Opis:
The potential of rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) peel as a low-cost adsorbent in an immobilized condition to remove Basic Fuchsin from aqueous solution was studied. The effect of initial dye concentration, contact time, pH and adsorbent dosage for the dye removal was studied at room temperature (26±2 °C). Infrared spectrum of rambutan peel indicates the presence of C–O, –OH and C=C functional groups. The adsorption rate was found to be high at the first 30 min and the process reached equilibrium after 3 h with more than 80% of dye being removed. The uptake of Basic Fuchsin was more promising at pH slightly above 7. The study of sorption model and kinetic model showed that the adsorption of Basic Fuchsin on rambutan peel conformed to the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetics with a high correlation coefficient, R,sup>2 > 0.98. This indicates the Basic Fuchsin adsorbs chemically on the heterogeneous surface of rambutan peel. The maximum adsorption capacity determined from the Langmuir isotherm was 108.696 mg/g. It seems that rambutan peel has the potential to substitute activated carbon as an alternative low-cost adsorbent in the treatment of the dye effluent.

Opis:
Aspergillus niger FBT1, a local extracellular strain for tannase production, was isolated from soil collected from Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve in Perak, Malaysia. This fungus strain was cultivated in an Erlenmeyer flask under a submerged fermentation system. Medium compositions play a very important role in enhancing enzyme production during fermentation. The production of tannase by A. niger FBT1 increased significantly (95%) when the medium compositions and various process parameters were optimized. Incubation for 72 hours (30EC, pH 7) in medium complemented with sodium nitrate was found optimal. Additional supplementation with tannic acid (2% w/v) as the sole carbon source strongly increased the yield of the enzyme.

Opis:
This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the $\bar{P}$ANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole $\bar{P}$ANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. The results are presented, and the time lines to construct the STT are described.

Opis:
We report a compact, all fiber, 150 ps fiber master oscillator power amplifier operating at 1064 nm that has the ability of producing a maximum average output power of 2.16 W with peak power as high as 10 kW. The output from the master oscillator power amplifier is spliced with a highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber, generating a supercontinuum with an average power of 250 mW at repetition rate of 1 MHz and spectrum bandwidth spanning from 600 to 1700 nm. The developed supercontinuum system is used to detect the presence of heavy metal contaminants in water by a simple light transmittance method to ensure that the water is free from heavy metal contaminants and safe for consumption. The supercontinuum laser source was shone onto a water sample with a detector placed at another end in order to measure the transmitted supercontinuum light. By measuring the amount of light attenuated at particular wavelength, the concentration of heavy metal contaminants present in the water sample could be determined.

This white paper briefly summarizes the importance of the study of relativistic cosmic rays, both as a constituent of our Universe, and through their impact on stellar and galactic evolution. The focus is on what can be learned over the coming decade through ground-based gamma-ray observations over the 20 GeV to 300 TeV range.

Opis:
We conducted an experimental search for η'-mesic nuclei, bound systems of an η' meson and a nucleus, in $^{12}C(p, dp)$ reactions. We measured the missing mass in the (p, d) reaction to obtain the mass spectrum of the reaction product near the η' emission threshold. Forward-emitted deuterons were momentum-analyzed in the FRS of GSI. We installed a nearly 4π detector WASA near the $^{12}C$ target to effectively select formation and decay of the η'-mesic nuclei. We are presently finalizing the analysis.
