Opis:
Preparation for work in the field of peacebuilding should always be undertaken from multiple perspectives, as actions and their consequences are bound to bring about changes in many aspects, such as mental health and competences of staff responsible for peacekeeping. The general aim of the presented article is to underline the role of psychological skills necessary for high level functioning of peacemakers and peacekeepers in various countries. The presented program covers two fundamental training areas: keeping good mental health and developing cooperation skills. The main focus was placed on the way to identify barriers and challenges faced by organizers of the process of preparing and building competencies in the scope of conflict prevention, protection of own resources (health protection area) and group resources (social capital area). An important aspect of raising the competencies of staff engaged in building and maintaining peace is the ability to control emotions and to counteract pathological reactions connected with working under prolonged stress caused, for instance, by changing one’s place of stay, encounters with strangers and hostile persons, huge pressure and responsibility.

Opis:
This paper proposes an assessment of the links between freight trip generation (FTG) rates and accessibility. First, the paper overviews the background, sets the context and motivates the research. Second, it presents the proposed methodology, which combines an FTG model, two accessibility indicators and a linear regression analysis to assess the relationships between freight trip demand and a set of socio-demographic variables including accessibility. The FTG modelling framework, adapted from previous works, allows estimating the number of freight trips with a small amount of standard data, even when no surveyed data is available. The two gravity accessibility indexes, one potential and one exponential, are defined in the continuity of recent freight accessibility works. To those indicators, a set of socio-demographic variables, including population, area or a zone (or density), are introduced. The relationships between FTG and all those variables are assessed via standard linear regression methods completed by the verification of the corresponding linear relationship hypotheses. Third, the framework is applied to the urban area of Lyon (France), where no urban goods survey data is available. Results show that potential accessibility seems to have a better correlation to FTG and could be a good decision support indicator when combined with the population as an explanatory variable. The population can be added to accessibility as an explanatory variable, the resulting models with two variables have a slightly lower accuracy but remains close to that of models with only accessibility as an explanatory variable. This work remains exploratory and finishes by proposing practical implications and further development lines.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of a comparative study of the land system of the city square and adjacent buildings for Rzeszów in Poland. The study made use of a cadastral map at a scale of 1:2880 and a modern land and building record map. For the purpose of adjusting reference systems, the cadastral map recorded in the form of a digital raster image, in accordance with applicable provisions of polish law (Journal of Laws No. 263 §49), was subjected to a two-stage calibration. The first stage consisted in carrying out initial calibration with the employment of first-degree affine transformation. In the second stage, final calibration was performed using mathematical transformation that considered the distortions detected in the previous stage. The results showed shifts, consolidations, and divisions of land parcels with regard to the present state, and changes to property structure. The proposed method may prove useful for further research on historical urban system morphology, and on restoration and renewal of the urban tissue.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań porównawczych układu przestrzennego rynku miejskiego i zabudowy przyległej dla Rzeszowa w Polsce. W opracowaniu wykorzystano mapę ewidencyjną w skali 1:2880 oraz współczesną mapę ewidencyjną gruntów i budynków. W celu wyrównania układów odniesienia mapa ewidencyjna zarejestrowana w postaci cyfrowego obrazu rastrowego, zgodnie z obowiązującymi przepisami polskiego prawa - Dz.U.

Opis:
The stochastic modelling of degradation processes requires different characteristics to be considered, such that it is possible to capture all the possible information about a phenomenon under study. An important characteristic is what is known as the drift in some stochastic processes; specifically, the drift allows to obtain information about the growth degradation rate of the characteristic of interest. In some phenomenon’s the growth rate cannot be considered as a constant parameter, which means that the rate may vary from trajectory to trajectory. Given this, it is important to study alternative strategies that allow to model this variation in the drift. In this paper, several hazard rate functions are integrated in the inverse Gaussian process to describe its drift in the aims of individually characterize degradation trajectories. The proposed modelling scheme is illustrated in two case studies, from which the best fitting model is selected via information criteria, a discussion of the flexibility of the proposed models is provided according to the obtained results.

Opis:
We introduce an algebraically active disturbance rejection-based control solution for the trajectory tracking problem of an uncertain second-order flat system with unknown external disturbances. To this end, we first algebraically identify the system’s unknown dynamics and the external disturbances with a linear set of time-varying integral expressions for the output and the control signal. We use the identified dynamics on an online feedback cancellation scheme to linearize the second-order system and cancel the uncertainties. With a proportional-integral controller we stabilize the linearized system without the need to estimate the velocity and have feedback from it. We carry out the stability analysis using linear systems theory. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed controller in a partially known 2-DOF manipulator.

