Opis:
A new acrioceratid ammonite, Dissimilites intermedius sp. nov., from the Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) of the Puez area (Dolomites, northern Italy) is described. Dissimilites intermedius sp. nov. is an intermediate form between D. dissimilis and D. trinodosum. The new species combines the ribbing style of D. dissimilis (bifurcating with intercalating single ribs) with the tuberculation style of D. trinodosum (trituberculation on entire shell). The shallow-helical spire, entirely comprising single ribs intercalated by trituberculated main ribs, is similar to the one of the assumed ancestor Acrioceras, whereas the increasing curvation of the younger forms resembles similar patterns observed in the descendant Toxoceratoides. These characters support the hypothesis of a direct evolutionary lineage from Acrioceras via Dissimilites to Toxoceratoides. D. intermedius sp. nov. ranges from the upper Lower Barremian (Moutoniceras moutonianum Zone) to the lower Upper Barremian (Toxancyloceras vandenheckii Zone). The new species allows to better understand the evolution of the genus Dissimilites. The genus appears within the Nicklesia pulchella Zone represented by D. duboise, which most likely evolved into D. dissimilis. In the Kotetishvilia compressissima Zone, two morphological forms developed: smaller forms very similar to Acrioceras and forms with very long shaft and juvenile spire like in D. intermedius sp. nov. The latter most likely gave rise to D. subalternatus and D. trinodosum in the M. moutonianum Zone, forms which were probably ancestral to the genus Toxoceratoides.

Opis:
Early Cretaceous calpionellid samples were collected at the ammonoid-bearing Hochkogellocality in the southern most part of the Reichraming Nappe (Ebenforst Syncline, Northern Calcareous Alps). The microfossil fauna sampled from limestone parts of the Rossfeld Formation indicates an early Valanginian age. The standard Calpionellites Zone (with darderi and major subzones) coincides with the early Valanginian ammonoid zones of Busnardoites campylotoxus and Tirnovella pertransiens. The deposition of the limestones in this area occurred in an unstable environment disturbed by gravitational transport which accounts for the different sedimen tary components and accompanying fossils in the accumulated layers, transported from a source area situated to the south.

Opis:
New stratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental data are presented for the northeastern part of the Trento Plateau (Puez area, Southern Alps, Italy). The studied section corresponds to the upper Hauterivian Balearites balearis and "Pseudothurmannia ohmi" ammonite zones and normal palaeomagnetic chron upper M5. A c. 30-cm-thick bed is identified as the equivalent of the Faraoni Level, based on its position within the Pseudothurmannia mortilleti Subzone, the composition of its ammonite fauna and the peak of a minor positive trend in the [delta]13 Cbulk record. Microfacies and geochemical proxies compare well with those of the southeastern part of the Trento Plateau and indicate palaeoceanographic continuity along the eastern margin of the plateau. The abundances of radiolarians and nannoconids suggest a turnover in the trophic structure from eutrophic conditions around the Faraoni Level equivalent to oligotrophic conditions. Low organic matter and sulphur content and frequent bioturbation indicate a well-oxygenated environment. Ammonite diversity and life-habitat groups document the influence of sea level on the plateau: while epi- and mesopelagic ammonites occur commonly during sea-level highstands, all life-habitat groups become reduced during a sea-level lowstand in the Spathicrioceras seitzi and P. ohmi subzones. The Faraoni event is heralded by a faunal turnover expressed as the diversification of epipelagic ammonites. Palaeoenvironmental conditions along the eastern margin of the Trento Plateau during the Faraoni event contrast with those of the organic-rich black shales in the west. A re-evaluation of the depositional model based on the new results suggests a general water depth of 300-500 m for the plateau. The severe reduction of mesopelagic ammonites during the sea-level lowstand indicates a shallowing towards the epi-/mesopelagic boundary. During the Faraoni event, the eastern areas of the Trento Plateau were located at the upper limit of the oxygen-minimum layer and were thus only occasionally affected by oxygen depletion, whereas the western areas were located well within the upper part of the oxygen-depleted layer.

Opis:
Metriorhynchid crocodylomorphs were an important component in shallow marine ecosystems during the Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous in the European archipelago. While metriorhynchids are well known from western European countries, their central and eastern European record is poor and usually limited to isolated or fragmentary specimens which often hinders a precise taxonomic assignment. However, isolated elements such as tooth crowns, have been found to provide informative taxonomic identifications. Here we describe two isolated metriorhynchid tooth crowns from the upper Valanginian (Lower Cretaceous) of the Štramberk area, Czech Republic. Our assessment of the specimens, including multivariate analysis of dental measurements and surface enamel structures, indicates that the crowns belong to two distinct geosaurin taxa (Plesiosuchina? indet. and Torvoneustes? sp.) with different feeding adaptations. The specimens represent the first evidence of Metriorhynchidae from the Czech Republic and some of the youngest metriorhynchid specimens worldwide.
