Opis:
The Qucs Equation-Defined Device was introduce roughly ten years ago as a versatile behavioural simulation component for modelling the non-linear static and dynamic properties of passive components, semiconductor devices and IC macromodels. Today, this component has become an established element for building experimental device simulation models. It’s inherent interactive properties make it ideal for device and circuit modelling via Qucs schematics. Moreover, Equation-Defined Devices often promote a clearer understanding of the factors involved in the construction of complex compact semiconductor simulation models. This paper is concerned with recent advances in Qucs-S/Ngspice/XSPICE modelling capabilities that improve model construction and simulation run time performance of Equation-Defined Devices using XSPICE model syntheses. To illustrate the new Qucs-S modelling techniques an XSPICE version of the EPFL EKV v2.6 long channel transistor model together with other illustrative examples are described and their performance simulated with Qucs-S and Ngspice.

Opis:
A high percentage of analogue integrated circuit designs use voltage domain signal processing techniques. Given the fact that integrated circuit current conveyors are high bandwidth current processing devices, often with superior RF performance compared to comparable voltage domain devices, it is surprising that the number of current mode integrated circuits available, as standard of-the-shelf industrial items, is so small. This paper introduces equation-defined device and Verilog-A synthesis approaches to the macromodelling of current conveyor integrated circuits. To illustrate the proposed modelling techniques the properties of a number of modular behavioural level current conveyor macromodel cells are described and their performance compared. The material presented is intended for analogue device modellers and circuit designers who wish to simulate large signal current domain integrated circuit designs. It also demonstrates how synthesized Verilog-A modules can be derived from equation-defined device and conventional subcircuits to form functional, computationally efficient current conveyor macromodels. To illustrate the application of behavioural current conveyor macromodels the design of a six cell CCII+ instrumentation amplifier is introduced and its performance discussed.

This paper is concerned with the development and evaluation of a number of modeling techniques which improve Qucs Harmonic Balance simulation performance of RF compact device models. Although Qucs supports conventional SPICE semiconductor device models, whose static current/voltage and dynamic charge characteristics exhibit second and higher order derivatives may not be continuous, there is no guarantee that these will function without Harmonic Balance simulation convergence problems. The same comment also applies to a number of legacy compact semiconductor device models. The modeling of semiconductor devices centered on non-linear Equation-Defined Devices and blocks of Verilog-A code, combined with linear components, is introduced. These form a class of compact macromodel that has improved Harmonic Balance simulation performance. To illustrate the presented modeling techniques RF diode, BJT and MESFET macromodels are described and their Harmonic Balance performance simulated with Qucs and Xyce©.

Purpose. To develop the method for increasing the efficiency of the equipment’s maintenance and repair system, ensuring necessary level of operational reliability of the equipment, safety and reliability of the electric equipment with minimal expenses on operation. Relevance. Aging of the power equipment in railway power supply systems sharply raised a need for assessment of its states and degree of risk for operation outside rated service life. In critical conditions of technological processes and operational modes of the railways it is necessary to increase the equipment’s operational reliability. The scheduled maintenance and repair system whose main technical and economic criterion is the minimum of equipment’s downtimes on the basis of a rigid regulation of repair cycles, in the conditions of market regulations in the field of repair in many cases does not provide the optimal decisions due to insufficient financing. The solution of this problem is possible by improvement of the maintenance and repair system. Under these conditions the main direction for supporting the operational reliability of power electric equipment on TS is a development of the modern methods based on individual supervision over real changes of technical condition of power equipment. Scientific novelty. In this article the authors proposed an integrated approach, on the basis of which can be developed the effective maintenance and repair system for traction power supply systems. Proposed approach allowed to react quickly to changes of service conditions on traction substations, to control the technical condition of power electric equipment under the conditions of uncertainty, to establish interrelation between quality of service and operational reliability of the equipment, to choose a service strategy on traction substations. Practical importance. The validity of the developed method was confirmed by the results of calculations and practically by choosing the optimal maintenance's option for transformer TDTN-25000/150-70 U1 (ТДТН-25000/150-70 У1) on traction power supply substation.

This article is devoted to the study of water and sediment pollution in the channel of the Neva delta. Spectrophotometry was used to determine the concentration of pollutants in water. In the chemical analysis of the precipitate, atomic absorption spectroscopy and infrared spectroscopy were used. Analysis of the hydrochemical composition and sediment of the Smolenka River showed high concentrations of heavy metals and petroleum products. At the same time, the hydrochemical composition of the Smolenka River is highly unstable, but the concentration of oil products and lead in the sediments indicates the presence of local pollution sources. Based on our findings, we are guided by the restoration of the aquatic environment.

