Opis:
The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of oil pollution on geological-engineering properties of clay soils. Presented results prove that the difference in physical-chemical characteristics of water and oil substances results in unfavourable changes in geological-engineering parameters of the ground soil. Laboratory tests show that the range of change depends on the soil type and the pollutant content. Contaminated area should be then carefully examined when evaluated in the aspect of land development.

Opis:
Air-dried samples of glacial till were polluted in the laboratory with petrol and diesel oil. A comparative analysis of natural and contaminated material was made on the basis of mercury porosimetry measurements. The investigation revealed relatively slight changes in the pore space of the polluted samples, which were as sociated with adsorption of hydrocarbons onto the soil particles rather than with microstructural change. Introduction of non-polar organic fluid into soil pores did not cause rearrangement of the natural soil structure. Due to the initial air-dried state of the soil material, these findings pertain to unsaturated soils only. These results contribute to the crucial, but still poorly recognized problem of the engineering geology properties of organic contaminated soils.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań parametrów skurczalności oznaczonych wg norm polskiej PN-88/B-04481 i brytyjskiej BS1377: Part 2: 1990: 4.3 oraz wg wzoru korelacyjnego Krabbego z 1958 (Schultze, Muhs, 1967). Analizę przeprowadzono dla iłów mioplioceńskich, glin lodowcowych oraz mad z Warszawy, Mszczonowa i Płocka. Określono takie parametry skurczu, jak: granica skurczalności ws, skurcz objętościowy Vs, względny skurcz objętościowy Vp oraz przeprowadzono analizę ich zależności od parametrów wskaźnikowych gruntu. Najwyższe wartości granicy skurczalności i skurczu objętościowego (Vs i Vp) wykazały kolejno: iły mioplioceńskie > mady > gliny lodowcowe. Wartości granicy skurczalności wg normy brytyjskiej są niższe niż wg normy polskiej, a różnica wynosi ok. 1–4%. Granica skurczalności obliczona wg Krabbego znacznie odbiega i nie wykazuje jednolitej tendencji zróżnicowania w stosunku do pozostałych metod. Nie stwierdzono wiążących zależności funkcyjnych pomiędzy granicą skurczalności a zawartością frakcji iłowej oraz wskaźnikiem plastyczności. Stwierdzono zależności liniowe o wysokim współczynniku korelacji pomiędzy skurczem objętościowym (Vs i Vp) a wilgotnością gruntu w0, przedziałem skurczu, wskaźnikiem plastyczności (Ip) i zawartością frakcji iłowej. Wyznaczono wzór na względny skurcz objętościowy w zależności od parametrów łatwo i standardowo wyznaczanych w badaniach geologiczno-inżynierskich gruntów – wilgotności i wskaźnika plastyczności: Vp = 0,629w0 + 0,191Ip–1,659 ±3,166; (R = 0,968).
The article presents the results of shrinkage parameters research according to Polish standard PN-88B-04481, British standard BS1377: Part 2: 1990: 6.3 and Krabbe's equation from 1958 (Schultze, Muhs, 1967). Mio-Pliocene clays, glacial tills and alluvial soils were tested, as the most typical subsoils in Poland. Shrinkage limit w/s, volumetric shrinkage Vs, relative volumetric shrinkage Vp were determined and correlated with soils properties such as moisture content, shrinkage range, plasticity index and clay content. No significant relationships between shrinkage limit and clay content or plasticity index were found. Linear regression of high correlation coefficient was found between volumetric shrinkage Vs, Vp and moisture content, shrinkage range, plasticity index, clay content . However, the most important result of the analyses was the determination of the relationship between volumetric shrinkage Vp and moisture content (w/o) and plasticity index (Ip) — parameters commonly tested in geological engineering practice: Vp = 0,629w/o + 0,191Ip-1,659 ± 3,166; (R = 0,968).

