Opis:
This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) oil cake on pasta processing and the functional characteristics of the end product. The pasta produced from wheat flour fortified with 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, and 15% (w/w) sesame oil cake showed a significant increase in total protein (i.e., ranging from 12.3 and 16.0 g/100 g), lipid (i.e., 3-fold) and crude fiber (i.e., 0.58 to 0.91 g/100 g) contents with the increasing addition of sesame oil cake. Consistograph tests showed that the pressure maximum decreased significantly from 267.2 kPa for the wheat flour dough (control) to 157.6 kPa upon the addition of 15% (w/w) sesame oil cake to wheat flour. Drop-in pressure after 250 and 450 s was lower for the control sample than for those containing 5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, and 15% (w/w) sesame oil cake. The elasticity value for the control dough was 500.1 Pa, and it was reduced to 392.3 Pa with the addition of 15% (w/w) sesame oil cake to wheat flour resulting also in a significant reduction in the extensibility. The pasta from the flour blend with 7.5% (w/w) sesame oil cake exhibited the highest cooking loss, at 5.40 g/100 g. Sensorial evaluation of the flavor and stickiness of pasta produced from the flour blends containing up to 10% (w/w) of sesame oil cake was satisfactory and recommended to open the door for industrial utilization of such valuable and nutritious by-products. Sesame components and gluten network interactions are believed to play a key role in modifying pasta’s functional characteristics and require more investigation.

The Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification) Regulations of Kenya adapt The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW Convention) and the Standard Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW Code) for Seafarers. The STCW Convention and Code defines the quality standards at a minimum requirement as the harmonized threshold for contracting parties, which includes Kenya. Educational Institutions in Kenya primarily uses Quality Management Systems in application of quality to education and training. This is however contrary to the requirements of the STCW Convention and Code for institutions engaged in Maritime Education and Training. The paper focusses in assessing the extent of non-compliance, the circumstantial challenges and thereafter proposes a framework to address challenges in implementing Quality Standard Systems.

Opis:
The feasibility of removing sulfur from real light gas oil using inorganic liquids (NaOH, Ca(OH)2 and HCl) at various concentrations assisted with ultrasonication was investigated in a continuous flow setup. Experimental results showed that at the optimum operating time (40 min), 68% of sulfur was removed under mild conditions using 10 wt. % NaOH. Ultrasonication not only facilitated sulfur removal but also improved gas oil properties by decreasing density and viscosity by 1.40 and 4.42%, respectively, while the cetane number (CN) was increased by 7.0%. Solute selectivity (S) depending on sulfur mole fraction (xS) was correlated using StatPlus 6.7.1.0 software and the following values have been obtained: S = 53.869e–2.552xs, and S = 29.573 – 41.878xs for mixtures of 10% Ca(OH)2 + S-compound + oil, and 10% NaOH + S-compound + oil, respectively. The correlation coefficients (R2) for the above equations were 0.9813 and 0.9611, respectively. An empirical correlation related to sulfur removal as a function of processing time and solvent concentration was found with R2 = 0.956. The results of the present work confirmed the feasibility of employing the hybrid method of ultrasonication with using alkaline liquids for sulfur removal.

Opis:
ObjectivesComputer workstations are considered a potential workplace hazard. This study sought to evaluate computer workstation ergonomics in a university office environment, and to determine its relationship with musculoskeletal (MS) and visual symptoms reported by employees.Material and MethodsThis was a cross-sectional observational study. A total of 231 university employees were recruited using a stratified random sampling technique. By means of direct observation, computer workstations were evaluated using the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Ergonomic Computer Workstation Evaluation Checklist. In addition, the participants reported MS and visual symptoms during the past week and 12 months by completing questionnaires.ResultsSeveral ergonomic deficiencies in computer workstations were identified. Seating, working area, and keyboard and input devices had the most documented deficits. A significant proportion of employees reported various MS symptoms during the past 12 months. The most affected body parts were the shoulders (37%), the lower back (34%), and the neck (29%). The most prevalent visual symptom was tired eyes (68%). Logistic regression analysis indicated that MS symptoms, such as ache, pain and discomfort, were significantly associated with the total scores on the OSHA components. Deficits in monitor ergonomics and its placement, particularly the presence of glare reflected on the screen, were also associated with reported visual symptoms. Independent variables, such as gender, age, employment duration, job type, daily computer work hours, and work pattern, reliably predicted the participants’ reported experience of various MS and visual symptoms.ConclusionsBoth MS and visual symptoms are associated with deficits in computer workstation ergonomics. Appropriate strategies, work practices, and preventive measures are needed to eliminate occupational hazards associated with computer workstations.

