a new discriminant between optical GRB classes and find that there is no significant separation between the classes compared to the Gold sample plane after correcting for evolution.

Opis:
We present the largest optical photometry compilation of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) with redshifts (z). We include 64813 observations of 535 events (including upper limits) from 28 February 1997 to 18 August 2023. We also present a user-friendly web tool grbLC which allows users to visualize photometry, coordinates, redshift, host galaxy extinction, and spectral indices for each event in our database. Furthermore, we have added a Gamma-ray Coordinate Network (GCN) scraper that can be used to collect data by gathering magnitudes from the GCNs. The web tool also includes a package for uniformly investigating colour evolution. We compute the optical spectral indices for 138 GRBs, for which we have at least four filters at the same epoch in our sample, and craft a procedure to distinguish between GRBs with and without colour evolution. By providing a uniform format and repository for the optical catalogue, this web-based archive is the first step towards unifying several community efforts to gather the photometric information for all GRBs with known redshifts. This catalogue will enable population studies by providing light curves (LCs) with better coverage since we have gathered data from different ground-based locations. Consequently, these LCs can be used to train future LC reconstructions for an extended inference of the redshift. The data gathering also allows us to fill some of the orbital gaps from Swift in crucial points of the LCs, e.g. at the end of the plateau emission or where a jet break is identified.

Opis:
The paper describes the synthesis and characterization of two third generation dendrimers from citric acid and a variant with a dendron terminated with lipoic acid. FTIR and C NMR confirmed the presence of signals characteristic for the dendrimer functional groups OH, C-O, C=O, C-H and C-S. DSC showed that, unlike citric acid, the dendrimer is amorphous. SEM revealed changes in the structure of citric acid particles in each dendrimer generation. In addition, the structure was more homogeneous. Dendrimers are hydrophobic due to ester linkages. Contact angle > 90° confirms their hydrophobic char-acter. Moreover, the dendrimer with a dendron terminated with lipoic acid absorbs Cu+2 and Fe+3metal ions, so it can be used as an adsorbent for heavy metals.

Opis:
Context. The nearby elliptical galaxy M87 contains one of only two supermassive black holes whose emission surrounding the event horizon has been imaged by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). In 2018, more than two dozen multi-wavelength (MWL) facilities (from radio to γ-ray energies) took part in the second M87 EHT campaign. Aims. The goal of this extensive MWL campaign was to better understand the physics of the accreting black hole M87*, the relationship between the inflow and inner jets, and the high-energy particle acceleration. Understanding the complex astrophysics is also a necessary first step towards performing further tests of general relativity. Methods. The MWL campaign took place in April 2018, overlapping with the EHT M87* observations. We present a new, contemporaneous spectral energy distribution (SED) ranging from radio to very high-energy (VHE) γ-rays as well as details of the individual observations and light curves. We also conducted phenomenological modelling to investigate the basic source properties. Results. We present the first VHE γ-ray flare from M87 detected since 2010. The flux above 350 GeV more than doubled within a period of ≈36 hours. We find that the X-ray flux is enhanced by about a factor of two compared to 2017, while the radio and millimetre core fluxes are consistent between 2017 and 2018. We detect evidence for a monotonically increasing jet position angle that corresponds to variations in the bright spot of the EHT image. Conclusions. Our results show the value of continued MWL monitoring together with precision imaging for addressing the origins of high-energy particle acceleration. While we cannot currently pinpoint the precise location where such acceleration takes place, the new VHE γ-ray flare already presents a challenge to simple one-zone leptonic emission model approaches, and it emphasises the need for combined image and spectral modelling.