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań mikrostruktury aluwialnych gruntów ilastych z terenu lotniska wojskowego w Królewie Malborskim, poddanych wieloletniemu zanieczyszczeniu in situ substancjami ropopochodnymi. Dokonano porównawczej analizy mikrostruktury gruntu czystego (NS) i zanieczyszczonego (SR). Badania przeprowadzono z zastosowaniem skaningowego mikroskopu elektronowego (SEM) oraz programu STIMAN do ilościowej analizy zdjęć z SEM. Grunt NS charakteryzuje się ukierunkowaną mikrostrukturą turbulentną (mikrostrukturą fluidalną), zagregowaną i ciasno upakowaną masą ilastą oraz dominującymi kontaktami typu płaszczyzna-płaszczyzna (F-F) pomiędzy cząstkami i mikroagregatami. Natomiast grunt SR charakteryzuje się mikrostrukturą matrycową, występowaniem stref o luźnym upakowaniu i słabszym zagregowaniu masy ilastej oraz dominacją kontaktów typu płaszczyzna-krawędź (F-E). W gruncie zanieczyszczonym stwierdzono zmianę rozkładu wielkości i geometrii porów wyrażającą się wzrostem: porowatości, liczby porów, całkowitej i średniej powierzchni porów, całkowitego, średniego i minimalnego obwodu porów, średniej średnicy porów, liczby mezoporów, porów izometrycznych i szczelinowatych oraz spadkiem zawartości mikroporów i porów anizometrycznych.
The paper presents the results of the research on alluvial clay soils from military airport in Królewie Malborskie, polluted with hydrocarbons for a long period of time. Comparative microstructure analysis of polluted samples (SR) and non polluted reference samples (NS) has been conducted. The research was carried out using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and STIMAN software for a quantitative analysis based on SEM micrographs. NS soil is characterized by oriented, turbulent microstructure (fluidal microstructure) and aggregated, tightly packed clay mass. Face-to-face contacts (F-F) dominate between particles and microaggregates. SR soil is characterized by matrix microstructure less aggregated, with some zones of a loosely packed clay mass. Face-to-edge contacts (F-E) dominate between structural elements. It was found that the pore size distribution and pore geometry changed in SR soil. The increase of the following parameters was observed: porosity, pores number, total and average pores area, total, average and minimum pores perimeter, the average pores diameter, the number of mesopores, fissure and isometric pores; but the content of micropores and anisometric pores decreased.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań parametrów pęcznienia iłów neogeńskich serii poznańskiej z rejonu Mazowsza oraz iłów modelowych przygotowanych z bentonitu z Wyoming i kaolinitu z Sedlec. Określono parametry pęcznienia takie jak: zmodyfikowany wskaźnik swobodnego pęcznienia (MFSI) i współczynnik swobodnego pęcznienia (FSR) oraz przeprowadzono analizę ich zależności od chemizmu roztworu, składu mineralnego i zawartości frakcji iłowej. Ocena składu mineralnego gruntów naturalnych na podstawie współczynnika swobodnego pęcznienia FSR, zdefiniowanego jako stosunek objętości 10 g gruntu wysuszonego w 105°C po sedymentacji w roztworze 0,0025% NaCl do objętości osadu w nafcie, okazała się orientacyjna.
The paper presents the results of free swell measurements of Neogene clays and model clay mixtures composed of Wyoming bentonite and Sedlec kaolinite. Modified free swell index (MFSI) as well as free swell ratio (FSR) were determined and analyzed with respect to pore fluid chemistry, mineral composition and clay content. The FSR, defined as the ratio of the equilibrium sediment volume of 10-g oven dried soil in 0.0025% NaCl solution to that in kerosene, has proved to provide only a rough prediction of clay mineralogy in natural soils.

This paper presents the characteristics of the expansivity and quantitative prediction of heave of clay soils from Poland based on suction testing. 11 Neogene clays and 6 glacial tills, differing in genesis and plasticity, were analyzed to identify the expansive potential using eight empirical methods. The laboratory studies included measurements of soil-water characteristic curves and soil index properties. Data from water content, volume and suction measurements served to determine the suction compression index Ch and the suction-water content index Dh/Dw of the soils examined. The values of these indices are clearly dependent of the clay fraction content in tested soils. Compared with glacial tills, Neogene clays are expected to exhibit larger changes in volume due to changes in soil suction. Comparative results of the evaluation of expansivity suggest that the chosen classification methodologies provided consistent expansion ratings for glacial tills, while values for Neogene clays vary from low to very high. The lowest expansivity classes have been obtained from evaluation based on soil suction. The McKeen (1992) method has been adopted for calculations of the potential field heave of Neogene clays and glacial tills. In order to provide a rational estimation of expansive soil behavior, specialists should take into consideration the specific site and design features.

The revision of classification methodologies for determination of soil expansivity revealed that parameters most frequently used for this purpose are: the liquid limit, plasticity index and swelling parameters which also predominate in older systems of expansive soil assessment, regarded as classical. Seventy-nine soil samples, including Neogene clays and glaciall tills from Central Poland, with a wide range of plasticity were examined for a comparative analysis of soil expansivity with a use of eight empirical methods. The study revealed that Neogene clays are mostly highly and very highly expansive, while glacial tills exhibit low to medium expansivity. Compared to classifications considering soil mineralogy indicators, those correlated solely to Atterberg limits and related parameters were found to overestimate soil expansivity. It is evident that the classifications are in better agreement for glacial tills than for clays. The comparison of mineral composition measured and predicted from swelling tests yielded consistent results.

Opis:
This paper deals with the structural factors affecting shrinkage phenomena. Seventy eight soil samples were tested, including: Neogene (Mio-Pliocene) clays, glacial tills, clayey alluvial soils, bentonite, illitic clay and kaolinite. Destructed soils (remoulded samples) were compared with undisturbed soils (NNS). Analysis of shrinkage curves showed that the most hydrophilic clays and well-graded soils have the lowest void ratio and shrinkage limit. Shrinkage curves ofsilty and sandy soils are relatively plane with poorly differentiated shrinkage stages. For Neogene clays, shrinkage curves of remoulded samples are similar to the undisturbed ones. Both series of samples yielded similar final void ratio and shrinkage limit values. For alluvial soils and glacial tills, remoulded samples yielded a lower void ratio and higher shrinkage limit values than NNS samples. The results obtained showed that the soil fabric (natural preserved versus disturbed) does not influence shrinkage of Neogene clays while affects significantly shrinkage of alluvial soils and glacial tills. The statistical analysis revealed that there was no correlation between shrinkage limit and clay content or plastic index. A linear rela¬tionship was found between shrinkage limit and void ratio for clays as well as remoulded samples.
