Opis:
In this paper we present a hybrid Tabu Search - Simulated Annealing heuristic fox the minimal makespan flowshop sequencing problem. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the hybridization we compare the hybrid metaheuristic with pure Tabu Search and Simulated Annealing heuristics. The results from computational experience are discussed.

Opis:
We investigate the class BA of ordered regular semigroups in which each element has a biggest associate x = max {y | xyx = x}. This class properly contains the class PO of principally ordered regular semigroups (in which there exists x* = max {y | xyx ⩽x}) and is properly contained in the class BI of ordered regular semigroups in which each element has a biggest inverse xo. We show that several basic properties of the unary operation x ↦ x* in PO extend to corresponding properties of the unary operation x ↦ x in BA. We consider naturally ordered semigroups in BA and prove that those that are orthodox contain a biggest idempotent. We determine the structure of some such semigroups in terms of a principal left ideal and a principal right ideal. We also characterise the completely simple members of BA. Finally, we consider the naturally ordered semigroups in BA that do not have a biggest idempotent.

Opis:
Gullies developed on sandy lithologies are scarce. Such landforms have developed in the sandy deposits of the Cretaceous 'Utrillas' facies within the Segovia province of Central Spain. They appear at the slopes of a group of mesas and cuestas located at the edge of the northern piedmont of the Guadarrama Mountains of the Spanish Central System. The activity of the different geomorphic processes acting in these gullies, as well as their connectivity, are being characterized and quantified. This study was preceded by reconnaissance methods, whereas presently technologically advanced and more accurate techniques are being utilized. The new methods are applied in an experimental catchment (1.26 ha). They include: i) an automatic Reid-type (formerly termed Birkbeck) slot bedload sampler for continuous monitoring of bedload flux and for continuous sampling of bedload; siphons for sampling the suspended load; and a Parshall flume to monitor water discharge. Jointly, these instruments allow to study the fluvial dynamics at the catchment mouth; ii) topographic surveys undertaken by a Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) to quantify the activity of gravitational, overland flow and fluvial processes in different sediment source areas within the gully basin; iii) micro runoff and erosion plots to monitor the infiltration and erosive response of different Hydrologic Response Units (HRU) comprising the interior of the catchment. This ensemble of novel methods has started providing patterns of sediment movement within the gully system.

Opis:
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent hazardous chemicals and are now out of production worldwide. Although over 20 years have passed since the Helsinki Convention promoted the elimination of PCB use, it is difficult to put an end to PCB emissions in a short time because PCBs have a long lifetime in the environment and a major portion of PCBs are emitted from electrical equipment manufactured before the Helsinki Convention but still used today. PCBs have an impact on human sperm integrity in the European male population; furthermore, Arctic ecosystems such as those supporting polar bears and seals are exposed to risks due to the long-distance transport of PCBs. Most European countries have no proper facilities for PCB treatment. After analyzing extensive information about PCB treatments, it is concluded that the thermal process is technically sound and cost-effective. This study contributes to the promotion of treatments in most European countries storing PCBs with the aim of pursuing a sustainable future.

Opis:
This paper aims to introduce GIS, its definition, principle, application in any discipline particularly maritime, its process, data sets and features and its benefits to maritime and universities. Specifically, the paper intends to provide an overview of its wide applications in maritime including but not limited to marine transportation, marine environment, port management and operation, maritime education and training (MET) and maritime research. GIS simplest task is in mapping and visualization. But its most important function is in spatial analysis. Spatial analysis takes into account the location, geometry, topology, and relationships of geographic data, which lend itself to intelligent decision making. GIS is not just for researchers and students. GIS is especially useful for decision makers such as: managers, administrators, and directors of large and small projects. Scenarios are “seen” and analyzed even before events happen. To planners and decision makers, this is very important because they can assess the impact of events or scenario and may save a lot of time, effort, and money before implementing the actual project. An additional skill on GIS when learned or thought would certainly result to a technically competent maritime global workforce. The paper would provide ideas on possible areas for collaborations among TransNav member institutions for data sharing which may be processed and analyzed by a GIS specialist.

Opis:
This paper presents the development of a cooling apparatus using water in a commercial photovoltaic panel in order to analyze the increased efficiency through decreased operating temperature. The system enables the application of reuse water flow, at ambient temperature, on the front surface of PV panel and is composed of an inclined plane support, a perforated aluminum profile and a water gutter. A luminaire was specially developed to simulate the solar radiation over the module under test in a closed room, free from the influence of external climatic conditions, to carry out the repetition of the experiment in controlled situations. The first case study was published at EEEIC2016 conference where the panel was submitted to different rates of water flow, from 1 L/min to 4 L/min. In the test conditions without cooling apparatus, the panel reached about 70°C and produced approximately 63Wh. With the cooling apparatus with water flow rate of 2 L/min, the module reached about 50°C and produced approximately 77Wh. However, it has been observed that this water flow was overestimated. A second case study was carried out in order to perform the threshold between the flow and the energy produced. The best ratio was flow of 0.6 L/min and net energy of 77.41Wh. Gain of 22.69% compared to the panel without the cooling system. The best water flow rate was of 0.6 L/min and net energy of 77.41Wh. Gain of 22.69% compared to the panel without the cooling system.

Opis:
Pest mites of the family Tetranychidae are commonly reported in several legumes. However, reports of their occurrence in lima beans are insipient, especially in Brazil. The objective of this research was to record the occurrence of mites in lima bean plants and to describe their damage in this Fabaceae. Tetranychus neocaledonicus André and Mononychellus planki McGregor were found in lima bean plants, Phaseolus lunatus (Fabaceae or Leguminosae). The lima bean plants, when infested by these mites, initially exhibit small whitish spots in the leaflets, which with increasing population density rapidly evolve into chlorotic patches, followed by silvering, and may dry out and fall due to their overfeeding. The extent of the damage caused to lima bean plants and the adaptability of the mite to warm and dry conditions indicate that T. neocaledonicus has greater potential as a lima bean pest than M. planki in northeastern Brazil. This is the first record of these mites associated with P. lunatus.
