Opis:: The spatial characterisation o f soil environment parameterised according to laboratory analyses belongs to the most problematical issues of soil cartography. The geo-informatic system presented in the paper is one o f few Polish solutions to this problem. It consists of a soil sample bank and a soil cartographic database, in which soil quality parameters are being transformed into a cartographic presentation. Resulting cartographic applications are redox resistance maps, maps of surface area o f soil types and maps of hydro-physical features of the soil environment.

Opis:: The development of agricultural production at the territory of Kurpiowska Valley has imparted a significant effect on evolution of the structure of land management, being expressed by expansion of cultivated areas through cutting out of forests and drainage of valley swampy territories. It brought about the disturbance of ecological equilibrium in this area, expressed by shrinkage of forest and bog areas, lowering the level of ground waters, decrease of water-retaining capacity of the area and by over-drying of grassland edges and near-forest fragments of arable land. The conducted studies have revealed that there is a possibility to recover ecological equilibrium in the structure of land management within the Kurpiowska Valley through seeding of low-fertile sandy soils, excluding the soils predestined to ploughing, from meadow-pastural utilization and the preference for cattle breeding in shallow cow sheds.

The International Cartographic Association (ICA) was founded in 1959 by the representatives of 13 countries as a result of an initiative of Swedish cartographers. Since then this important and useful organization has been steadily growing in the number of participating countries (79 today) as well as developing the range of its activities. Poland became its member forty years ago, in July 1964, at the 2nd General Assembly in London. It is represented by the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography. In 1976 Polish National Committee for International Cartographic Association was founded at the Institute to support Polish cooperation with the ICA. Today the Committee consists of 24 representatives of various offices, scientific institutes, higher schools and organizations related to cartography. Since 1964 Polish cartographers have been taking active part in all ICA activities. It is especially evident during biannual International Cartographic Conferences (table 1). At each of them (except the 4th Conference in New Delhi in 1967) Polish representatives presented their papers (the largest number, 10, in Warsaw in 1982 and Beijing in 2001) and posters (the largest number, 10, in Ottawa in 1999). Numerous Polish publications were presented at exhibitions accompanying International Cartographic Conferences. The 11th International Cartographic Conference in the summer of 1982 was a major challenge for Polish cartographers. Organized in difficult conditions of martial law it was nevertheless regarded as one of the best prepared and most fruitful by its 193 foreign participants from 37 countries. They were particularly impressed with cartographic exhibitions, including the biggest to date exhibition of cartography of the host country, which included 812 items (117 atlases among them). At the last two conferences Polish panoramic plans of Venice and Berlin were awarded the best urban maps, while a Polish satellite image map of Karkonosze Mts. won in the category of satellite maps. Since 1993, when the Conferences' program included Barbara Petchenik Children's Map Competition, Poland has always been represented in it and 4 Polish pupils have been among the winners. Polish input to the efforts of particular commissions and working groups is varied. In some commissions Polish cartographers have been active members, or even leaders, since the very beginning; in other they participate only sporadically. The Commission on Cartographic Communication, founded in 1972 as an initiative of Professor Lech Ratajski of Warsaw University and led by him until his death in 1977 was one of the more dynamic. Between 1980-1984 Polish scientists headed two commissions: Professor Andrzej Ciotkosz (The Institute of Geodesy and Cartography) was the chairman of the Commission on Thematic Mapping by the Aid of Remote Sensing, while Professor Bogodar Winid (Warsaw University) was the chairman of the Commission on National and Regional Planning Cartography. Since 1999 Professor Ewa Krzywicka-Blum (Wroclaw Academy of Agriculture) has headed the Commission on Gender and Cartography, which investigates specific problems of under-represented groups. Other commissions in which Polish scientists have been active include the Commission on Definition, Classification and Standardization of Cartographic Terms, the Commission on Map Production Technology, the Commission on Visualization, the Commission on Maps and Graphics for Blind and Visually-Impaired People and the Commission on Theoretical Cartography. Achievements of several Polish scientists have been recognized by the international cartographic society. Professor Lech Ratajski was a Vice-President of the International Cartographic Association in the years 1972-1977; after his death Professor Andrzej Ciołkosz held that post until 1982. Professors Stanisław Pietkiewicz (1982) and Andrzej Ciołkosz (2003) also became Honorary Fellows of the ICA. A certain weakness of Polish participation lies in the fact that it is limited to a relatively small group. However gradually more and more young cartographers and specialists from related disciplines are joining in, better prepared to take up the challenges of the 21st century.

