Maternal behavior of a short-tailed shrew (Blarina brevicauda)

Opis:
The maternal behavior of a short-tailed shrew (Blarina brevicauda) in simulated natural conditions was described. The female shrew was seen to constrict the nest openings during lactation as well as reinforce the nesting material. Her activity, measured as time out of the nest, increased during pregnancy and increased greatly during lactation. The shrew retrieved her pups both by dragging and with a behavior similar to caravanning. Maternal behavior ceased completely on day 22, the time of weaning.

Opis:
The quantum-defect-orbital method has been reformulated in order to include both relativistic effects and the electron correlation described by a core polarization potential. All quantities appearing in this formulation may be evaluated analytically. A comparison with experimental results demonstrates, on one hand, significance of the relativity-correlation corrections and, on the other, inadequacy of the relativistic quantum-defect-orbital approach when indirect relativistic effects are important, i.e. when atoms contain closed shells of d electrons.

Opis:
The paper presents the technical problems related to the electrical control and command system (ECC system) for the plasma focus installation IPF-4/5A having the following main parameters: 1 MA plasma current and 40 kJ energy stored at 20 kV charging voltage. The ECC system applies 23 interlocked logical commands, acquires and processes 28 logical states, acquires, processes and displays continuously the main slow-varying signals coming from IPF-4/5A subassemblies. All the plasma focus installation operational sequences are governed by strict hard and soft interlocking using in parallel two control and command systems: one based on PC-control methods and another based on classical control techniques.

Opis:
Background: Feeding intolerance is common in critically ill patients and can lead to malnutrition. Prokinetic agents may be used to enhance the uptake of nutrition. However, the evidence on the effectiveness and safety of prokinetic agents is sparse, and there is a lack of data on their use in intensive care units (ICU). Methods: We will conduct an international 14-day inception cohort study of 1000 acutely admitted adult ICU patients. Data will be collected from ICU admission and daily during ICU stay for up to 90 days. The primary outcome will be the proportion of ICU patients who receive prokinetic agents. Secondary outcomes include mortality, days alive without life support, days alive out of ICU, days alive out of hospital (all within 90 days) and the number of patients with one or more serious adverse events. Results: We will present data on the use of prokinetic agents descriptively and use Cox regressions with death and ICU discharge as competing events to evaluate the association between patient characteristics and the use of prokinetic agents. We will use extended Cox models with time-varying covariates and linear regression models to assess the associations between the use of prokinetic agents and the secondary outcomes. Conclusion: The outlined international cohort study will provide valuable epidemiological data on the use of prokinetic agents in adult, acutely admitted ICU patients.

Opis:
Nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT) methylates nicotinamide to form 1-methylnicotinamide (MNA) using S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) as the methyl donor. The complexity of the role of NNMT in healthy and disease states is slowly being elucidated and provides an indication that NNMT may be an interesting therapeutic target for a variety of diseases including cancer, diabetes, and obesity. Most inhibitors of NNMT described to date are structurally related to one or both of its substrates. In the search for structurally diverse NNMT inhibitors, an mRNA display screening technique was used to identify macrocyclic peptides which bind to NNMT. Several of the cyclic peptides identified in this manner show potent inhibition of NNMT with IC$_{50}$ values as low as 229 nM. The peptides were also found to downregulate MNA production in cellular assays. Interestingly, substrate competition experiments reveal that these cyclic peptide inhibitors are noncompetitive with either SAM or NA indicating they may be the first allosteric inhibitors reported for NNMT.
