Opis:
The paper offers a secondary analysis from a grounded theory doctoral study that reconsiders its “grounded systemic design” (Mitchell, 2005, 2007). While theorists across multiple disciplines fiercely debate the ontological implications of Niklas Luhmann’s autopoietic systems theory (Deflem 1998; Graber and Teubner 1998; King and Thornhill 2003; Mingers 2002; Neves 2001; O’Byrne 2003; Verschraegen 2002, for example), few investigators have yet to adopt his core constructs empirically (see Gregory, Gibson and Robinson 2005 for an exception). Glaser’s (1992, 2005) repeated concerns for grounded theorists to elucidate a “theoretical code” has provided an additional entry point into this project of integrating grounded theory with Luhmann’s abstract conceptual thinking about how global society operates. The author argues that this integration of methodology and systems thinking provides an evolution of grounded theory – rather than its ongoing “erosion” as Greckhamer and Koro-Ljungberg (2005) have feared – and a transportable set of methodological and analytical constructs is presented as a basis for further grounded study.

Opis:
Whereas technology has been the focus of much discourse in both public theatres and sociological arenas, comparatively little attention has been given to the study of the ways that people actually deal with technology as realms of human knowing and acting.Working from a symbolic interactionist perspective (Mead 1934; Blumer 1969) and drawing on classical Greek scholarship as well as some interim sources, this paper addresses technology as a humanly engaged process.Attending to human group life as "something in the making" and focusing on the activities entailed in encountering, using, developing, promoting, obtaining, and resisting instances of technology, this paper outlines a research agenda intended to foster situated (i.e. ethnographic) examinations of technologically-engaged, humanly enacted realities. It also serves as a reference point for assembling and comparing studies of the technology process that deal with this set of activities.

Greenspace can promote health via diverse pathways. A common approach to assessing greenspace exposure is to estimate vegetation availability within buffers surrounding locations where people reside or spend time. However, no clear framework for informed buffer selection exists, and choices made show considerable heterogeneity, impeding evidence synthesis and causal inference. In this Personal View conducted by an interdisciplinary panel of experts, we aimed to establish a framework for informed buffer selection for epidemiological studies on greenspace. We began by reviewing available approaches for the selection of buffer types, which range from single fixed-location approaches to high-resolution mobility-based activity-space approaches, as well as different buffer sizes. We then summarised the determinants of buffer type and size selection including health outcomes and underlying mechanisms, study population, contextual factors, and data characteristics. Finally, based on these determinants, we developed recommendations for future research. Buffer type and size selection should be hypothesis driven, reflecting presumed greenspace-health mechanisms. Buffer selection should target activity-based approaches where feasible, and multiple buffer sizes should be tested. Overall, the assessment of greenspace exposure should shift from ad-hoc approaches to personalised, multiscale, and context-specific methods. We call for standardising and reporting the rationale for buffer selection to minimise bias and enhance comparability and evidence synthesis across studies.

Most eukaryotic microbial biodiversity is undescribed, and most species might be morphologically indistinguishable. Notable exceptions are so-called flagship species which are highly conspicuous and can therefore be used to address biogeographical questions. Here we describe Hyalosphenia papilio subsp. paynei, an arcellinid testate amoeba (Amoebozoa; Arcellinida; Hyalospheniidae) from wet hollows in two Sphagnum peatlands, one in Wales and one in Ireland. Phylogenetic analysis based on Cytochrome Coxidase subunit I (COI) sequencing places it within the lineage A of the H. papilio complex, but it differs from all 13 known H. papilio genetic lineages by its very distinctive, wider than long, morphology. The fact that such a conspicuous taxon was never reported in hundreds of studies published on Holarctic Sphagnum peatlands since Leidy’s description of H. papilio in 1874 suggests that this subspecies has not dispersed and survived beyond Britain and Ireland. Furthermore its genetic similarity to H. papilio s. str. suggests that it has recently evolved. The discovery of this new taxon calls for a more detailed analysis of the morphological, ecological and molecular diversity of the H. papilio species complex.
