Opis:
Emerging evidence suggests expression from human endogenous retrovirus (HERV) loci likely contributes to, or is a biomarker of, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) disease progression. However, the relationship between HERV expression and GBM malignant phenotype is unclear. Applying several in silico analyses based on data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), we derived a locus-specific HERV transcriptome for glioma that revealed 211 HERVs significantly dysregulated in the comparisons of GBM vs. normal brain (NB), GBM vs. low-grade glioma (LGG), and LGG vs. NB. Our analysis supported development of a unique HERV scoring algorithm that segregated GBM, LGG, and NB. Interestingly, lower HERV scores showed correlation with lower survival in GBM. However, HERV scores were less robust in predicting LGG survival or LGG progression to GBM. Functional prediction analysis linked the 211 HERV loci with 18 voltage-gated potassium channel genes. The functional link between dysregulated HERVs and specific potassium channel genes may contribute to better understanding of GBM pathogenesis, disease progression, and possibly drug resistance.

Several business scandals have highlighted the dark side of leadership and the relationship between leaders and followers. The ethical concerns of leaders may influence the ethical decision–making of followers. The purpose of this study is to explore the association between leaders' and followers' ethical judgment. A sample of Taiwanese purchasing professionals was assessed in terms of their ethical judgment development measured by the Defining Issues Test. The findings indicate that leaders will have higher overall scores for ethical judgment development than followers. There is a positive association between leaders' and followers' ethical judgment development. Followers will exhibit higher ethical judgment development when their leaders have higher ethical judgment development. Implications of research findings are also discussed.

Opis:
In recent years, many studies have attempted to use deep learning for moving object detection. Some research also combines object detection methods with traditional background modeling. However, this approach may run into some problems with parameter settings and weight imbalances. In order to solve the aforementioned problems, this paper proposes a new way to combine ViBe and Faster-RCNN for moving object detection. To be more specific, our approach is to confine the candidate boxes to only retain the area containing moving objects through traditional background modeling. Furthermore, in order to make the detection able to more accurately filter out the static object, the probability of each region proposal then being retained. In this paper, we compare four famous methods, namely GMM and ViBe for the traditional methods, and DeepBS and SFEN for the deep learning-based methods. The result of the experiment shows that the proposed method has the best overall performance score among all methods. The proposed method is also robust to the dynamic background and environmental changes and is able to separate stationary objects from moving objects. Especially the overall F-measure with the CDNET 2014 dataset (like in the dynamic background and intermittent object motion cases) was 0,8572.

Opis:
Enriching human microbiota has been proposed as a mechanism by which greenspace exposure improves human health. The existing evidence is scarce with few studies able to evaluate causality. We conducted a randomized controlled trial of 30 healthy undergraduate students to explore the intervention effects of greenspace on human gut and oral microbiota alpha-diversity, composition, differential genera and functional pathways. The study participants were divided into three groups, including outdoor greenspace (GS) group, outdoor non-greenspace (NGS) group, and indoor group, who visited a park, an open space without vegetation, and a classroom, respectively, for two hours per day over seven days. Differences in microbial alpha-diversity and composition across various groups were tested using Wilcoxon test and permutational multivariate analysis of variance, respectively. Linear discriminant analysis effect size analysis was performed to test differences in genera and functional pathways. Greenspace intervention significantly increased gut microbiota alpha-diversity, especially the observed Amplicon Sequence variant indexes and the Faith indexes (both p <0.05). In addition, the intervention substantially changed the composition of gut microbiota, of which the relative abundances of potentially beneficial bacteria increased. Further, the greenspace intervention affected several functional pathways of gut microbiota, including "substance dependence", "specific types of cancer", and "viral infectious diseases". However, we did not find any significant effect of greenspace intervention on oral microbiota. Our results suggest that greenspace intervention diversifies the gut microbiota and alters its composition. These findings could help to reinforce the potential of increasing people’s access to greenspace as a public health intervention.

Opis:
An increasing proportion of the world’s population lives in urban settings that have limited greenspace. Urbanization puts pressure on existing greenspace and reduces its access. Climate impacts, including increased temperature and extreme weather events, challenge the maintenance of urban vegetation, reducing its ecosystem services and benefits for human health. Although urban greenspace has been positively associated with numerous health indicators, the evidence for allergies and respiratory health is much less clear and mixed. To address these uncertainties, a workshop with 20 global participants was held in Munich, Germany, in May 2024, focusing on the impact of greenspace-related co-exposures on allergies and respiratory health. This narrative review captures key insights from the workshop, including the roles of urban greenspace in (1) climate change mitigation, (2) interactions with pollen, and (3) emissions of biogenic volatile organic compounds and their byproducts, such as ozone. Additionally, it presents research and stakeholder recommendations from the workshop. Future studies that integrate advanced greenspace exposure assessments and consider the interplay of greenspace with pollen and biogenic volatile organic compounds, along with their relevant byproducts are needed. Increased public awareness and policy actions will also be essential for developing urban greenspace that maximizes health benefits, minimizes risks, and ensures resilience amid a changing climate and rapid urbanization.