Opis:
There is a natural protein form, insoluble and resistant to proteolysis, adopted by many proteins independently of their amino acid sequences via specific misfolding-aggregation process. This dynamic process occurs in parallel with or as an alternative to physiologic folding, generating toxic protein aggregates that are deposited and accumulated in various organs and tissues. These proteinaceous deposits typically represent bundles of β-sheet-enriched fibrillar species known as the amyloid fibrils that are responsible for serious pathological conditions, including but not limited to neurodegenerative diseases, grouped under the term amyloidoses. The proteins that might adopt this fibrillar conformation are some globular proteins and natively unfolded (or intrinsically disordered) proteins. Our work shows that intrinsically disordered and intrinsically ordered proteins can be reliably identified, discriminated, and differentiated by analyzing their polarity profiles generated using a computational tool known as the polarity index method (Polanco & Samaniego, 2009; Polanco et al., 2012; 2013; 2013a; 2014; 2014a; 2014b; 2014c; 2014d). We also show that proteins expressed in neurons can be differentiated from proteins in these two groups based on their polarity profiles, and also that this computational tool can be used to identify proteins associated with amyloidoses. The efficiency of the proposed method is high (i.e. 70%) as evidenced by the analysis of peptides and proteins in the APD2 database (2012), AVPpred database (2013), and CPPsite database (2013), the set of selective antibacterial peptides from del Rio et al. (2001), the sets of natively unfolded and natively folded proteins from Oldfield et al. (2005), the set of human revised proteins expressed in neurons, and non-human revised proteins expressed in neurons, from the Uniprot database (2014), and also the set of amyloidogenic proteins from the AmyPDB database (2014).

Opis:
A hydroponic trial was conducted to study the effect of chloride salinity in simulated effluent on Cd accumulation by tobacco. Leaf surface area (LSA) and root surface area (RSA) measurements were incorporated as possible determinants of Cd uptake rate by plants. Results showed that individual plant differences in Cd content were normalized when including RSA to express Cd uptake rates by plants but not including LSA. A biotic ligand model (BLM) fitted to predict Cd uptake, estimated active and almost linear uptake of the free Cd2+ ion by tobacco plants, while virtually no changes in the chloride complex (CdCl+) uptake were predicted, presumably due to a rapid saturation of the hypothetical root sorption sites at the concentrations used in this trial. Nicotiana tabacum var. K326 is evidenced to be a species potentially suitable for biological wastewater treatment using rhizofiltration at concentrations commonly found in salt-affected wastewater, with high Cd accumulation (185 to 280 mg/kgdm) regardless of water salinity and tolerance up to 80 mmol/L NaCl.

Opis:
Objective: To compare the effect of glucose-lowering drugs on peripheral nerve and kidney function in prediabetes. Methods: Multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 658 adults with prediabetes treated for 1 year with metformin, linagliptin, their combination or placebo. Endpoints are small fiber peripheral neuropathy (SFPN) risk estimated by foot electrochemical skin conductance (FESC < 70 μSiemens) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR). Results: Compared to the placebo, the proportion of SFPN was reduced by 25.1% (95% CI:16.3–33.9) with metformin alone, by 17.3% (95% CI 7.4–27.2) with linagliptin alone, and by 19.5% (95% CI 10.1–29.0) with the combination linagliptin/metformin (p < 0.0001 for all comparisons). eGFR remained +3.3 mL/min (95% CI: 0.38–6.22) higher with the combination linagliptin/metformin than with the placebo (p = 0.03). Fasting plasma glucose (FPG) decreased more with metformin monotherapy −0.3 mmol/L (95%CI: −0.48; 0.12, p = 0.0009) and with the combination metformin/linagliptin −0.2 mmol/L (95% CI: −0.37; −0.03) than with the placebo (p = 0.0219). Body weight (BW) decreased by −2.0 kg (95% CI: −5.65; −1.65, p = 0.0006) with metformin monotherapy, and by −1.9 kg (95% CI: −3.02; −0.97) with the combination metformin/linagliptin as compared to the placebo (p = 0.0002). Conclusions: in people with prediabetes, a 1 year treatment with metformin and linagliptin, combined or in monotherapy, was associated with a lower risk of SFPN, and with a lower decrease in eGFR, than treatment with placebo.
