Opis:
The new spalacotheriid “symmetrodontan” Cifellitherium suderlandicum gen. et sp. nov. from the Barremian–Aptian of the Balve locality in northwestern Germany is the first record of spalacotheriids in Central Europe. The new taxon is based on one lower and two upper molars. Cifellitherium is similar to Spalacotherium, but differs by smaller stylocone and larger paraststyle on the upper molars, and a labially interrupted cingulid on the lower molar. The new dryolestid Minutolestes submersus gen. et sp. nov. is based on one lower and two upper molars of small size. Phylogenetic analysis revealed it as sister taxon of the clade comprising Laolestes, Krebsotherium, Dryolestes, and Guimarotodus. A dryolestid mandible with unevenly rooted molars and extremely worn down teeth cannot be attributed to Minutolestes submersus gen. et sp. nov. due to possessing molars twice as large in size. The mandible is assigned to a new dryolestid taxon, Beckumia sinemeckelia gen. et sp. nov., and has the dental formula 3i, 1c, 4p, 8m and a fully reduced Meckel’s groove. The mandible lacks any trace of a coronoid or splenial. In the phylogenetic analysis, it appears as sister taxon of a clade comprising Achyrodon, Phascolestes, Crusafontia, and Hercynodon. The new mammals are the stratigraphically youngest European representatives of their clades. The late survival of Beckumia sinemeckelia gen. et sp. nov. and Minutolestes submersus gen. et sp. nov. is possibly the result of isolated evolution in an Early Cretaceous island environment. This finding of new spalacotheriid and dryolestid mammals from Central Europe adds to an emerging paleobiogeographic pattern that Europe was distinct from Asia in the constituents of mammalian faunas during the Barremian–Aptian.

Although large international studies have found consistent patterns of sex differences in personality traits among adults (i.e., women scoring higher on most facets), less is known about cross-cultural sex differences in adolescent personality and the role of culture and age in shaping them. The present study examines NEO Personality Inventory-3 (NEO-PI-3, McCrae, Costa, & Martin, 2005) informant ratings of adolescents from 23 cultures (N = 4,850) and investigates culture and age as sources of variability in sex differences of adolescents’ personality. The effect for Neuroticism (with females scoring higher than males) begins to take on its adult form around age 14. Girls score higher on Openness to Experience and Conscientiousness at all ages between 12 and 17 years. A more complex pattern emerges for Extraversion and Agreeableness, although by age 17, sex differences for these traits are highly similar to those observed in adulthood. Cross-sectional data suggest that (1) with advancing age, sex differences found in adolescents increasingly converge towards adult patterns with respect to both direction and magnitude; (2) girls display sex-typed personality traits at an earlier age than boys; and (3) the emergence of sex differences was similar across culture. Practical implications of the present findings are discussed.

Opis:
Auf der in den späten Zwanzigerjahren des letzten Jahrhunderts entdeckten bandkeramischen Siedlungsstelle Hollenstedt, „Salzberg“, wurde im Rahmen einer geophysikalischen Prospektion ein altneolithisches Erdwerk festgestellt. Es besteht aus einem halbkreisförmigen, breiten Graben und einem auf der Innenseite parallel verlaufenden mutmaßlichen Palisadengräbchen; die Lage eines Walles ist zu erschließen. Vier Standorte bandkeramischer Häuser sind in der vom Dorfgraben umschlossenen Innenfläche durch Pfostenstandspuren erkennbar, acht weitere lassen sich durch mutmaßliche Längsgruben wahrscheinlich machen. Aus dem südlichen Niedersachsen sind mittlerweile neun bandkeramische Erdwerke bekannt, die in formaler Hinsicht bemerkenswerte Unterschiede aufweisen und einst offenbar verschiedene Funktionen erfüllten.

In 2012, fi eldwork recommenced at the Altheim earthwork, discovered more than a century ago. The investigation in its immediate environs revealed a second ditched enclosure from the Altheim period, south-east of the previously known structure. The two enclosures are spatially related to one another. It was found that several decimetres of soil have been eroded during the last hundred years in the area of the north earthwork; the very substance of both monuments is acutely threatened. The fi rst radiocarbon datings, carried out on samples of domestic animal bone, allow both enclosures to be dated to the 37th/36th century BC and suggest a temporal sequence of the ditches. Certain earlier observations, namely the high proportion of arrowheads among the flaked stone tools and the very low proportion of bones from wild animals, were confi rmed by the new excavation. The southwest-northeast orientation of the structures’ long axes permits an archaeoastronomical interpretation: knowledge obtained from the observation of natural phenomena was transferred to architecture. The new investigation sheds further doubt on the interpretation of the enclosures as fortifi cations.

Opis:
The landscapes on both sides of the lower course of the Tyrawka River, a tributary of the San, cannot be regarded as favourable for settlement. Nevertheless, a dense concentration of archaeological sites has been recorded. A reason for this observation might be seen in the local deposits of salt and copper, exploitation of which would have compensated the environmental disadvantages. Magnetometer survey has been conducted on part of a Linienbandkeramik (Linear Pottery Culture) settlement site close to one of the local salt springs.
