Opis:
Objective. The present study was carried out to investigate the effects of occupational lead exposure on the hematological and biochemical parameters in occupationally exposed and non exposed inhabitants of Karachi. Material and methods. In 100 lead exposed subjects recruited from automobile workshops, lead battery repair and recycling units located in Karachi and in 100 control subjects the general health status, hematological parameters and exposure markers for lead were measured. Results. Results indicated that the mean values of blood lead level and δ-aminolevulinic acid were significantly higher (P<0.05) while the activity of δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase were significantly decreased (P<0.05) among battery repair and recycling workers as compared to controls. The abnormalities in the blood lead level, δ-aminolevulinic acid and δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase were more frequent in lead exposed battery repair workers when compared with control subjects. The blood lead levels and δ-aminolevulinic acid were positively correlated while δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase was found to be negatively correlated with age, years of exposure and years of employment. Blood lead level was positively correlated with hemoglobin and RBC count while δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase was negatively correlated with hemoglobin concentration. The work related symptoms, droopiness, nasal symptoms and muscular pain were more frequent among battery repair workers as compared to control group. The findings of present study confirmed that occupational exposure to lead is associated with deviation in important hematological parameters and biological markers of exposure to lead among lead exposed workers, and also confirms the impact of lead exposure in the development of adverse effects among lead exposed workers. Conclusions. The study provides the data for risk assessment in lead battery repair workers of Karachi and suggests the need for preventive measures for battery repair workers and improvements to reduce occupational lead exposures to protect them from lead toxicity. It is suggested that hematological and physical examinations of lead exposed workers should be carried out periodically to prevent future health hazards.
Cel. Badania przeprowadzono w celu określenia wpływu zawodowego narażenia na ołów na hematologiczne i biochemiczne parametry u zawodowo narażonych w porównaniu do nienarażonych mieszkańców Karaczi. Materiał i metody. U 100 osób narażanych na ołów spośród pracowników zatrudnionych w zakładach naprawy i przetwarzania akumulatorów w Karaczi i u 100 osób kontrolnych badano ogólny stan zdrowia, parametry hematologiczne i markery narażenia na ołów. Wyniki. Wyniki wskazują, że średnie poziomy ołowiu i kwasu δ-aminolewulinowego we krwi były znacząco wyższe (P<0.05), podczas gdy aktywność dehydratazy kwasu δ-aminolewulinowego była znacząco niższa (P<0.05) u zatrudnionych przy naprawie i przetwarzaniu akumulatorów w porównaniu do osób z grupy kontrolnej. Poziomy ołowiu we krwi i kwasu δ-aminolewulinowego były skorelowane pozytywnie podczas gdy w przypadku aktywności dehydratazy kwasu δ-aminolewulinowego stwierdzono negatywną korelację do wieku i mierzonego w latach czasu narażenia.

Opis:
In the 1990s the financial sector of Pakistan underwent massive reforms. The primary aim of restructuring was to privatize state-owned institutions, abolish entry barriers for new players, and consequently increase the efficiency of the whole system. This study uses an unbalanced panel of 21 commercial banks listed at Pakistan stock exchange throughout 2000 to 2017 from “BankFocus” and “Bloomberg”. This research measures the effect of ownership, competition, and management practices on banks efficiency. The authors found a higher efficiency of private banks in comparison to state-owned counterparts. The empirical analysis suggests that an increase in foreign ownership and institutional ownership impact positively on all measures of efficiency. The relationship between competition and efficiency supports “competition-efficiency hypothesis” and proposes regulatory measures to regulate the market further. Additionally, banks with a higher standard of management practices tend to be more efficient. These findings imply that there is a need to regulate the bigger banks and ease the market entry for foreign and institutional owners, who brings superior managerial standards and hence efficiency.
W latach 90tych XX wieku sektor finansowy w Pakistanie przeszedł ogromne reformy. Autorzy stwierdzili wyższą efektywność banków prywatnych w porównaniu do państwowych odpowiedników.

Opis:
In this paper, a study was carried out to investigate the surface roughness and material removal rate of low carbon NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) machined by Wire Electro Spark Erosion (WESE) technique. Experiments are designed considering three parameters viz, spark ON time (SON), spark OFF time (SOFF), and voltage (V) at three levels each. The surface roughness increased from 2.1686 μm to 2.6869 μm with an increase in both SON time, SOFF time and a decrease in voltage. The material removal rate increased from 1.272 mm3/min to 1.616 mm3/min with an increase in SON time but a varying effect was observed the SOFF time and voltage were varied. The analysis revealed that the intensity and duration of the spark had an unswerving relation with the concentration of the microcracks and micropores. More microcracks and micropores were seen in the combination of SON = 120 μs, voltage = 30 V. The concentration of the microcracks and micropores could be minimised by using an appropriate parameter setting. Therefore, considering the surface analysis and material removal, the low carbon NiTi alloy is recommended to machine with 110 μs - 55 μs - 30 V (SON - SOFF - V respectively), to achieve better surface roughness with minimal surface damage.