Purpose. To develop the fuzzy model of distribution of excess regenerative energy in traction and external power supply systems allowing to exercise effective operation of the power equipment. Relevance. For effective distribution of excess regenerative energy in systems of electric transport, as well as for systems equipped with stationary stores of energy and inverting traction substations with regulators of output voltage it is necessary to solve a number of the problems with high degree of uncertainty demanding taking into account a set of random factors such as the modes of power lines and traction loadings. These factors have to be considered in operation for choosing the rational modes of energy stores, inverters and regulators of voltage on buses of substations to provide the rational conditions for energy regeneration on electric transport. Scientific novelty. The control system of energy storage devices, inverters and traction substation output voltage regulators, designed on the basis of fuzzy logic, can provide the necessary conditions for the regeneration on electric transport on sections with a shortage of traction power consumption and allows to optimize the distribution of excess braking energy of transport vehicles. It is achieved by determining the rational relationship between the components of the excess current of regeneration in real time, which can ensure a minimum of power losses of regenerative energy in traction and external power supply systems. Practical importance. The use of the developed approach is effective under the conditions of incomplete information received by measurement systems and on the basis of additional studies it can allow to minimize rated capacity of stores, inverters and traction substation output voltage regulators that could reduce the costs of modernization of existing sections and electrification of new electric transport systems.

Purpose. Monitoring of current state of quantitative indices of regenerative energy in the suburban movement, the analysis of the factors influencing its volumes and improvement the principles of the train regenerative energy accounting on the basis of it. Relevance. Development of effective measures of increase the regeneration efficiency of the electric power in system of electric traction demands comprehensive completeness of information on quantitative indices of regeneration energy volumes at all possible levels of its analysis, in particular on the corresponding sections of RS movement that will allow to establish the influence on the level of regeneration of various factors, such as parameters of traction power supply and the organization of train service. As the existing system of the regenerative energy accounting does not allow to consider the specified factors, development of the principles for increasing the efficiency of the analysis of volumes of return energy to a contact line during regenerative braking on DC rolling stock is the actual direction of researches. Collective monitoring of regeneration energy volumes by specialists of locomotive service, power supply and traffic operating departments will be essentially new approach to definition of real factors and taking effective decisions for increasing of using of regenerative energy. Scientific novelty. It’s offered to consider the influence on quantitative indices of regenerative energy the parameters of traction power supply and the organization (sizes) of traffic service on sections. Practical importance. Increasing the efficiency of the regeneration energy accounting is an important element in drawing up the balance of energy for electric traction system, development of the effective methods for improvement of the conditions of regeneration in it and in estimation of its power indicators in general.

Opis:
The research objective is to increase the efficiency of export railway transportation of grain freights in Ukraine by the introduction of consignor routing, a concentration of loading of grain on junction elevators and the organization of the movement of grain routes according to the schedule. According to the researchers in USA and EU, one of the effective directions for decreasing the expenses in a logistic chain of grain delivery to ports is consignor routing of railway transportation. Consignor routing of transportations of grain freights provides a concentration of their loading at junctions. The choice of junctions is proposed to be carried out on the basis of methods of the cluster analysis. For formation of regions for a concentration of grain loading the theory of sets and multicriteria optimization are used. As a result, on the basis of the modified simplex method are chosen 24 regions of possible concentration of grain loading that cover 70 stations on Ukrainian railways providing 7,5 million t consignor routing for grain in a year with minimal additional expenses. The assessment of the efficiency of railway transportation routing of grain freights is calculated with use of the developed simulation model. Researches showed that application of consignor routing allows to reduce a turn-round cycle for grain wagon in a logistic chain of deliveries up to 27%, and application of the schedule for consignor routes allows to reduce a turn-round cycle up to 62%, in comparison with transportation by car loading. Thus, as showed the calculations executed for one of the directions of grain transportation for export, the necessary operation park of grain-carrier wagons is reduced twice, thereby allowing to cut logistic expenses on a delivery of the Ukrainian grain through seaports to the world markets.

Controversies, sometimes bitter controversies, are an inherent element of international relations. Conflicting interests, different values, overlapping spheres of influences… all this make dispute settlement mechanisms crucial elements of international system. Searching for cooperation mechanisms that may help in overcoming existing controversies in Asia is the main topic of this monograph. The monograph is based on the case studies in which authors analyse disagreements as well as collaborations between different actors in Asia. They are chosen different point of views that might be roughly divided into two groups. The first set of authors tries to look at regional or even internal problems that have international impact. The second group gives an outlook on the controversies linked to rising global presence of Asian countries, in particular China.

Current development of the maritime transportation system, namely fleet and ports specialization, growth of vessel sizes, rationalization of routs, trade regionalization etc., has made many traditional approaches and calculation techniques practiced for many long years in port design procedures to be inadequate and insufficient. A generally acknowledged tool for this task today is the simulation technique. In the same time, modern object oriented simulation approach provides usually only ad hoc solution for a project. It lacks the generality that was the main and natural feature of its traditional analytical predecessors. Very high time and labor consumption of simulation comes to a conflict with a very narrow scope of the resulting model’s application domain. This paper describes a new approach used to create a simulation tool for the port designers and planners combining the universality and generality of the analytical (so called “static”) methods with the efficiency and accuracy of the object-oriented simulation. The concept represented in the paper was implemented in the software product, which enabled to conduct experiments that proved the validity and adequacy of the model. The simulation tool was used in several sea port design project and now is a common instrument of several leading port design and consulting company in Russian Federation.

