Opis:
Introduction: Proximal femoral fractures are the major cause of hospitalization due to an injury among advanced age patients. Purpose: To analyse causes of femoral neck fractures. Materials and methods: The research material included medical documentation of 203 patients with femoral neck fractures. A research method employed in this study was an analysis of the documentation. A statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test for independence. Results: The majority of women and men sustained an injury at home or on the way (62.5% and 46.2% respectively). Patients who had an injury at work were largely men. Most injuries were related to a disease. It has been observed that women considerably more often than men mentioned slipping as the cause of an injury (21.3% and 6.9% respectively). Men, on the other hand, more often than women incurred injuries as a result of falls (19.4% and 9. 5% respectively). The structure of an injury was similar irrespective of whether patients were diagnosed as having such diseases as diabetes, cataract and osteoporosis or not. Conclusions: There is a relationship between gender and the circumstances of an injury. Women more often sustain an injury at home, and men – at work. The circumstances and causes of injuries are not significantly related to diseases such as diabetes, cataract and osteoporosis.

Opis:
It is expected that during 1980 – 2020 the population of older people worldwide will increase by 240%. The objective of the study was to review strategies undertaken in various countries in association with the ageing of society. This analysis may be used for the selection of actions, which are necessary for the construction and performance of social and health policy in Poland. A method of choice was an analysis of academic literature. The WHO specified health promotion as the most important goal of the policy for seniors. Individual countries adopt many varied strategies of action. In Poland, the introduction of nursing insurance and development of geriatric medicine are primarily proposed. In Japan, the emphasis is placed on enabling the elderly the longest occupational activity possible, and the development of primary health care. For the Swedish, the priority is guaranteed support for family caregivers, while in the United States - an increase in the accessibility of environmental care. There are many strategies developed on an international forum whose purpose is to provide care for the growing number of seniors. The strategies adopted by individual countries are much varied. The basic postulates are a development of geriatric medicine and integration of the systems of health services and social security. The literature lacks reports on the effectiveness of the implemented strategies.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. For many years, Europe has been struggling with the problem of an aging society. It is obvious that everyone would like to live longer while retaining good psycho-physical health and social activity. This, however, is influenced by many factors, such as health, which may be a form of limitation in everyday life or in performing social roles in accordance with the norms. Objective. The aim of the study was to analyze the use of scales for functional assessment of basic and complex daily living activities in individuals aged 80+ in various EU countries. Materials and method. Potentially essential articles were obtained through review and analysis of the PUBMED (MEDLINE) database by entering the following keywords: functional activities of daily living, ADL, IADL, complex activities of daily living, basic activities of daily living. Article selection was based on the following inclusion criteria set by the authors and the appointed Advisory Board. Results. Assessment of independence and fitness of elderly persons in the area of basic and complex activities of daily living provides information on the quality of life of senior individuals. Analysis of research data used for comparing functional independence of senior persons on the basis of ADL and IADL scales is difficult due to the discrepancies, which may be confusing for researchers studying this area. Conclusions. The use of different methodologies for assessing functional fitness of elderly individuals makes it difficult to interpret, compare and practically apply the outcomes. Standardization of research methods used for assessment of basic and complex daily living activities in 80+ persons would enable comparing the obtained data in an interdisciplinary perspective.

Opis:
Health behaviours are actions taken by a person in the field of health. Risky behaviours are those that pose a threat to health. Bioelements are essential for the proper functioning of every organism. Their trace amounts are necessary for life and health. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between health behaviours and the levels of bioelements in the blood serum of secondary school students. This survey-based study was carried out on a sample of 376 secondary school students aged 13-16 years. It was performed using the HBSC questionnaire (Health Behaviour In School-aged Children: A WHO Collaborative Cross-national Study). Next, cubital vein blood was collected for laboratory tests, and the levels of bioelements (Mg, Ca, Cu, Fe, Zn) in blood serum were determined. The analysis of the research material did not demonstrate substantial differences in the mean serum levels of Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, Fe between smokers and non-smokers, alcohol consumers and non-consumers, drug users and non-users. There were no statistically significant correlations between the levels of bioelements and the frequency of drinking beer and vodka (p>0.05). A statistically significant correlation was observed between Cu levels and drinking wine (p≤0.05). Subjects showing aggressive behaviours (getting into scuffles) had lower Mg and Zn levels than other secondary school students. There were weak but statistically significant correlations between Cu levels and the frequency of wine consumption, and between serum Zn levels and smoking marijuana among the subjects.

Opis:
Introduction. Schizophrenic patients present cognitive dysfunctions which are regarded to be one of endophenotypical markers predisposing to schizophrenia. Currently, schizophrenia can be treated as a neurodegenerative and neurodeveloping disease with genetic background. Objective. Assessment of the possible positive effect of neuropsychological rehabilitation in schizophrenia, in patients presenting cognitive dysfunctions. An additional aim was to verify the hypothesis that some genetic polymorphisms can be a prognostic factor for success in neuropsychological rehabilitation. Material and methods. 41 participants and 40 control subjects were randomly selected. Both groups had the diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia. Cognitive functions were checked with the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, Trail Making Test, and Stroop Test at the beginning and end of the experiment. In the research group, each patient trained with the rehabilitation programme RehaCom, whereas the control group did not receive such training. Genes COMT rs4680 and BDNF rs6265 were analysed in the genetic part of study. Results. RehaCom procedures appear to be useful in the neuropsychological rehabilitation of cognitive dysfunctions in patients diagnosed with schizophrenia. The research group showed a moderate improvement in the training programmes. Analysis of parameters obtained in the neuropsychological tests showed a slight improvement in both groups. At the present time, analysis of the polymorphisms of genes cannot be treated as a prognostic factor for the success of neuropsychological rehabilitation because statistical analyses showed few dependences with little statistical significance. Conclusions. Cognitive rehabilitation produces moderate improvement in cognitive functioning.

Opis:
Introduction and objective: The developing brain of a child is extremely prone to damage resulting from exposure to harmful environmental factors, e.g. heavy metals. Intoxication of children’s organisms with lead and cadmium affects their intellectual development. Even a relatively small amount of this metal in children’s blood can lead to developmental dysfunctions. The aim of this study was to analyse the correlation between blood lead and cadmium levels in children with behaviour disorders and their functioning in the home. Material and methods: This survey-based study was conducted among 78 families with children diagnosed as having behaviour disorders. It was performed using the ADHD-Rating Scale-IV. To determine lead and cadmium levels the laboratory procedure was based on Stoppler and Brandt’s method. Results: The mean blood lead level was 19.71 μg/l and the mean blood cadmium level was 0.215μg/l. Higher blood lead levels in children correlates positively with incidences of hyperactive and impulsive behaviour in the home, as assessed by parents (p=0.048). Statistically significant effects of cadmium on children’s behaviour were not noticed. Conclusions: The effect of lead on the developing organism of a child has such behavioural consequences as attention disorders, hyperactivity and impulsive behaviour which, in turn, may interfere with children’s functioning in the home. A negative effect of cadmium on the functioning of children with behaviour disorders in the home was not proved.
