Opis:
Background. Nowadays the importance of lifestyles in the prevention of type 2 diabetes and the metabolic syndrome has been largely accertained. Objective. The purpose of our work is to implement programs that promote a nutritional culture in adolescents and young adults of the La Sabana University. Methods. The methodology entailed, after the corresponding informed consent, taking measures of the triceps and supraescapular skinfolds, waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), lean mass, and fat mass. Fasting blood samples were also taken to quantify cholesterol, triglycerides, high density lipoprotein (HDL) and low density lipoprotein (LDL). Results. The results obtained show that of the 165 students, 10.3% were underweight, 13.93% were overweight and 0.6% were obese. With regards to gender, 4.8% of the men and 9% of the women were overweight, 3% of the men and 7.2% of the women were underweight, and 0.6% of the women were obese. The blood chemistry showed that 30% had hypercholesterolemia, 18% hypertriglyceridemia, 17% reported low HDL levels and 67% reported high LDL levels. Of all the cases studied, 40% are at risk of a metabolic syndrome. 60% claimed not to practice any physical activity - especially women who reported 44.70%. Conclusions. These findings have allowed us at the institution to implement a culture of healthy habits. The have also allowed us to identify students with risk factors for type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. This is why the cardio- metabolic monitoring and control based on healthy eating and physical activity are important.

Opis:
Metagenomics has revolutionized our understanding of microbial communities, offering unprecedented insights into their genetic and functional diversity across Earth’s diverse ecosystems. Beyond their roles as environmental constituents, microbiomes act as symbionts, profoundly influencing the health and function of their host organisms. Given the inherent complexity of these communities and the diverse environments where they reside, the components of a metagenomics study must be carefully tailored to yield accurate results that are representative of the populations of interest. This Primer examines the methodological advancements and current practices that have shaped the field, from initial stages of sample collection and DNA extraction to the advanced bioinformatics tools employed for data analysis, with a particular focus on the profound impact of next-generation sequencing on the scale and accuracy of metagenomics studies. We critically assess the challenges and limitations inherent in metagenomics experimentation, available technologies and computational analysis methods. Beyond technical methodologies, we explore the application of metagenomics across various domains, including human health, agriculture and environmental monitoring. Looking ahead, we advocate for the development of more robust computational frameworks and enhanced interdisciplinary collaborations. This Primer serves as a comprehensive guide for advancing the precision and applicability of metagenomic studies, positioning them to address the complexities of microbial ecology and their broader implications for human health and environmental sustainability.

Opis:
We theoretically study the infrared reflectivity and transmissivity of a high-temperature layered superconductor slab. Both infrared spectra exhibit very narrow Fabry-Perot resonances associated with the quantization of the wave vector of the TM electromagnetic modes. The resonances are observed in a pass band where the refractive index of the layered superconductor is negative. The pass band of negative dispersion is above the Josephson plasma frequency which appears in the expression for the effective permittivity component, corresponding to the direction perpendicular to the layers. It was found that the Fabry-Perot resonances undergo a blue shift as the slab thickness or the angle of incidence are increased. Moreover, the quantized electromagnetic modes turn out to be quasi-longitudinal because of the strong anisotropy of the infrared dielectric response of the layered superconductor.

Opis:
The water level above a hydrokinetic turbine is likely to vary throughout the season and even along the day. In this work, the influence of the free surface on the performance of a three bladed horizontal-axis turbine is explored by means of a three-dimensional, transient, two-phase flow computational model implemented in the commercial CFD software ANSYS Fluent 19.0. The [...] Transition turbulence model coupled with the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method is used to track the air-water interface. The rotor diameter is [...]. Two operating conditions are analyzed: deep tip immersion (0.55D) and shallow tip immersion (0.19D). Three tip speed ratios are evaluated for each immersion. Simulation results show a good agreement with experimental data reported in the literature, although the computed torque and thrust coefficients are slightly underestimated. Details of the free surface dynamics, the flow past the turbine and the wake near the rotor are also discussed.

Opis:
We studied the influence of magnetic history on the stability of critical state and the dynamics of flux jumps in conventional NbTi superconductor. We have found that both the stability of critical state and the dynamics of flux jumps are strongly influenced by the magnetic history and by the magnetic field distribution induced within the sample by preceding jumps. This magnetic field distribution can be particularly complex in the region of the hysteresis loop where the external magnetic field changes its sign (region of remagnetization), because of demagnetizing effects. For this reason, the most complex structure of the flux jumps is observed in the third quadrant of magnetization hysteresis loop. Flux jumps observed in the region of remagnetization have different dynamics in comparison to the jumps observed in other regions of the magnetization hysteresis loop. Duration of these jumps is usually significantly longer than others, and their structure is more complex.

Opis:
The problem of stability of bilayer type II superconductor with different critical current densities of inner part and coating was considered. The optimum thickness of surface layer enabling the maximal increase of the field of first flux jump was found. The field of instability for such bilayer structure was calculated for NbTi superconductor. An increase of the field of the first flux jump by about 60% has been found for optimal coating thickness.

Opis:
This article presents short-term predictions using neural networks tuned by energy associated to series based-predictor filter for complete and incomplete datasets. A benchmark of high roughness time series from Mackay Glass (MG), Logistic (LOG), Henon (HEN) and some univariate series chosen from NN3 Forecasting Competition are used. An average smoothing technique is assumed to complete the data missing in the dataset. The Hurst parameter estimated through wavelets is used to estimate the roughness of the real and forecasted series. The validation and horizon of the time series is presented by the 15 values ahead. The performance of the proposed filter shows that even a short dataset is incomplete, besides a linear smoothing technique employed; the prediction is almost fair by means of SMAPE index. Although the major result shows that the predictor system based on energy associated to series has an optimal performance from several chaotic time series, in particular, this method among other provides a good estimation when the short-term series are taken from one point observations.