Opis:
The terminology and conceptual apparatus of modern logistics as a scientific discipline is far from being shaped. Researches and developers of legislative and norm-setting documents are obliged to use their own or barrowed terminology, in both case not shared ubiquitously. Consequently, the interpretations even of basic concepts differ significantly. In particular, there exists an academic and practical point of view that refuse the right for existence of the term “transportation logistics”. This clause is explained by the proclaimed omnipresence and universality of logistics, which has in its operational glossary the term “transportation”, treated as a local, subordinated and thus secondary function. This paper tries to set a decisive rule to distinguish between general logistics and transportation logistics, arguing that these two disciplines are well separated by the objects and methodology, knowledge and activities. In transportation logistics defined this way the authors examine two principal components of the transportation processes, storage (warehousing) and movement (shipping). This consideration lead to conclusions that the classical mathematical toolkit is not fitted for the design and management of modern global supply chains.

This work covers the pollution of the atmosphere during the work of the Mikhailovsky Mining and Refining Facility which is located within 100 km from the city of Kursk, in the city of Zheleznogorsk. Over the past few years in the whole world, the anthropogenic activity, connected mainly with the locations of mineral production and those of mineral treatment and processing, has become increasingly dangerous for the natural environment. Resource development in open pits causes the formation of inorganic dust. The dust is released into the atmosphere at all stages of the enterprise’s technical process. The principal sources generating inorganic dust during open mining of iron deposits include: blasting operations in an open pit, the work of transfer points, the enrichment process at a factory, pellet firing as well as dusting from the surfaces of stock dumps and dry tailings beaches.

Opis:
The simulation as a tool for the design of port and terminals has emerged as an answer for the demand to enhance the quality and reliability of the project results. Very high costs of the project solution implementation and practically total lack of liquidity of transport infrastructure objects always induced the immense commercial risks in the terminal business. Lately these risks have multiplied significantly due to rapid changes on the global and regional markets of transport services. Today, many experts come to see this volatility as an indicator of the next phase in development of the global trade system and the derivative cargo transportation system, specifically the state of temporal saturation. The shift of the global goods volumes from quick and steady growth to relatively small fluctuations around constant values causes quick oscillations in re-distribution of demand over the oversized supply. This new business and economic environment seriously affected the paradigm of transport terminal design and development techniques. The new operational environment of terminals put a request for the designers to arrange the results not in terms of “point”, but in terms of “functions”. Eventually it resulted in development of the modern object-oriented model approach. The wide spread of this approach witnesses the objective demand for this discipline, while in many aspects it remains in the intuitive (pre-paradigmal) phase of its development. The main reason for it is in the problem definition itself, which usually is formulated as the simulation of a given terminal. At the same time, the task is to assess the operational characteristics of the terminal engaged in processing of a given combination of cargo flows. Consequently, it is not the terminal that should be simulated, but the processes of cargo flows handling performed by this terminal under investigation. Another problem that restricts the practical spread of simulation is in the model adequacy. A model which adequacy is not proved has no gnoseological value at all. The paper describes the approach aimed at development of the models with the features discussed above.

