Opis:
Pinus densiflora f. multicaulis is a rare and unusual form of genus Pinus. It has excellent ornamen- tal values due to many trunks from its root collar, and produces female, male, and bisexual strobili on the same tree. However, there is limited study whether the bisexual strobili are functional, mature lateral cones produce filled seeds, and the seeds from the mature lateral cones germinate and grow as well as those from mature apical cones. The structure of apical female, and lateral male and bisexual strobili were analyzed in an open-pollination-progeny population. The strobili were photographed to obtain external, cross-section, and radial-section images using a 45× stereoscopic microscope. Radial sections of strobili were imaged using scanning electron microscopy. Characteristics of apical and lateral cones and seeds were surveyed by cone analysis and germination test. P. densiflora f. multicaulis developed typical female strobili apically, and ordinary male and bisexual strobili laterally. Additionally, female strobili developed laterally whereas the male strobili were normally located. The mature lateral female strobili had the same structure as the apical female. In the mature bisexual strobili, the proportion of male and female tissue was unequal. The cones developed from lateral female strobili showed highly significant differences in the length, width, and weight, being shorter (32.7%), narrower (26.9%), and lighter (59.8%) than those from apical female strobili. Both types produced filled seeds and seedlings, and well significant positive correlations were found among characteristics of seeds from apical and lateral female strobili. The initial seed germination rate of the seeds from apical female strobili was higher than that of seeds from lateral female strobili, but the difference decreased over time. The viability and spatial distribution of the female and male tissue of bisporangiate cones, and their frequent occurrence suggests a common mechanism for the production of bisporangiate structures in seed plants.

Opis:
This study investigated the effect of strut thickness on the room and high temperature compressive properties of block-type Ni-Cr-Al powder porous metals with ~3000 μm pore size manufactured using a new powder process. Two block-type Ni-Cr-Al porous metals with different strut thicknesses were manufactured. The strut thicknesses of two block foams were 340 μm (A) and 383 μm (B), respectively. Room temperature, 500°C, 650°C and 800°C compressive tests were performed. The compressive results identified typical elastic, plateau and densification regions of foam material in all temperature conditions. Regardless of the strut thickness, compressive strength (maximum peak stress) decreased as deformation temperature increased. In all deformation temperature ranges, the compressive strength measured higher in the porous metal with greater strut thickness (B). The high temperature deformation behavior of powder porous metal was confirmed to be affected by the structural factor and microstructural factor of the porous metal. With the findings described above, this study also discussed the high temperature deformation mechanism of the Ni-Cr-Al metal foam based on fracture surfaces after the high temperature compressions.

Opis:
Typical tripod foundations are designed using deterministic computational models according to relevant standards and codes. However, for more cost-safety balanced design, uncertainties in significant parameters should be considered in preliminary design to ensure meeting a specific probabilistic safety target in the context of the complex configuration of a tripod structure. In this article, uncertainties associated with design parameters and modelling errors are considered using Monte Carlo simulations, in order to determine the key structural design parameters, and to determine the optimal balance between design parameters and design requirements. A Spearman rank-order correlation based analysis is carried out to understand the effects of design variables on maximum deformation, total weight, and natural frequency, and to have insight about important design parameters for improvement of a preliminary design. It is found that the tower diameter has the most significant effect on the maximum displacement on the hub as validated through engineering case studies. In addition, a statistical framework, which identifies influential design parameters and provides reliability evaluation, is proposed for the structural design of a tripod OWT system. The design cases considered in this study indicate that a simple deterministic design check cannot guarantee the required reliability level of the structure, and the cost-safety balance can be achieved by a reliability analysis with the consideration of the uncertainties in the structure.

Opis:
The genus Populus is one of the important tree species in Korean peninsula and many other coun- tries in the world. It represents the model species of forest genomics because it grows fast and reproduces rapidly. In this reason, their genetic characteristics have been well studied and the whole genome has been sequenced completely in some species. However, cytogenetic study of the genus Populus has been limited. In the present study, karyotypes of Korean aspen (P. tremula var. davidiana), Silver poplar (P. alba) and their two hybrids, Suwon aspen (P. tremula var. glandulosa) and Hyun aspen (P. alba × P. tremula var. glandulsa) were analyzed by means of the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Root samples were collected from mature trees in the demonstration forest, located at Suwon, Kyonggi province in South Korea. The fresh root cells were examined by DAPI (4’,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) staining and FISH using 45S rDNA and 5S rDNA probes. As the results, the chromosome compositions of all species were the same as 2n = 38. The karyotype formulas of Korean aspen, Silver poplar, Suwon aspen and Hyun aspen were 28m + 6sm + 4st (2sat), 26m + 10sm (2sat) + 2st, 26m + 12sm (2sat) and 28m + 10sm (2sat), respectively. The four species had one pair of 45S rDNA site and one pair of 5S rDNA site in common with FISH karyotypes. The similarity of FISH karyotypes among four species indicated close genetic relationship and coexistence of their interspecific hybrids. This research will provide genetic information on cytogenetic research of Populus and genetic mapping that can be applied to the breeding program of Populus in the near future.

