Opis:: The author discusses the problem of intestinal parasites in the north-eastern regions of Poland, basing on the examinations of 1057 inhabitants of the Bielsk Podlaski district (Białystok province). The general result of positive tests (54.6%) as well as of individual parasitic invasions (for instance T. trichiura – 40.3%) and the relatively high percentage established, among the personnel employed in food industry and trade, require praphylactic and therapeutic measures on a large scale.

Opis:: Badania przeprowadzono wśród 360 studentów UMB o zróżnicowanym stopniu odżywienia. Badania objęły 251 studentek (46 z niedowagą, 186 z prawidłową masą ciała, 19 z nadmierną masą ciała) oraz 69 studentów (7 z niedowagą, 47 z prawidłową masą ciała, 15 z nadmierną masą ciała). Analizę ilościową całodziennych racji pokarmowych przeprowadzono na podstawie wywiadu 24-godzinnego, obejmującego dzień poprzedzający badanie. W opracowaniu wyników wykorzystano program komputerowy Dieta 2.0, opracowany przez Instytut Żywności i Żywienia w Warszawie. Obliczono wartość energetyczną oraz podaż podstawowych składników odżywczych, a także błonnika i cholesterolu pokarmowego. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań wskazują na brak zbilansowania zawartości składników odżywczych w całodziennych racjach pokarmowych ankietowanych studentów obu płci, niezależnie od ich stanu odżywienia. Stwierdzono zbyt niską podaż energii w odniesieniu do zalecanych norm. Podaż węglowodanów i tłuszczów była zdecydowanie niższa od rekomendowanych norm. Badania wykazały również niskie spożycie błonnika pokarmowego we wszystkich badanych grupach oraz wysokie spożycie cholesterolu pokarmowego w grupie mężczyzn.
The research was conducted into 360 students of Medical University in Bialystok with differentiated nutritional status. The study involved 251 female students (46 with underweight, 186 with normal weight, 19 with excessive body weight) and 69 male students (7 with underweight, 47 with normal weight, 15 with excessive body weight). The quantity analyze of daily food rations was conducted on the base of the previous day 24h dietary recall method. The computer program Diet 2.0 designed in the Institute of Food and Nutrition in Warsaw was used for calculations. Energetic value and basic nutrients supply was estimated and also the average content of dietary fiber and cholesterol. The results of the conducted research indicate lack of balanced content of essential nutrients in daily food rations of the tested students of both sexes, irrespective of nutritional status. Energy supply was far too low comparing to recommended standards. It was proved that carbohydrate and fat supply was definitely lower than recommended standards. The research also showed low consumption of dietary fiber in all investigated groups and high consumption of cholesterol in men.

Opis:: This publication aims at presenting a method for obtaining vegetable oil with different viscosity classes. The subject of the research focused the on oxidation of rapeseed oil and the determination of the proprieties of this reaction. The most advantageous results have been achieved when the process was held at a temperature of 150oC. Physical and chemical properties of the base oil and obtained oils with different viscosity classes have been determined.
W artykule przedstawiono metodę otrzymania oleju roślinnego o różnych klasach lepkościowych. Przedmiotem badań była reakcja utleniania oleju rzepakowego oraz określenie warunków jej przebiegu. Najkorzystniejsze rezultaty uzyskano dla prowadzenia procesu utleniania w temperaturze 150oC. Oceniono właściwości fizykochemiczne oleju bazowego oraz uzyskanych olejów o różnych lepkościach.

