Opis:: The criterion of maturity in forestry is the average exploitable age i.e. the age of technical maturity of dominant trees in a crop. It has been demonstrated that rotation ages at all yield regulation stages are not applied in full. This is because forest is a biological system opened to influences of natural and economic environments. Decreasing or increasing rotation ages would not make the yield regulation systems used in forest planning practices better or more efficient. The application of superior, more modern regulation systems is thought to be the only realistic solution to the problem.

Opis:: In forest management planning the enhancement of forest biological diversity at the genetic, species, ecosystem and landscape levels occurs through making general and specific decisions. The major general decisions concern forest categorisation, division of a forest into management units, choice of a management system and setting silvicultural−management objectives. Specific decisions concern three processes of forests development affecting forest sustainability, i.e. regeneration, survival and disappearance of trees and stands.

Opis:: Improvement of the quality of habitats has increased the importance of forest stands in the regeneration phase. This period can be divided into two management sub−stages: sowing and cleaning phases. In the forest management practice, such stand category is characterized only by total area and growing stock. Double−feature (area, volume) table shows more complete characterization of age classes, which ranks the stands of this category with regard to their age and percentage of the area covered by the regeneration. The table can be used to determine the order of stand selection for felling. Too slow removal of old−growth stands is found to delay the exposure of the usually overgrown regenerations, often causing their damage in the process of forest utilisation or due to the lack of shelter from the wind−fallen trees. The existing management rules for the stands in this category should be changed.

Opis:: The paper presents the negative effects of passive nature protection and demonstrates that some groups of ecologists seem to still ignore these facts. The paper shows that, according to the new 'philosophy' of nature protection, there is neither a real climax biocoenosis nor the state of equilibrium in nature, and that natural succession is not in fact possible. Therefore the return to nature by creating national parks and nature reserves is not realistic. The sustainability of forests cannot be ensured by banning their access, or through their passive conservation, but by regulating the mutually interrelated biological processes, like regeneration, survival, and loss of trees and stands. The abandoning of exploiting non−renewable raw materials, like ore, sand, coal or stone deposits will undoubtedly contribute to their protection and preserve them for the generations to come. However at the same time forbidding the use of renewable forest resources will not support their protection, but will rather upset and interrupt their existence, until their final death. Only active, regulatory activity by man can save the endangered and rare species and natural ecosystems, including forests, from extinction. The common belief that sustainable existence and permanence of many plant and animal species is not possible without human support and regulation should prevail both in forestry and in modern nature protection.

Opis:: Forest management in the State Forests in the past two decades (1990−2009) focused solely on the aging of forest stands and augmentation of forest resources. This period saw an increase in the average age of forest stands from 54 to 61 years, the average standing volume from 186 to 245 m3/ha, and the share of harvested volume in annual increment volume from 50 to 58%. As a result, the share of stands older than 80 years increased from 21 to 28% while that of plantations and young stands decreased from 14.4 to 11%. This resulted in the deterioration of the health and sanitary condition of forests.

Opis:: Final and intermediate cuts volume in the State Forests are expected to range in 2011−2020 from 18.28 to 23.90 and from 13.39 to 13.58 million m3 netto annually respectively, with probability of 0.954. The final cut will account for about 60% of the principal harvest. Positive changes will occur during the forecast period in the average stand age from 3 to 4 years and in the average standing volume from 3 to 5 m3/ha.

Opis:: The adopted rotation age and prescribed cut are found not to be fully respected at any stage of regulation, planning and implementation of cutting plans. As a result, timber, the main crop in forestry, is not uniform in terms of rotation age and fails the adopted criteria of crop maturity. Protective forests are not subject to management unless cut determination derives from silvicultural needs, without specifying the criteria for these needs. The level of cuts subjectively determined by quality control inspectors is not respected in forest management practice and should be recommended for use in the forests administered by the State Forests.