Opis:
Purpose: of this paper is to predict the hardness of cold rolled exhausts valve spindle fabricated of Nimonic 80A via axisymmetric finite element analysis, compression testing, and hardness inspection. Design/methodology/approach: The stress-strain relationship of Nimonic 80A was obtained via compression testing with deformation ratios of 10%, 20%, and 30%. Hardness changes caused by the strain hardening effect were measured in cut specimens in both the axial and circumferential directions following compression testing. The effective strain at the measurement position was calculated via finite element analysis. The regression equation for hardness changes caused by work hardening was derived from analysed strain and inspected hardness. The cold-rolling deformation of an exhaust valve spindle was analysed using axisymmetric finite element analysis. Findings: The stress-strain relationship calculated from compression testing was well expressed using the Holloman equation and the strain-hardness relationship by strain hardening was successfully regressed using the shifted power law model for Nimonic 80A, Nickel-Chromium based super alloy. Research limitations/implications: This research focused hardness prediction of spindle after ring rolling operation for generating beneficial compressive surface residual stresses for enhancing fatigue life. Further research to quantify compressive residual stress after rolling shall be followed to increase fatigue life. Practical implications: The cold rolling process is a typical incremental forming method and should be analysed under three-dimensional conditions. However, it takes lots of time to solve incremental forming analysis. To predict hardness distribution after rolling in the manufacturing field, FE analysis was performed under two-dimensional axisymmetric conditions based on the assumption of no friction generated by the rolling tool. The deformed shapes and hardness distribution from the inspection quality standard and two-dimensional FE analysis showed very similar results. Simplified finite element analysis method for ring rolling process for local area could be very effective method in the industrial field. Originality/value: The stress-strain relationship and the hardness and strain relationship were derived by compression test and hardness measurement for compressed specimen for Nimonic 80A, Nickel-Chromium based super alloy. And simplified finite element analysis method was suggested to predict deformed shape and hardness distribution of locally cold rolled region and achieved similar result between FE analysis result and Quality standard. Suggested method would be very effective method to engine spindle manufacture to predict hardness of different size of product.

Opis:
Used cladding hulls from pressurized water reactor (PWR) are characterized to provide useful information for the treatment and disposal of cladding hull wastes. The radioactivity and the mass of gamma emitting nuclides increases with an increase in the fuel burn-up and their removal ratios are found to be more than 99 wt.% except Co-60 and Cs-137. In the result of measuring the concentrations of U and Pu included in the cladding hull wastes, most of the residues are remained on the surface and the removal ratio of U and Pu are revealed to be over 99.98 wt.% for the fuel burn-up of 35,000 MWd/tU. An electron probe micro-analyzer (EPMA) line scanning shows that radioactive fission products are penetrated into the Zr oxide layer, which is proportional to the fuel burn-up. The oxidative decladding process exhibits more efficient removal ratio of radionuclides.

Opis:
We present a precise measurement of double-polarization asymmetries in the $^{3}\vec{He} \left ( \vec{e}, {e}'d \right )$ reaction. This particular process is a uniquely sensitive probe of hadron dynamics in $^{3}He$ and the structure of the underlying electromagnetic currents. The measurements have been performed in and around quasielastic kinematics at $Q^{2}=0.25(GeV/c)^{2}$ for missing momenta up to 270  MeV/c. The asymmetries are in fair agreement with the state-of-the-art calculations in terms of their functional dependencies on $p_{m}$ and $\omega$ , but are systematically offset. Beyond the region of the quasielastic peak, the discrepancies become even more pronounced. Thus, our measurements have been able to reveal deficiencies in the most sophisticated calculations of the three-body nuclear system, and indicate that further refinement in the treatment of their two-and/or three-body dynamics is required.