Opis:
Сarbon isotopic composition of Late Jurassic sediments displays a trend of 13 C depletion in the World ocean. Meanwhile, depending on local paleogeographical conditions, δ 13 C curves for different palaeoprovinces differ in inclinations and absolute values (Nunn & Price 2010). That is why a separate δ 13 C curve needs to be developed for every specific region. After such development, the inverse problem – correlation of the sedimentary complex by comparing δ 13 C parameters – can be solved. A comparison of δ 13 C values in contemporaneous sediments can be also used as an instrument for testing paleogeographical and paleoecological models. Previous δ 13 C data for the Upper Jurassic sediments of the Tethys region were obtained for its Western passive margin and Central Atlantics (Padden et al. 2002, Coimbra et al. 2009). These data have been acquired from precisely dated hemipelagic sediments containing index fauna and epioceanic Ammonitico-Rosso facies. In the current study we present δ 13 C variations in carbonate platform sediments from the backarc basin of the Northern Tethys (N20° to N40°) (Meijers et al. 2010) mostly based on Sr-chemostratigraphic correlation and dating of carbonate complexes. We studied Sr, C and O isotopic composition of the Upper Jurassic carbonate complexes of the Crimean Mountains. These complexes were formed under different conditions: Kimmeridgian and Early Tithonian sediments were deposited in shallow-water carbonate platform settings. In most cases they lack index fossils and their age is defined by Sr-chemostratigraphy (Rudko et al. 2014); Late Tithonian to Early Berriasian sediments were sampled from a carbonate platform reef facies, slope and toe of slope carbonate megabreccias. Reef and breccias deposits were dated using Sr-chemostratigraphy, and confirmed by calpionellide biostratigraphy. In the absence of well preserved faunal remnants in the studied sections, limestone samples with the best preservation of primary sedimentary textures were collected for Sr isotopic–geochemical studies. Samples with large calcite veins or abundant epigenetic sparite were excluded from this research. Limestone samples for reconstructing the 87 Sr/ 86 Sr isotopic parameters of depositional environments were selected using geochemical criteria (Mn/Sr < 0.2, Fe/Sr < 1.6, Mg/Ca < 0.024; δ 18 О > −1.5‰) and subjected to preliminary treatment in a 1 N ammonium acetate solution. From more then 100 analyzed samples only 13 best preserved were used to provide correlation between sections and the age of strata. Most of samples used to determine C isotopic composition are represented by micritic limestones with low content of sparry cements and fragments of primary aragonitic grains. The content of insoluble impurities in limestones does not exceed 9%. All selected samples display no correlation between the amount of siliciclastic impurities, δ 13 C and δ 18 О values. δ 13 C values in the measured samples vary between +1 and 3.5‰, δ 18 О: from −2.9‰ to +1,3‰. C – isotopic composition in 44 samples was considered to be diagenetically unaffected and they were selected to provide δ 13 C curve. According to the results of comparison of stable isotope composition with microfacies of samples, δ 13 C values are not environment-dependent in contrast to δ 18 О, which are slightly enriched in 18 O in offshore and slope facies. The measured values of δ 13 С are falling from an average 3.2‰ in Late Kimmeridgian through 2.6‰ in Early Tithonian to 1.7‰ in Late Tithonian – Early Berriasian. This corresponds to the global δ 13 С trend in Upper Jurassic sediments (Nunn & Price 2010). Among other Kimmeridgian – Berriasian carbonates the Northern Tethys carbonate platform deposits are 0.5–1‰ higher than δ 13 С from the Western Tethys (Coimbra et al. 2009). The following factors (or their combinations) may explain observed 13 C-enriched isotopic composition of the Northern Tethyan backarc basin deposits: 1. increased amount of shallow-water allochems and cements in the sediments of carbonate platform and its aprons, compared to hemipelagites of Western Tethyan margin; 2. increased bioproductivity of photosynthetic organisms – cyanobacteria and green algae that played an important role in the studied Upper Jurassic carbonate platform deposits (Krajewski 2010, Piskunov et al. 2012, Bucur et al. 2014), removed large quantity of light carbon from water, leading to 13 C enrichment of bicarbonate. It is interesting to note that volcanic activity on Tethyan active margin seems not to have an impact on δ 13 С values of the studied sediments.

Opis:
The research is devoted to assessing the negative impact of the amber-succinite deposit in the Kaliningrad region as one of the sources of complex pollution of the Baltic Sea waters. The Baltic Sea is one of the most polluted water bodies in Europe today. There are many natural and anthropogenic factors that cause this ecological situation. Industry is one of the significant contributors to the pollution of the waters of the Baltic Sea. The industrial wastewater discharged into the Baltic Sea often does not comply with the state ecological standards. The wastewater disposal system modernization by creating a recycled water supply is one of the most effective ways to reduce the negative impact of industrial wastewater on the Baltic Sea ecosystem nowadays. This technological solution allows to significantly reduce or to completely prevent the discharge of wastewater into the Baltic Sea.

Opis:
Some agrophysical properties with their relation to soil erosion caused by water flow are discussed. The paper presents an improved equation of the bottom-scouring velocity which is used as a measure of erosion-preventive stability. The main components of the equation are water stability of soil structure and soil cohesion, determined by a new water-jet method.
W pracy omówiono niektóre agrofizyczne właściwości gleby w aspekcie zjawisk erozji wodnej, głównie spływu powierzchniowego. Jako miarę stabilności przeciwerozyjnej gleby zastosowano prędkość ścierania dna żłobiny, tj. prędkość krytyczną, rozpoczynającą stałe przemieszczanie cząstek w żłobinie. Autorzy przedstawili ulepszone równanie opisujące tę wielkość. Główne elementy równania stanowią: współczynnik wodoodporności struktury gleby i współczynnik kohezji gleby, wyznaczony według nowej metody polegającej na pomiarze strumienia wody (water jet).

