Opis:
Comparison of the staminate flower and pollen of Betula platyphylla between autotetraploid and diploid individuals may reveal the reason for cross sterility when an autotetraploid male parent is crossed with a diploid female parent. Staminate flowers and pollen from seven autotetraploid individual trees were examined. The morphologies of the staminate flower and pollen and pollen germination of these autotetraploid individuals were compared with diploid trees. The structure of the staminate flower did not differ between autotetraploids and diploids, whereas the size of the staminate flower was larger in the autotetraploids compared with the diploids. The mean diameter and pore depth of the pollen were significantly larger in autotetraploid individuals compared with diploids, and several abnormalities in pollen morphology were found commonly amongst pollen from the autotetraploid trees. The germination rate of pollen from autotetraploids was significantly inferior to that of diploids and there was a significant negative correlation between germination rate and the percentage of abnormal pollen. These results demonstrate that the autotetraploid should not be chosen as the male parent to obtain hybrid triploid progenies because the pollen is abnormal and results in low fertility despite its large size. The results provide important information for selecting and distributing parent strains with the aim of building seed orchards of triploid birch trees.

Opis:
A new method to calculate the surface interaction energy of ceramic particles and epoxy resin network was investigated using the Material Studio software solution. Detailed simulations were performed with molecular dynamics (MD) method, using Amorphous Cell module, creating relatively simple surface models of polymer (epoxy resin) and ceramics (Al2O3, SiO2 and SiC). The surface models obtained were used to calculate properties and the surface interaction energy of the materials studied. The computed results are in good agreement with the experimental data, confirming the ability to employ the described simulation method in theoretical evaluation of interaction between various filler or reinforcing materials and the polymer matrix.
Testowano nową metodę obliczania energii oddziaływań powierzchni cząstek ceramicznych z żywicą epoksydową. Obliczenia wykonywano korzystając z oprogramowania Material Studio. Szczegółowe symulacje prowadzono metodą dynamiki molekularnej (MD) za pomocą modułu Amorphous Cell, tworząc modele powierzchni polimeru (żywicy epoksydowej) imateriału ceramicznego (Al2O3, SiO2 lub SiC). Otrzymane modele posłużyły do obliczeń właściwości oraz energii oddziaływań powierzchni badanych materiałów. Uzyskano dobrą zgodność wyników symulacji zdanymi doświadczalnymi, co potwierdziło możliwość zastosowania opisanej metody symulacji do teoretycznej oceny oddziaływania różnych napełniaczy ceramicznych z matrycą polimerową.

Opis:
Korean arborvitae (Thuja koraiensis) is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to Korea and the extreme Changbai Mountain of China threatened by habitat loss. Due to the limited genomic sources of Ko- rean arborvitae, it is important to explore transcriptome to understand this economically important plant. We used RNA-seq technology to characterize the transcriptome of root, stem and leaf in Korean arborvitae, respectively. Based on the bioinformatics analysis of assembled transcriptome data, transcriptional path- ways and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. There were 152.26 million reads generated, and 446,568 unigenes with a mean size of 423.51 nt obtained via de novo assembly. Of these, 204,091 unigenes (45.70%) were further annotated by comparison to public protein databases. A total of 63,495 unigenes (14.22%) were associated into 130 pathways by searching against the KEGG database. DEGs analysis identified 11,890, 5,900 and 10,136 DEGs from the comparison of root vs. stem, root vs. leaf and stem vs. leaf, respectively. Besides, photosynthesis, plant hormone signal transduction and metabolism and biosynthesis of sugar and amino acids were changed in different tissues. We obtained 446,568 unigenes in Korean arborvitae and 11,890, 5,900 and 10,136 DEGs from the compar- ison of root vs. stem, root vs. leaf and stem vs. leaf, respectively. These results will aid in understanding and carrying out future studies on the molecular basis of Korean arborvitae and contribute to future artificial production and applications.

