- The growing awareness of social expectations has been inducing gradual changes in the system of higher education. This article presents the idea of perceiving the university according to institutional and instrumental models. It raises issues of universities' openness to the expectations of their environments, identification of and dialogue with stakeholders. The future of the university depends on broadly-understood correct and intense relationships with its environment; its strategy should be geared towards social responsibility. Recognizing the duality of the concept of development of modern universities in the direction of entrepreneurship and social responsibility, I have focused on the expectations posed for the latter. One of the main tasks of the university, the transfer of knowledge, is of strategic importance. However, the environment, understood as a set of stakeholders with often divergent interests and expectations, does not help universities to fulfil this task. Democracy requires informed and ethically sensitive citizens. It seems that the future of universities will be to involve the citizens in the creation and development of relations with their environments, manifesting themselves in an intensification of activities for students and the whole community.