Importance. Living in areas with more vegetation (referred to as residential greenness) may be associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), but little data are available from low- and middle-income countries. In addition, it remains unclear whether the presence of cardiometabolic disorders modifies or mediates the association between residential greenness and CVD. Objective. To evaluate the associations between residential greenness, cardiometabolic disorders, and CVD prevalence among adults in China. Design, Setting, and Participants. This analysis was performed as part of the 33 Communities Chinese Health Study, a large population-based cross-sectional study that was conducted in 33 communities (ranging from 0.25-0.64 km2) in 3 cities within the Liaoning province of northeastern China between April 1 and December 31, 2009. Participants included adults aged 18 to 74 years who had resided in the study area for 5 years or more. Greenness levels surrounding each participant’s residential community were assessed using the normalized difference vegetation index and the soil-adjusted vegetation index from 2010. Lifetime CVD status (including myocardial infarction, heart failure, coronary heart disease, cerebral thrombosis, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral embolism, and subarachnoid hemorrhage) was defined as a self-report of a physician diagnosis of CVD at the time of the survey. Cardiometabolic disorders, including hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and overweight or obese status, were measured and defined clinically. Generalized linear mixed models were used to evaluate the association between residential greenness levels and CVD prevalence. A 3-way decomposition method was used to explore whether the presence of cardiometabolic disorders mediated or modified the association between residential greenness and CVD. Data were analyzed from October 10 to May 30, 2020. Main Outcomes and Measures. Lifetime CVD status, the presence of cardiometabolic disorders, and residential greenness level. Results. Among 24 845 participants, the mean (SD) age was 45.6 (13.3) years, and 12 661 participants (51.0%) were men. A total of 1006 participants (4.1%) reported having a diagnosis of CVD. An interquartile range (1-IQR) increase in the normalized difference vegetation index within 500 m of a community was associated with a 27% lower likelihood (odds ratio [OR], 0.73; 95% CI, 0.65-0.83; P < .001) of CVD prevalence, and an IQR increase in the soil-adjusted vegetation index within 500 m of a community was associated with a 26% lower likelihood (OR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.66-0.84; P < .001) of CVD prevalence. The presence of cardiometabolic disorders was found to mediate the association between residential greenness and CVD, with mediation effects of 4.5% for hypertension, 4.1% for type 2 diabetes, 3.1% for overweight or obese status, 12.7% for hypercholesterolemia, 8.7% for hypertriglyceridemia, and 11.1% for high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Conclusions and Relevance. In this cross-sectional study, higher residential greenness levels were associated with lower CVD prevalence, and this association may be partially mediated by the presence of cardiometabolic disorders. Further studies, preferably longitudinal, are warranted to confirm these findings.

Opis:
Experimental data suggests that PM1 is more toxic than PM2.5 although the epidemiologic evidence suggests that the health associations are similar. However, few objective exposure data are available to compare the associations of PM1 and PM2.5 with children lung function. Our objectives are a) to evaluate associations between long-term exposure to PM1, PM2.5 and children’s lung function, and b) to compare the associations between PM1 and PM2.5. From 2012 to 2013, we enrolled 6,740 children (7-14 years), randomly recruited from primary and middle schools located in seven cities in northeast China. We measured lung function including forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), peak expiratory flow (PEF), and maximal mid-expiratory flow (MMEF) utilizing two portable electronic spirometers. We dichotomized continuous lung function measures according the expected values for gender and age. The spatial resolution at which PM1 and PM2.5 estimated were estimated using a machine learning method and the temporal average concentrations were averaged from 2009 to 2012. A multilevel regression model was used to estimate the associations of PM1, PM2.5 exposure and lung function measures, adjusted for confounding factors. Associations with lower lung function were consistently larger for PM1 than for PM2.5. Adjusted odds ratios (OR) per interquartile range greater PM1 ranged from 1.53 for MMEF (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.20-1.96) to 2.14 for FEV1 (95% CI: 1.66-2.76) and ORs for PM2.5 ranged from 1.36 for MMEF (95%CI: 1.12–1.66) to 1.82 for FEV1 (95%CI: 1.49-2.22), respectively. PM1 and PM2.5 had.