Opis:
The container yard is the key element of any modern container terminal. The huge amount of boxes dwelling on the operational areas of the terminals could occupy a lot of space, since one-time storage capacity of the container mega terminal handling over one million TEUs annually is something around 20 000 TEUs. The ecological pressure imposed on modern container terminal does not permit to allocate for this storage large land areas, thus forcing the box stacks grow high. The selection of the individual boxes becomes a complex and time-consuming procedure, demanding a lot of technological resources and deteriorating the service quality. The predicted combinatorial growth of redundant moves needed to clear the access to the individual container is aggravated by the well-known and widely discussed ‘sinking effect’, when containers arrived earlier are gradually covered by the ones arriving afterwards. While the random selection could be adequately assessed by combinatorial methods, the ‘sinking effect’ allows neither intuitive consideration, nor any traditional mathematical means. The only practical way to treat this problem today is in simulation, but the simulation itself causes yet another problem: the problem of model adequacy. This study deals with one possible approach to the problem designated to prove its validity and adequacy, without which the simulation has naught gnoseological value.

New shallow acceptor magnetoabsorption lines in THz range have been discovered under bandgap photoexcitation in strained Ge/GeSi multiple-quantum-well heterostructures. It is shown, both theoretically and experimentally, that the resonant absorption results from the photoionization of A$\text{}^{+}$-centers and from 1s → 2p$\text{}_{+}$-type transitions from the ground state of the barrier-situated A$\text{}^{0}$-centers into excited states in the 1st and 2nd electronic subbands. The shallowest discovered ground acceptor states (E$\text{}_{B}$≤0.5 meV) are attributed to the "barrier-spaced" acceptors (a hole bound with an acceptor ion in the neighboring Ge quantum well).

Opis:
Very cold neutrons (VCN) scattering method was used to study the morphology of polyolefine based nanocomposites. The nanocomposites were prepared by the melt mixing method. The special surface active additions and the fillers surface modification were used to improve the polymer-filler compatibility. The multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), the calcium carbonate (CC) submicron particles and the layered natural mineral montmorillonite (MMT) nanoparticles were used as the fillers. The fractal structural model was used to describe the VCN scattering on the nanofillers agglomerates. It was shown by VCN scattering that the volume part of isolated MWCNTs in polypropylene (PP) based composites decreases with the increase of the filler loading, the density of MWCNT packing in agglomerates increases with the total volume nanotube concentration and decreases with the nanotube surface modification. It was revealed that the isolated CC particles are dominated in the CC/PP samples with low CC (5 vol.%) loading. It was shown that practically full MMT exfoliation within polyethylene (PE) matrix can be achieved by both polymerization exfoliation method and by melt mixing compounding with using special polar polymer additions.

Opis:
Resistivity, Hall and Seebeck effects have been studied on single crystals of $Ca_{1-x}Eu_{x}B_{6}$ (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) at temperatures 2-300 K and in magnetic fields up to 8 T. An insulating ground state is found to be limited by narrow range of Eu doping 0.6 ≤ x ≤ 0.8. This region is characterized by an enhanced colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), which reaches values of ρ(0)/ρ(7T) > $10^{6}$ for x = 0.63 at T < 10 K. Decreasing of Eu content in $Ca_{1-x}Eu_{x}B_{6}$ below x* ≈ 0.6 restores the metallic ground state with moderate resistivity (ρ ~ 1 ÷ 5 mΩ·cm) and CMR amplitude (ρ(0)/ρ(7T) < 7). The second metal-insulator transition (MIT) in $Ca_{1-x}Eu_{x}B_{6}$ is observed beyond the whole conductivity region found earlier in the narrow range of Eu doping (0.7 ≤ x ≤ 0.8). The correlation between the enhanced CMR amplitude, the onset of positive diffusive thermopower and the elevation of anomalous Hall effect, determined for Eu content 0.6 ≤ x ≤ 0.85, favors the idea that a smooth change of band structure is the main factor governing the reentrant MIT in $Ca_{1-x}Eu_{x}B_{6}$.

Opis:
Development of a method for calculating the optimal mode of conducting a train in terms of energy saving meet the safety requirements and schedules. The method of calculation must solve the assigned tasks without significant time spent on the calculation. To implement this method of calculation was used a simplified model of the train as a controlled system. The existing mathematical and algorithmic methods for solving isoperimetric problems of finding the optimal solution in the presence of restrictions on resources were the information base for methodology development. Scientific works of domestic and foreign scientists, professional periodicals, materials of scientific and practical conferences, methodical and normative materials, currently in force on Ukrainian Railways. The results of these studies were used to create simulators on the basis of computer technology for the training of locomotive drivers. The scientific novelty of the proposed calculation method consists in applying the simplified calculations of the status of the train as a controlled system, without the use of differential equations of motion that allows to significantly increase the speed of the calculations. This, in turn, will solve the problems of finding optimal control in real time, taking into account changing conditions during the movement of the train. The practical significance of the obtained results is the use of such a calculation method that does not require significant time for its implementation and can be used as a subsystem of the on-board train control system capable of performing calculations taking into account changes in the current train situation.