Do wyznaczenia obszarów należących do tych kategorii opracowano model diagnostyczny uwzględniający najważniejsze kryteria: potencjał produkcyjny gleb określony przez typ i gatunek gleby, przydatność rolniczą gleb wyrażoną kompleksami rolniczej przydatności, zasobność wodną siedlisk sparametryzowaną średnią sumą opadów atmosferycznych, użytkowe funkcje terenu: rolnicza, ochronna i pozaprodukcyjna.
Paper presented the methodological principles and rules of land classification for cultivation of energy crops in Poland as well as the diagnostic model that enables to develop the algorithms of spatial data processing and to generate the computer maps. Five categories of land usefulness were assumed: - concerning the soil-habitat conditions fulfilling cultivation requirements of the energy crops, - with limitation of the water factor and purposefulness of applying the irrigation, - with the priority to preserve the protective functions of the terrain limiting cultivation conditions of the energy crops, - on the areas of working surfaces or dumping grounds and on the polluted, marginal soils, - on the grouns usable to energy plants' cultivation, but with a priority provided for other agricultural crops. To delimit the areas included into above categories a diagnostic model was developed considering the most important criteria: - productivity potential of the grounds determined by type and kind of the soil, - agricultural usefulness of the soils expressed by cultivation usability complexes, - water abundance of the habitats parametrized by annual rainfall sum, - usable functions of the terrain: agricultural, protective, non-productive ones.

W tym celu w IA PAN Lublin i IMUZ Falenty zbudowano system badań i prezentacji wyników składający się z trzech kompatybilnych członów: 1) przygotowania ogólnej koncepcji, zebrania materiału badawczego i przygotowania geodanych, 2) opracowania metody badań stacjonarnych (laboratoryjnych) w celu uzyskania parametrów niezbędnych do obliczeń modelowych identyfikujących badane zjawisko, 3) skonstruowania systemu informatycznego łączącego przetwarzanie danych jednostkowych (atrybutów) z geodanymi oraz generującego mapy wynikowe. Postępowanie przedstawiono na przykładzie doskonalenia na naukowych podstawach oceny potrzeb wodnych melioracji gleb ornych w Polsce. W tym celu zebrano próbki gleb z 1000 reprezentacyjnych profili gleb ornych, wykonano w tych próbkach niezbędne analizy, wyliczono wartości parametrów do jednostkowej ewaluacji gleb, skonstruowano bazę danych glebowo-kartograficznych z cyfrową mapą gleb i oprogramowaniem agregującym gleby według modeli ich waloryzacji oraz generującym mapy wynikowe.
The content of the paper aims at presentation of possible ways used to create the system solutionswhich support answering to questions, resulting from practical needs. Those issues are discussed using the example of water melioration issues. For that purpose the Institute of Agrophysics of Polish Academy of Science (IA PAS) in Lublin and the Institute for Land Reclamation and Grassland Farming (IMUZ) in Falenty have developed the system of research works and presentation of results, which consists of three compatible components: 1. Development of the general idea, collection of research material and geoodata preparation, 2. Development of the method of laboratory tests in order to determine parameters required for model calculations, which identify analysed phenomena, 3. Development of an IT system, which combines unit (attribute) data processing with geodata and generates resulting maps. Implementation of works, has been presented using the example of improving the scientific estimation of drainage needs of arable soils in Poland. For that purpose, soil samples were collected for 1000 representative profiles of arable soils. Required analyses of those soil samples were performed, values of parameters were calculated for the needs of unit evaluation of soils. The soil-and-cartographic database was developed together with the digital map of soils and computer software, which aggregates soils according to valorisation models and which generates the final resulting maps.

Opis:: Zmiany zachodzące w ostatnich latach w polskim górnictwie węgla kamiennego mają także istotny wpływ na warunki prowadzonej eksploatacji i stosowane technologie. Znaczne ograniczenie inwestycji, szczególnie w obszarze robót udostępniających, spowodowało, że wyczerpują się zasoby węgla znajdujące się w obrębie udostępnionych poziomów eksploatacyjnych. Powoduje to, że wkrótce w niektórych kopalniach konieczne może być ograniczenie eksploatacji ze względu na brak dostępu do udostępnionych złóż węgla. Część złóż tych kopalń znajduje się bowiem poniżej obecnego, udostępnionego poziomu eksploatacji. W wielu przypadkach zasoby te są bardzo atrakcyjne z ekonomicznego i technologicznego punktu widzenia. Jednym ze sposób rozwiązania tego problemu jest wprowadzenie eksploatacji pod poziomowej. Polega ona na wybieraniu pokładów znajdujących się poniżej poziomu udostępnienia. Wiąże się to jednak z wieloma problemami, głównie transportowymi i wentylacyjnymi. W artykule omówiono sposób eksploatacji podpoziomowej oraz przedstawiono aktualną sytuację polskiego górnictwa węgla kamiennego. Omówiono także proces decyzyjny przy wyborze modelu eksploatacyjnego.
Recent changes taking place in polish coal mining industry have significant influence on exploitation conditions and implemented technologies. Significant limitations in CAPEX in last years, especially in development work, caused resources depletion within available exploitation levels. This can lead to risks concerned with reducing coal extraction due to lack of access to coal resources since some of the resources are located below exploitation level. In many cases the coal resources are very beneficial in economic and technological terms. One way of sorting out the problem is to implement sublevel extraction – it assumes extracting the deposit below exploitation level. However, it deals with many different issues in the area of transporting and ventilation. The subject of the article deals with cases of sublevel extraction, presenting current status in polish coal mining sector. The decision process in the area of exploitation model was discussed as well.