Opis:: Prezentowane w pracy wyniki dają odpowiedź na pytanie dotyczące wpływu podatności lędźwiowego odcinka kręgosłupa na jakość stabilizacji transpedikularnej. Przedstawiono wyniki badań przemieszczeń odcinka lędźwiowego kręgosłupa poddanego jednocześnie kompresji i zginaniu (mimośrodowe ściskanie). Badano przemieszczenia kręgu L3 dziewięciu preparatów ustabilizowanych za pomocą systemów Socon, Omega oraz Bial-Stab, a następnie pomiary powtarzano po wykonaniu korporektomii na poziomie L3. Wyniki badań porównywano z wynikami uzyskanymi na preparatach nieustabilizowanych. Wykazano, że brak ciągłości przedniej kolumny kręgosłupa nie wpływa na biomechaniczną jakość stabilizacji w zakresie stosowanych obciążeń. Wyniki analizy statystycznej jednoznacznie wskazują, że podatność kręgosłupa na obciążenia wpływa w sposób istotny na wartości przemieszczeń po stabilizacji przeznasadowej. Nie zaobserwowano istotnych statystycznie różnic w jakości stabilizacji pomiędzy poszczególnymi systemami.
In the paper the results of influence of lumbar spine flexibility on quality of transpedicular stabilization are presented. In particular, measurements of displacements of the lumbar spine subjected to simultaneous compression and bending (eccentric compression) are shown. The displacements were measured at L3 level in nine lumbar specimens stabilized by means of Socon, Omega and Bial-Stab systems. The obtained results were compared with the results of measurements carried out on the specimens without stabilization. It was also shown that a lack of continuity of the anterior column did not influence on quality of the stabilizations in the range of the used loading. The statistical analysis showed that lumbar flexibility sufficiently influenced on the displacements of the fixed lumbar spine. No statistical differences were observed between of the systems used as regards their biomechanical performance.

Opis:: The puprose of this study was to evaluate retention force of conical double crowns in two material connections: gold casting alloy/gold casting alloy and gold casting alloy/gold electroforming alloy. 12 crown pairs of both material connections with the cone angles of 2°, 4° and 6° were made. Experiment of 10.000 in-and-out cycles was performed using a new device which allows the retentive force to be measured in continuous way without necessity of moving the samples to another device. It has been found that the higher the retentive force values, the lower the cone angle. Dispersion of the retention value was similar in both groups, but when cone angle was 2° or 4°, stability of retention force with the passage of time was higher in combinations with electroformed copings. The optimum solution was the cast alloy/cast alloy connection but only with cone angle 6°. However, retentive values seem to be too low to achieve proper retention of dentures.

Opis:: Heightened tonic stretch reflex contributes to increased muscle tone and a more-flexed resting elbow joint angle (EJA) in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Dopaminergic medication restores central nervous system (CNS) functioning and decreases resting muscle electrical and mechanical activities. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dopaminergic medication on parkinsonian rigidity, resting EJA, resting electrical activity (electromyography, EMG) and mechanical properties (myotonometry, MYO) of elbow flexor muscles and the associations of EJA with these muscles resting electrical activity and mechanical properties in PD patients. We also evaluated a relationship between dopaminergic treatment dose and these outcome measures values. Methods: Ten PD patients (age 68 ± 10.1 years; body mass 70 ± 16.8 kg; height 162 ± 6.6 cm; illness duration 9 ± 4.5 years) were tested during medication on- and off-phases. Resting EJA, myotonometric muscle stiffness (S-MYO) and root mean square electromyogram amplitude (RMS-EMG) were recorded from relaxed biceps brachii and brachioradialis muscles. Based on the above parameters, we also calculated the EJA/S-MYO ratio and EJA/RMS-EMG ratio. Parkinsonian rigidity was assessed using the motor section of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale. Results: EJA, EJA/S-MYO ratio, and EJA/RMS-EMG ratio were increased and S-MYO, RMS-EMG, and parkinsonian rigidity were decreased during the medication on-phase compared with the off-phase. In addition, the dopaminergic treatment dose was negatively correlated with S-MYO and RMS-EMG, and positively correlated with EJA/SMYO and EJA/RMS-EMG ratios. Conclusions: We conclude that dopaminergic medication-induced improvements in resting elbow joint angle in tested patients with PD are related to changes in their muscle electrical and mechanical properties.