Opis:
Transport, magnetic and thermal properties of substitutional solid solution $Eu_{1 - x}Ca_{x}B_6$ single crystals (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.244) have been studied at 1.8 ≤ T ≤ 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 8 T. Calcium doping is shown to result in a metal-insulator transition, which occurs at x_{MIT} ≈ 0.2. In vicinity of metal-insulator transition the effect of colossal magnetoresistance is found to be very sensitive to Ca content, the amplitude varying from Δ = [ ρ (0)- ρ (8T)]/ρ(8T) ≈1.4 × $10^2$ to Δ ≈ 7.5 × $10^3$ for 0.14 ≤ x ≤ 0.16. The analysis of magnetic contribution to heat capacity shows that a large amount of magnetic entropy ( ≈ 30%) releases in $Eu_{0.845}Ca_{0.155}B_6$ when moving from the Curie temperature $T_{C}$ ≈ 5.5 K to the characteristic one T* ≈ 30 K. This observation as well as the large amplitude of low field colossal magnetoresistance effect and the deviation of magnetic susceptibility from the Curie-Weiss law detected for x = 0.155 compound in the interval $T_{C}$ ≤ T ≤ T* seem to be associated with magnetic phase separation induced by Ca doping.

Opis:
Meteor and fireball observations are key to the derivation of both the inventory and physical characterization of small solar system bodies orbiting in the vicinity of the Earth. For several decades, observation of these phenomena has only been possible via ground-based instruments. The proposed JEM-EUSO mission has the potential to become the first operational space-based platform to share this capability. In comparison to the observation of extremely energetic cosmic ray events, which is the primary objective of JEM-EUSO, meteor phenomena are very slow, since their typical speeds are of the order of a few tens of km/sec (whereas cosmic rays travel at light speed). The observing strategy developed to detect meteors may also be applied to the detection of nuclearites, which have higher velocities, a wider range of possible trajectories, but move well below the speed of light and can therefore be considered as slow events for JEM-EUSO. The possible detection of nuclearites greatly enhances the scientific rationale behind the JEM-EUSO mission.

Opis:
Designed as the first mission to explore the ultra-high energy universe from space, JEM-EUSO observes the Earth’s atmosphere at night to record the ultraviolet tracks generated by the extensive air showers. We present the expected geometrical aperture and annual exposure in the nadir and tilt modes for ultra-high energy cosmic rays observation as a function of the altitude of the International Space Station.

Opis:
We are conducting tests of optical and electronics components of JEMEUSO at the Telescope Array site in Utah with a ground-based "EUSO-TA" detector. The tests will include an engineering validation of the detector, cross-calibration of EUSO-TA with the TA fluorescence detector and observations of air shower events. Also, the proximity of the TA’s Electron Light Source will allow for convenient use of this calibration device. In this paper, we report initial results obtained with the EUSO-TA telescope.

Opis:
Ultra high energy photons and neutrinos are carriers of very important astrophysical information. They may be produced at the sites of cosmic ray acceleration or during the propagation of the cosmic rays in the intergalactic medium. In contrast to charged cosmic rays, photon and neutrino arrival directions point to the production site because they are not deflected by the magnetic fields of the Galaxy or the intergalactic medium. In this work we study the characteristics of the longitudinal development of showers initiated by photons and neutrinos at the highest energies. These studies are relevant for development of techniques for neutrino and photon identification by the JEM-EUSO telescope. In particular, we study the possibility of observing the multi-peak structure of very deep horizontal neutrino showers with JEM-EUSO. We also discuss the possibility to determine the flavor content of the incident neutrino flux by taking advantage of the different characteristics of the longitudinal profiles generated by different type of neutrinos. This is of grate importance for the study of the fundamental properties of neutrinos at the highest energies. Regarding photons, we discuss the detectability of the cosmogenic component by JEM-EUSO and also estimate the expected upper limits on the photon fraction which can be obtained from the future JEM-EUSO data for the case in which there are no photons in the samples.

Opis:
Mounted on the International Space Station(ISS), the Extreme Universe Space Observatory, on-board the Japanese Experimental Module (JEM-EUSO), relies on the well established fluorescence technique to observe Extensive Air Showers (EAS) developing in the earth’s atmosphere. Focusing on the detection of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR) in the decade of 10^{20} eV, JEM-EUSO will face new challenges by applying this technique from space. The EUSO Simulation and Analysis Framework (ESAF) has been developed in this context to provide a full end-to-end simulation frame, and assess the overall performance of the detector. Within ESAF, angular reconstruction can be separated into two conceptually different steps. The first step is pattern recognition, or filtering, of the signal to separate it from the background. The second step is to perform different types of fitting in order to search for the relevant geometrical parameters that best describe the previously selected signal. In this paper, we discuss some of the techniques we have implemented in ESAF to perform the geometrical reconstruction of EAS seen by JEM-EUSO. We also conduct thorough tests to assess the performances of these techniques in conditions which are relevant to the scope of the JEM-EUSO mission. We conclude by showing the expected angular resolution in the energy range that JEM-EUSO is expected to observe.

