Opis:
The article examines film productions of London’s National Theatre, which are based on its most famous performances. The author discusses the techniques used to produce cinematic versions of the plays and analyses the methods of re-creating the theatrical experience as well as the way it affects the models of theatre reception. His starting point is the thesis that this form of transmitting the theatrical experience serves to impose a specific, mainstream cultural model whose impact is strengthened by the use of new media. Subject to the media treatment, the theatrical experience becomes more intense and gives the spectator an illusion of more direct contact with the work than a traditional visit to the theatre. The processed experience has the potential to create new cultural models whose predominant characteristic is the pleasure of reception.

Opis:
The article reflects on the issues of European social, political and ethical disintegration by looking at two plays which represent both geographic and mental migration of European citizens. Zinnie Harris’s play dramatizes a journey by an energetic businesswoman from the state of seeming success to the condition of collapse of the entire continent. Masłowska’s drama tells the story of a couple who have lost their geographic but also existential bearings after a prolonged bout of drug abuse and partying. The article aims at presenting the European continent as a space of alienated social and personal experience, as a community of people in permanent exile from both the private space and the public ideologies. The two plays offer a reflection on the condition of pre-Brexit Europe with the power of capturing representative lives of those individuals who have lost the sense of the common cause.
Artykuł ukazuje społeczną, polityczną i etyczną dezintegrację koncepcji wspólnej Europy na przykładzie dwóch dramatów opowiadających historie geograficznej i tożsamościowej migracji Europejczyków. Sztuka Zinnie Harris przedstawia podróż z Wielkiej Brytanii do Aleksandrii, której towarzyszy finansowy i instytucjonalny upadek europejskich struktur państwowych. W dramacie Masłowskiej ukazana zostaje historia dwóch podróżujących osób, które straciły zarówno tożsamość, jak i kontrolę nad własnym losem i kierunkiem podróży. W obu utworach Europa jawi się jako miejsce alienacji, jako wspólnota poszukująca tożsamości i doświadczająca wykluczenia. Autorki opowiadają o kryzysie tożsamości, który widoczny był w okresie przed brexitem, a który obecnie stanowi główne wyzwanie kontynentu poszukującego nowej idei wspólnotowej.

Opis:
Christina Reid was a Northern Irish playwright whose plays maintained a distinctly socially-oriented perspective. In her works from 1980s and 1990s, she penetrated spaces of Belfast city inhabited by marginalized, Protestant working-class communities. Her writing stands in conspicuous contrast to stereotypical plays written in the South of the island. If the South playwriting could be associated with imaginative, poetic, unrealistic representation of rural life on the one hand, and traditional, Gaelic heritage on the other, the Belfast scenery is that of working-class, post-industrial depression. Here, political violence equals social injustice, contributing to the realistic presentation of characters on the verge of survival in socially, economically, and politically troubled environment. Reid’s writing can also be deconstructed as a specific example of vision stimulated by marginalised location in the north—the north understood not as an affluent, middle-class, Eurocentric geography of continental capitals but as a province of Western world torn with political and economic problems. This article argues that knowledge is located in particular material circumstances and that it is to some extent produced by the geographic conditions of its existence. Many literary works conceived in Northern Ireland, Reid’s drama included, develop their own language of analysis and description, their own discourse of survival in which their peculiar conditions are uniquely phrased and in which an intriguing perspective from the margins of Western culture is coined. The aim of the article is to analyse how Christina Reid and her plays produce a characteristic language, dialogue, diction of the north and how these forms of communication, both linguistic and theatrical, reflect back on the dominating knowledge of  Irish as well as central European cultures.

Artykuł stanowi podsumowanie kilku sposobów rozumienia współczesnej humanistyki, której zasadniczą cechą pozostaje aspekt emancypacyjny oraz jej charakter relacyjny. Humanistyka postrzegana jest w tym kontekście nie tylko jako dyscyplina nauki zdominowana przez otwartość, ale przede wszystkim jako metodologia akceptująca własną nieostateczność. Ten element miękkiej strategii badawczej, w której ważnym aspektem refleksji pozostaje również doświadczenie osoby badającej, obecny jest w tych dziedzinach humanistyki, które łączą się z szeroko rozumianym obszarem kultury cyfrowej oraz wirtualnej rzeczywistości. Humanistyka badająca kulturę cyfrową zmuszona jest do redefinicji własnych narzędzi, a także do uznania innych podmiotów stanowiących źródło doświadczenia. Ten relacyjny charakter humanistyki, w którym ewoluuje ona ku wielości podmiotów i perspektyw badawczych stanowi zarówno wyzwanie, przed którym stają współcześni humaniści, jak i szansę dalszego rozwoju tej gałęzi nauki.
The article offers a summary of a number of approaches to contemporary humanities in which the main dynamics of research and methodology could be characterised as emancipation. The humanities is seen here not merely as an open discipline, but it is viewed as a method of research able of accepting its relational and indeterminate progress. The soft dimension of its analysis, which is also rooted in an individual biography of the researcher, results from a particular attention paid to other than human subjects. In particular, the humanities related to digital culture and virtual reality needs to redefine its research methods but also communicate with other sources of perception and experience. This relational nature of contemporary humanities in which it reflects the complexity of multiple subjects and perspectives challenges more traditional positions of analysis but simultaneously offers a chance of development.

Among the countless afterlives of William Shakespeare’s playwriting there is a strong presence of his visions of state and political powers. In universal, philosophical ways Shakespeare was addressing issues concerning the state power, social organization, hierarchy, and rank in what inevitably were the origins of modern, capitalistic societies. Therefore, many of his powerful images resonate today in the works of contemporary writers who intend to compose stories of utopian or dystopian character which diagnose the condition of modern society. This article aims to present three plays by post-war English dramatists (Edward Bond’s Bingo, Frank McGuinness’s Mutabilitie, and David Greig’s Dunsinane) which reuse Shakespearian themes, motifs, or characters to build politically contentious and subversive plots within a narrower context of their specific cultures, societies, and historical periods. It is assumed that the Shakespearean legacy the writers engage with is not merely a dramatic text, but  a complex cultural structure of accumulated narratives, interpretations, and myths which contemporary dramatists rewrite and recycle. The aim of the article is to show how this multifaceted legacy of Shakespeare’s life and work helps build dystopian visions of contemporary communities or images of state and political justice. In other words, the article intends to analyse ways of visualizing modern societies through the palimpsestic presence of the Renaissance master.
