Opis:
The aim of the present paper is to investigate surface waves in a non-homogeneous, isotropic, visco-elastic solid medium of n-th order including the time rate of strain. The theory of generalised surface waves has firstly been developed and then it has been employed to investigate particular cases of waves, viz., Stoneley, Rayleigh and Love type. The wave velocity equations have been obtained for different cases and are in well agreement with the corresponding classical result, when the effects of viscosity, temperature, magnetism as well as nonhomogeneity of the material medium are ignored.

Opis:
Oryza sativa Linn. (rice) and Corchorus capsularis Linn. (jute) are the two major crops of the Bengal basin. Both rice and jute are generally grown in submerged flooded conditions, where arsenic bioavailability is high in soil. The consumers of the edible parts from both plants therefore face an inevitable source of exposure to arsenic, with consequent accumulation and toxicity. The objective of the study was to observe the in-vivo temporal variation of arsenic bioaccumulation in the different parts of O. sativa and C. capsularis. Rice plant specimens (Aman rice, Ratna variety) of different age groups (1, 2 and 3 months old) were analyzed in HG-AAS for absorbed arsenic content in different parts. The accumulation of arsenic remained significantly high in the initial phase of growth, but decreased with time. Amount of arsenic bioaccumulation followed the decreasing order: root > basal stem > median stem > apical stem > leaves > grains in all the three age groups of the rice plant samples. C. capsularis followed a trend of arsenic bioaccumulation similar to O. sativa. O. sativa had more accumulation potential than C. capsularis, but C. capsularis showed much higher efficiency of arsenic translocation in the above ground parts. This is the first ever report of time-dependent decrease in arsenic bioaccumulation in O. sativa and C. capsularis. The contamination level can reach the grain part in significant amount and can cause health hazards in more severely arsenic affected areas. Intensive investigation on a complete food chain is urgently needed in the arsenic contaminated zones for further risk assessments.

Opis:
Nickel phosphide exists in various compositions, and the synthesis of pure-phase nickel phosphides is of immense interest due to their wide scale applications in different electrocatalytic reactions. We report the facile synthesis of nickel phosphides and rare transition metal-induced phase transformations within this system. Phase selective synthesis of pure Ni2P or Ni5P4 was achieved by decomposition of nickel acetate tetrahydrate Ni(AC)2·4H2O in optimized mixed solvent systems, i.e., in tri-octylphosphine oxide (TOPO)/tri-n-octylphosphine (TOP) or hexadecylamine (HDA)/TOP, respectively, by hot injection route. The doping of 5% Cu or Mn in either of the nickel phosphide phases yielded a mixture of phases (Ni2P/Ni5P4). However, increasing the Cu or Mn content to 10% resulted in the complete transformation of phase, i.e., from Ni2P to pure Ni5P4 and vice versa. Lattice stress and size of incorporated dopants, as well as the nature of surfactants employed, were discussed as probable causes of these rare phase transformations. Moreover, in order to establish structure–activity relationship, we studied the comparative effect of transition metal dopants in both nickel rich and nickel deficient phases. Therefore, initially formed and transformed phosphides were investigated as electrocatalysts for overall water splitting and supercapacitance. NiP-5 (Ni2P formed on 10% Cu doping of Ni5P4) delivered a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with the lowest overpotential of 146 mV among all samples for HER while NiP-3 (Ni5P4 formed from Ni2P on 10% Cu doping) similarly required the least overpotential of 276 mV for the OER at the same current density. NiP-2 (pristine Ni5P4) had the highest calculated specific capacitance of 1325 F g−1 at 2 A g−1. These phase transformations resulted in better catalytic activity and stability as well as reaction kinetics indicating suitability in practical water splitting technologies.

Opis:
The Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) is a novel device being developed at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland based on organic scintillators. J-PET is an axially symmetric (M. Mohammed) has been affiliated to affiliation 6. Please check if correct, otherwise, provide the correct affiliation.and high acceptance scanner that can be used as a multi-purpose detector system. It is well suited to pursue tests of discrete symmetries in decays of positronium in addition to medical imaging. J-PET enables the measurement of both momenta and the polarization vectors of annihilation photons. The latter is a unique feature of the J-PET detector which allows the study of time reversal symmetry violation operator which can be constructed solely from the annihilation photons momenta before and after the scattering in the detector.

Opis:
The Jagiellonian Positron Emission Tomograph (J-PET) is the first PET device built from plastic scintillators. It is a multi-purpose detector designed for medical imaging and for studies of properties of positronium atoms in porous matter and in living organisms. In this article we report on the commissioning of the J-PET detector in view of studies of positronium decays. We present results of analysis of the positron lifetime measured in the porous polymer. The obtained results prove that J-PET is capable of performing simultaneous imaging of the density distribution of annihilation points as well as positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy.