Opis:
The Extreme Universe Space Observatory (EUSO) on–board the Japanese Experimental Module (JEM) of the International Space Station aims at the detection of ultra high energy cosmic rays from space. The mission consists of a UV telescope which will detect the fluorescence light emitted by cosmic ray showers in the atmosphere. The mission, currently developed by a large international collaboration, is designed to be launched within this decade. In this article, we present the reconstruction of the energy of the observed events and we also address the X_{max} reconstruction. After discussing the algorithms developed for the energy and X_{max} reconstruction, we present several estimates of the energy resolution, as a function of the incident angle, and energy of the event. Similarly, estimates of the X_{max} resolution for various conditions are presented.

Opis:
The main goal of the JEM-EUSO experiment is the study of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR, 10^{19}−10^{21} e V), but the method which will be used (detection of the secondary light emissions induced by cosmic rays in the atmosphere) allows to study other luminous phenomena. The UHECRs will be detected through the measurement of the emission in the range between 290 and 430 m, where some part of Transient Luminous Events (TLEs) emission also appears. This work discusses the possibility of using the JEM-EUSO Telescope to get new scientific results on TLEs. The high time resolution of this instrument allows to observe the evolution of TLEs with great precision just at the moment of their origin. The paper consists of four parts: review of the present knowledge on the TLE, presentation of the results of the simulations of the TLE images in the JEM-EUSO telescope, results of the Russian experiment Tatiana–2 and discussion of the possible progress achievable in this field with JEM-EUSO as well as possible cooperation with other space projects devoted to the study of TLE – TARANIS and ASIM. In atmospheric physics, the study of TLEs became one of the main physical subjects of interest after their discovery in 1989. In the years 1992 – 1994 detection was performed from satellite, aircraft and space shuttle and recently from the International Space Station. These events have short duration (milliseconds) and small scales (km to tens of km) and appear at altitudes 50 – 100 km. Their nature is still not clear and each new experimental data can be useful for a better understanding of these mysterious phenomena.

Opis:
EUSO-Balloon is a pathfinder for JEM-EUSO, the Extreme Universe Space Observatory which is to be hosted on-board the International Space Station. As JEM-EUSO is designed to observe Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR)-induced Extensive Air Showers (EAS) by detecting their ultraviolet light tracks "from above", EUSO-Balloon is a nadir-pointing UV telescope too. With its Fresnel Optics and Photo-Detector Module, the instrument monitors a 50 km^{2} ground surface area in a wavelength band of 290–430 nm, collecting series of images at a rate of 400,000 frames/sec. The objectives of the balloon demonstrator are threefold: a) perform a full end-to-end test of a JEM-EUSO prototype consisting of all the main subsystems of the space experiment, b) measure the effective terrestrial UV background, with a spatial and temporal resolution relevant for JEM-EUSO. c) detect tracks of ultraviolet light from near space for the first time. The latter is a milestone in the development of UHECR science, paving the way for any future space-based UHECR observatory. On August 25, 2014, EUSO-Balloon was launched from Timmins Stratospheric Balloon Base (Ontario, Canada) by the balloon division of the French Space Agency CNES. From a float altitude of 38 km, the instrument operated during the entire astronomical night, observing UV-light from a variety of ground-covers and from hundreds of simulated EASs, produced by flashers and a laser during a two-hour helicopter under-flight.

Opis:
The JEM-EUSO telescope will be, after calibration, a very accurate instrument which yields the number of received photons from the number of measured photo-electrons. The project is in phase A (demonstration of the concept) including already operating prototype instruments, i.e. many parts of the instrument have been constructed and tested. Calibration is a crucial part of the instrument and its use. The focal surface (FS) of the JEM-EUSO telescope will consist of about 5000 photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs), which have to be well calibrated to reach the required accuracy in reconstructing the air-shower parameters. The optics system consists of 3 plastic Fresnel (double-sided) lenses of 2.5 m diameter. The aim of the calibration system is to measure the efficiencies (transmittances) of the optics and absolute efficiencies of the entire focal surface detector. The system consists of 3 main components: (i) Pre-flight calibration devices on ground, where the efficiency and gain of the PMTs will be measured absolutely and also the transmittance of the optics will be. (ii) On-board relative calibration system applying two methods: a) operating during the day when the JEM-EUSO lid will be closed with small light sources on board. b) operating during the night, together with data taking: the monitoring of the background rate over identical sites. (iii) Absolute in-flight calibration, again, applying two methods: a) measurement of the moon light, reflected on high altitude, high albedo clouds. b) measurements of calibrated flashes and tracks produced by the Global Light System (GLS). Some details of each calibration method will be described in this paper.