Opis:
In this paper, mesoscale modeling is performed to simulate and understand fracture behavior of two concrete composites: cement and asphalt concrete using disk-shaped compact tension (DCT) tests. Mesoscale models are used as alternative to macroscale models to obtain better realistic behavior of composite and heterogeneous materials such as cement and asphalt concrete. In mesoscale models, aggregate and matrix are represented as distinct materials and each material has its characteristic properties. Disk-shaped compact tension test is used to obtain tensile strength and fracture energy of materials. This test can be used as a better alternative to other tests such as three points bending tests because it is more convenient for both field and laboratory specimens in addition to its accurate results. Comparing the numerical results of the mesoscale models of cement and asphalt concrete specimens with experimental data shows that these models can predict the behavior of these composite materials very well as seen in the curves of load-crack mouth opening displacement (CMOD). Also, the mesoscale modeling highlights the variability of crack direction where it is dependent on the random distribution of aggregate.

Opis:
Background: Primary melanotic neoplasms of the central nervous system (CNS) are uncommon; amelanotic melanomas in this region are extremely rare. Very few cases of amelanotic variation of primary melanoma in the CNS were reported on. General guidelines or recommendations to establish this diagnosis do not exist. Case Report: A sixty-year-old male Hispanic patient presented with a 7-day history of numbness and dizziness. Initial laboratory work-up and physical examination were inconclusive. Cerebral radiological imaging showed a left frontal lesion. Further work-up after clinical deterioration revealed an increase in the lesion size consistent with hemorrhage and changes in T1WI. Biopsy and immunochemistry demonstrated the presence of amelanotic melanoma in the CNS without evidence of another primary lesion. Conclusions: Primary amelanotic melanoma of the CNS represents a challenge, clinically and diagnostically. Magnetic resonance imaging can be helpful in early stages. Final diagnosis is established with immunohistochemical testing. Physicians should be aware of the existence of this rare manifestation and difficulties faced while building this diagnosis.

Opis:
The primary goal of the Antihydrogen Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy (AEGIS) collaboration is to measure for the first time precisely the gravitational acceleration of antihydrogen, H̅, a fundamental issue of contemporary physics, using a beam of antiatoms. Indeed, although indirect arguments have been raised against a different acceleration of antimatter with respect to matter, nevertheless some attempts to formulate quantum theories of gravity, or to unify gravity with the other forces, consider the possibility of a non-identical gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter. We plan to generate H̅ through a charge-exchange reaction between excited Ps and antiprotons coming from the Antiproton Decelerator facility at CERN. It offers the advantage to produce sufficiently cold antihydrogen to make feasible a measurement of gravitational acceleration with reasonable uncertainty (of the order of a few percent). Since the cross-section of the above reaction increases with n⁴, n being the principal quantum number of Ps, it is essential to generate Ps in a highly excited (Rydberg) state. This will occur by means of two laser excitations of Ps emitted from a nanoporous silica target: a first UV laser (at 205 nm) will bring Ps from the ground to the n=3 state; a second laser pulse (tunable in the range 1650-1700 nm) will further excite Ps to the Rydberg state.

Opis:
In the context of the Antihydrogen Experiment: Gravity, Interferometry, Spectroscopy (AEgIS) located at CERN, positron-positronium converters with a high positron-positronium conversion efficiency have been designed in both reflection and transmission geometries. The converters utilize nanochanneled silicon target technology with positron conversion efficiencies up to around 50% and around 16%, at room temperature and in the absence of magnetic fields, for reflection and transmission respectively. The positron-positronium converters allow for the pulsed production of antihydrogen ($\overline{H}$) within the AEgIS experiment. This paper discusses the use of a pulsed $\overline{H}$ beam in a moiré deflectometer to perform a precise gravitational measurement on $\overline{H}$ at AEgIS. This work describes the principles and technical details of the current design of a moiré deflectometer using the pulsed $\overline{H}$ beam. The main goal of this work is to summarize the ongoing project of adding the described moiré deflectometer to the AEgIS experiment to further their efforts toward probing the material dependence of gravity and testing the weak equivalence principle (WEP).

Opis:
The first successful demonstration of broadband laser cooling of positronium (Ps) atoms, obtained within the AEgIS experiment at CERN, is presented here. By employing a custom-designed pulsed alexandrite laser system at 243 nm featuring long-duration pulses of 70 ns and an energy able to saturate the 13S–23P transition over the broad spectrum range of 360 GHz, the temperature of a room-temperature Ps cloud was reduced from 380 K to 170 K in 70 ns. This advancement opens new avenues for precision spectroscopy, antihydrogen production, and fundamental tests with antimatter.