Opis:
Plant breeders have focused much attention on polyploid trees because of their resistance for forestry. To evaluate the impact of intraspecies genome duplication on NaHCO3 stress, a series of Betula platyphylla autotetraploids and diploids were generated from the same family. The growth, proline content and proline-associated gene expression of these autotetraploid individuals were compared with those diploid trees. Autotetraploids were superior in injury index and relative growth of height and base diameter compared to diploids. The proline content was higher in autotetraploid individuals compared to diploids. Gene expression data revealed autotetraploids were generally higher expression in BpP5CS1, BpP5CS2, Bp- P5CR1, BpP5CR2, BpP5CR3 and BpOAT and were lower expression in BpProDH and BpP5CDH compared to diploid trees. These results shed light on resistance variation in birch autotetraploidization and polyploidy breeding as a new approach for genetic improvement of birch trees.

Opis:
The adsorption of pentafl uorobenzene on nine ionic liquid-based silicas was investigated using solid phase extraction. The effects of several variables such as the type of ionic liquid groups, adsorption time, temperatures and water ratio in the solution system were experimentally evaluated. The imidazole-chloride ionic liquid group based silica exhibited the highest adsorption efficiency under the optimized conditions of 5 min adsorption at 30°C in water/methanol (30:70, vol%) solution. In addition, the effects of pH, as well as type and concentrations of chloride salts were investigated. At pH values other than neutral and high salt concentration, the adsorption efficiency was reduced. Finally, the relative standard deviation of less than 5.8% over a 5-day period showed a high precision for the nine tested sorbents.

Opis:
The exact stability bound of the parasitic parameter for a discrete-time singularly perturbed system is determined by the linear fractional transformation (LFT) framework. Two systematic approaches including time-domain and frequency-domain methods are proposed to solve this problem based on the unified LFT framework. One employs the Kronecker product of LFTs and the guardian map theory. The other is to plot the eigenvalue loci of a real rational function matrix. Two examples are given to show the feasibility of the approaches.

Opis:
Basing on the consistent couple stress theory (CCST), we develop a unified size-dependent shear deformation theory to analyze the free vibration characteristics of simply supported, porous functionally graded (FG) piezoelectric microplates which resting on the Winkler-Pasternak foundation are subjected to electric voltages. Various CCST-based shear deformation theories can be reproduced by incorporating their corresponding shape functions, which characterize the through-thickness distributions of the shear deformations, into the unified size-dependent theory. The reproduced CCST-based plate theories include the classical plate theory (CPT), the first-order shear deformation plate theory (SDPT), Reddy’s refined SDPT, the sinusoidal SDPT, the exponential SDPT, and the hyperbolic SDPT. The unified size-dependent theory is subsequently used to determine the natural frequencies of simply supported, porous FG piezoelectric microplates and their corresponding vibration mode shapes. The effects of the material length scale parameter, the length-to-thickness ratio, the material-property gradient index, different values of the applied voltages, the porosity parameter, different porosity distribution patterns, the Winkler spring coefficient, and the shear modulus of the surrounding medium on the natural frequencies of the porous FG piezoelectric microplates are examined and appear to be significant.

Opis:
Remarkable thermomechanical and electrical properties of silicon carbide (SiC) make this material very attractive for high-temperature, high-power, and high-frequency applications. Because of very low values of diffusion coefficient of most impurities in SiC, ion implantation is the best method to selectively introduce dopants over well-defined depths in SiC. Aluminium is commonly used for creating p-type regions in SiC. However, post-implantation radiation damage, which strongly deteriorates required electric properties of the implanted layers, is difficult to anneal even at high temperatures because of remaining residual damage. Therefore implantation at elevated target temperatures (hot implantation) is nowadays an accepted method to decrease the level of the residual radiation damage by avoiding ion beam-induced amorphization. The main objective of this study is to compare the results of the Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy with channeling and micro-Raman spectroscopy investigations of room temperature and 500°C $Al^{+}$ ion implantation-induced damage in 6H-SiC and its removal by high temperature (up to 1600°C) thermal annealing.

Opis:
We propose a new mechanism to achieve mode transformation. In a unidirectional air waveguide we place some metal slabs to form the unidirectional edge loop. Based on the effect of mode interference, the even mode or the odd mode can be completely canceled from their degenerated state through a precise adjustment of slab position, which leads to another mode to be released. By this mechanism, we have achieved continual transformations between even mode and odd mode.