Opis:: W związku ze staraniami o wydanie nowego atlasu narodowego Polski i perspektywą wykorzystania doświadczeń innych krajów przy jego opracowaniu, autorzy wybrali i przeanalizowali pięć opublikowanych w ostatnim ćwierćwieczu atlasów państw europejskich: Szwecji, Hiszpanii, Niemiec, Ukrainy i Rosji oraz w celach porównawczych także Atlas Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej z lat 1993-1997. Porównano ich formę edytorską, udział map, diagramów, fotografii i tekstów, przede wszystkim zaś strukturę tematyczną oraz wyróżniono charakterystyczne indywidualne cechy, a wyniki badań zestawiono w tabeli i unaoczniono w formie diagramów. W podsumowaniu zwrócono uwagę na zaobserwowane w tej dziedzinie tendencje oraz problemy, przed jakimi stoją twórcy współczesnych atlasów narodowych.
For over ten years now, attempts to publish a new up-to-date national atlas have been made in Poland. When preparing the concept for the atlas, it is reasonable to base it not only on our own experience (two such atlases have been published so far, one in the years 1973-1978 and one in 1993-1997), but also on the experience of other countries where in recent years some worth noting outstanding national atlases have been published. Having this in mind, the authors have selected and analyzed in detail five atlases of European countries published after 1990 and compared them with the last national atlas of Poland. The following atlases have been selected for analysis: the atlas of Sweden (1990-1996, 12 English version volumes), the atlas of Spain (1995-1999, 5 volumes), Germany (2000-2006, 12 volumes), Ukraine (2007, 1 volume), Russia (2004-2008, 4 volumes) and additionally the Atlas of the Republic of Poland, 1993-1997, a set of loose sheets in a case). The following features have been picked out for comparison: volume, editorial form, percentage contents of maps, diagrams and texts. Characteristic original topics and solutions have been emphasized and illustrated with examples of maps (fig. 1-5). Most importantly, the structure of contents has been analyzed and compared in detail and divided into five basic thematic units: general issues, history, natural environment, population and settlement, and economy. In some atlases also the summarizing chapter has been analyzed. The research results have been put together in table 1 and shown in the form of diagrams (fig. 6-9). Tendencies present in this domain as well as the problems which authors of contemporary national atlases face have been indicated in the conclusion. Thematic structure of atlases reflects various types of conditioning, environmental as well as historical, political and social. For instance the large share of historical maps in the National Atlas of Russia results from the particular attention which Russians pay to history as a basis for patriotic and civic upbringing. This tradition is also reflected in the large share of historical issues in the Atlas of Ukraine. On the other hand, omission of historical issues from the National Atlas of Germany may perhaps reflect a tendency to renounce the country's infamous history of the first half of the 20th century. Unlike the atlases of Western Europe (Spain, Germany), those of East European countries (Russia, Ukraine) present more characteristics of natural environment than economic issues. It reflects some significant limitations of development of economic and social geography in the Soviet Union which resulted from restricted access to source statistical data and inability to fully and ob¬jectively present research results. Comparative analysis of selected national atlases not only made it possible to determine variations and tendencies in the structure of contents and form of atlases, but also to determine problems arising during the development of the concept of a national atlas. The following tendencies were observed: increased number of diagrams, graphs, photographs and extensive texts placed in atlases, higher share of social and cultural issues of everyday importance, and a comprehensive approach to presented issues which often alters the traditional form of atlases (e.g. the atlases of Germany and Sweden). Three conceptual problems emerged from the analysis: 1) how to present complex issues in a possibly accessible way (importance of explanations), 2) to what extent regional approach can be applied (e.g. city maps, maps of protected areas) and 3) how to present the history of a particular country: in a separate section or together with the presentation of specific issues.

Opis:: Przedstawiono model diagnostyczny wiążący parametry wybranych warunków siedliskowych (głównie edaficznych) z wymaganiami uprawowymi (glebowymi, wodnymi, klimatycznymi i lokalizacyjnymi) dziewięciu rozpatrywanych roślin energetycznych. Doboru tego dokonywano spośród układów parametrów identyfikujących poszczególne kategorie przydatności w modelu kategoryzacji [Ostrowski 2008]. Taka postać modelu diagnostycznego stanowić będzie podstawę do opracowania map komputerowych przedstawiających orientacyjne rozmieszczenie obszarów preferowanych do uprawy tych roślin w skali regionalnej w oparciu o bazę danych o glebach marginalnych, funkcjonującą w IMUZ.
Paper presents a diagnostic model joining the parameters of selected habitat conditions (mainly edaphic) with cultivation requirements (concerning soil, water, climate and location) for nine considered energy plants. The model in form of relational table contains diagnostic configurations identifying habitat conditions preferred for their cultivation. Such form of the model will enable to develop the digital maps showing indicatory locations of the areas preferential for cultivation of energy crops on a regional scale, as based on marginal soils data-base functioning at the Institute for Land Reclamation and Grassland Farming (IMUZ).