Opis:
According to United Nations reports, natural disasters caused, worldwide, approximately 100,000 deaths and affected 175 million people each year between 2004 and 2013. To reduce those numbers, countries around the globe have made specific arrangements enabling them to warn the population about imminent disasters, in order to evacuate the area in due time. But providing such warnings in areas where no Internet access is available poses a great challenge. In this paper, we proposed a method to transmit early warning messages via UMTS cellular networks, while relying on spare extensions of control channels (FACH). The results obtained are validate based on their comparison with theoretical considerations and are also benchmarked against the 3GPP standard. The results show that messages may be sent faster than with the use of the 3GPP standard.

Opis:
Objective: Lepidium sativum, commonly known as chandrashoor in India, has been used in the Indian traditional medicine system for the treatment of various diseases. The present study was undertaken to investigate the hypoglycemic effect of Lepidium sativum in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Materials and methods: Thirty (30) adult male Wistar rats weighing 157±51g were randomly assigned to five groups of six rats each as Normal control, Diabetic control, Diabetics supplemented with Lepidium sativum extract, Diabetics treated with insulin, and Normal rats supplemented with Lepidium sativum. All rats were fed with a normal laboratory diet, nutrient rich pellets, and had free access to drinking water. The rats were injected with streptozotocin at a dose of 45 mg/kg body weight intraperitoneally to induce diabetes. The extracts were then given orally to different groups of rats at a dose of 20mg/kg body weight for 16 days. Thereafter, the rats were sacrificed, and blood samples collected by cardiac puncture were used for the determination of Glucose, Creatinine, Alkaline Phosphatase, Cholesterol, Malondialdehyde level, % DPPH, and FRAP content. Results: Administration of lepidium extract showed a significant reduction in glucose, creatinine, and alkaline phosphatase levels. Elevated cholesterol level was restored approximately to normal; a significant decrease in malondialdehyde levels was also observed compared to diabetic controls. Conclusion: Lepidium sativum extract shows efficacy in the prevention and management of diabetes mellitus and its related complications.

Opis:
Introduction: Post-mastectomy seroma formation is a challenging sequela which has a negative impact on patient recovery and quality of life. Aim: We aim to publicize our technique of clavipectoral fascia re-closure and to assess its efficacy in reducing the incidence of seroma formation. Methods: This is a prospective randomized controlled trial, conducted in South Cancer institute, Assiut University, Egypt. It included 84 breast cancer patients who were randomly divided into two groups: a control group (n = 44) and a fascia suture group (n = 40). The patients were followed up until drain removal and then to 3 months after surgery. Results: The fascia suture group showed significantly shorter duration of drain removal with a significant reduction in the total amount of drained fluid and the amount of drained fluid 1 week postoperatively. One patient in the fascia suture group developed Grade 2–3 seroma vs. 7 in the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Clavipectoral fascia suture technique is a simple and effective method for reducing seroma formation after mastectomy in breast cancer patients and is advisable in patients at a high risk for seroma formation.

Opis:
Recent research indicates that disrupted sleeping and eating patterns along with ageing can contribute to the development of diabetes mellitus (DM) via effects on circadian rhythms and metabolic control. The use of anti- -DM drugs alone is insufficient to achieve control of the reduction in β-cell function, insulin resistance, inflammatory mediation, oxidative stress and the DM-related complications. To prevent micro- and macrovascular DM complications, researchers are exploring the therapeutic potential of melatonin, a hormone secreted from the pineal gland with peak at night-time. We searched the Cochrane Library, PubMed and Google Scholar databases for relevant articles. Review articles, clinical research and case studies about the impact of melatonin on DM complications, the anti-oxidant action of melatonin, anti-inflammatory action of melatonin and the combination of melatonin plus DM drugs were included in this review. One hundred three articles that met our selection criteria, published between November 2004 and January 2024 were analyzed. This review aims to summarize the literature regarding melatonin’s mechanisms of action and potential as a therapeutic option in the treatment of DM complications.