Opis:
The JEM-EUSO (Extreme Universe Space Observatory on-board the Japanese Experiment Module) mission will conduct extensive air shower (EAS) observations on the International Space Station (ISS). Following the ISS orbit, JEM-EUSO will experience continuous changes in the atmospheric conditions, including cloud presence. The influence of clouds on space-based observation is, therefore, an important topic to investigate from both EAS property and cloud climatology points of view. In the present work, the impact of clouds on the apparent profile of EAS is demonstrated through the simulation studies, taking into account the JEM-EUSO instrument and properties of the clouds. These results show a dependence on the cloud-top altitude and optical depth of the cloud. The analyses of satellite measurements on the cloud distribution indicate that more than 60 % of the cases allow for conventional EAS observation, and an additional $\sim$ 20 % with reduced quality. The combination of the relevant factors results in an effective trigger aperture of EAS observation $\sim$ 72 %, compared to the one in the clear atmosphere condition.

Opis:
The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM-EUSO) on board the International Space Station (ISS) is the first space-based mission worldwide in the field of Ultra High-Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECR). For UHECR experiments, the atmosphere is not only the showering calorimeter for the primary cosmic rays, it is an essential part of the readout system, as well. Moreover, the atmosphere must be calibrated and has to be considered as input for the analysis of the fluorescence signals. Therefore, the JEM-EUSO Space Observatory is implementing an Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) that will include an IR-Camera and a LIDAR. The AMS Infrared Camera is an infrared, wide FoV, imaging system designed to provide the cloud coverage along the JEM-EUSO track and the cloud top height to properly achieve the UHECR reconstruction in cloudy conditions. In this paper, an updated preliminary design status, the results from the calibration tests of the first prototype, the simulation of the instrument, and preliminary cloud top height retrieval algorithms are presented.

Opis:
The JEM-EUSO telescope will detect Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) from space, detecting the UV Fluorescence Light produced by Extensive Air Showers (EAS) induced by the interaction of the cosmic rays with the earth’s atmosphere. The capability to reconstruct the properties of the primary cosmic ray depends on the accurate measurement of the atmospheric conditions in the region of EAS development. The Atmospheric Monitoring (AM) system of JEM-EUSO will host a LIDAR, operating in the UV band, and an Infrared camera to monitor the cloud cover in the JEM-EUSO Field of View, in order to be sensitive to clouds with an optical depth τ $\geq$ 0.15 and to measure the cloud top altitude with an accuracy of 500 m and an altitude resolution of 500 m.

Opis:
Space-based detectors for the study of extreme energy cosmic rays (EECR) are being prepared as a promising new method for detecting highest energy cosmic rays. A pioneering space device – the "tracking ultraviolet set-up" (TUS) – is in the last stage of its construction and testing. The TUS detector will collect preliminary data on EECR in the conditions of a space environment, which will be extremely useful for planning the major JEM-EUSO detector operation.

Opis:
We describe results of a planetary defense exercise conducted during the close approach to Earth by the near-Earth asteroid (99942) Apophis during 2020 December–2021 March. The planetary defense community has been conducting observational campaigns since 2017 to test the operational readiness of the global planetary defense capabilities. These community-led global exercises were carried out with the support of NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office and the International Asteroid Warning Network. The Apophis campaign is the third in our series of planetary defense exercises. The goal of this campaign was to recover, track, and characterize Apophis as a potential impactor to exercise the planetary defense system including observations, hypothetical risk assessment and risk prediction, and hazard communication. Based on the campaign results, we present lessons learned about our ability to observe and model a potential impactor. Data products derived from astrometric observations were available for inclusion in our risk assessment model almost immediately, allowing real-time updates to the impact probability calculation and possible impact locations. An early NEOWISE diameter measurement provided a significant improvement in the uncertainty on the range of hypothetical impact outcomes. The availability of different characterization methods such as photometry, spectroscopy, and radar provided robustness to our ability to assess the potential impact risk.

Opis:
Domestication of horses fundamentally transformed long-range mobility and warfare. However, modern domesticated breeds do not descend from the earliest domestic horse lineage associated with archaeological evidence of bridling, milking and corralling at Botai, Central Asia around 3500 BC. Other longstanding candidate regions for horse domestication, such as Iberia and Anatolia, have also recently been challenged. Thus, the genetic, geographic and temporal origins of modern domestic horses have remained unknown. Here we pinpoint the Western Eurasian steppes, especially the lower Volga-Don region, as the homeland of modern domestic horses. Furthermore, we map the population changes accompanying domestication from 273 ancient horse genomes. This reveals that modern domestic horses ultimately replaced almost all other local populations as they expanded rapidly across Eurasia from about 2000 BC, synchronously with equestrian material culture, including Sintashta spoke-wheeled chariots. We find that equestrianism involved strong selection for critical locomotor and behavioural adaptations at the GSDMC and ZFPM1 genes. Our results reject the commonly held association between horseback riding and the massive expansion of Yamnaya steppe pastoralists into Europe around 3000 BC driving the spread of Indo-European languages. This contrasts with the scenario in Asia where Indo-Iranian languages, chariots and horses spread together, following the early second millennium BC Sintashta culture.
