Opis:
Maritime surveillance from space is useful for many applications, such as fisheries control, maritime border control and maritime security. A new generation of satellite-borne Synthetic Aperture Radars is able to provide resolutions of down to 1 meter. In the case of maritime targets, however, their motions lead to blurring in the SAR images, so these high resolutions cannot be attained. Scientific research into how to surmount the existing limits on the use of high-resolution images for maritime surveillance would be of great utility. In this context, high resolution SAR data were collected from ships that have been fitted with motion sensors in order to understand vessel motion impact on detection and recognition capability.

Opis:
This paper presents our research and development work on new circuits and topologies based on Magnetic RAM for use as configuration memory elements of reconfigurable arrays. MRAM provides non volatility with cell areas and with access speeds comparable to those of SRAM and with lower process complexity than FLASH memories. The new memory cells take advantage of the Thermal Assisted Switching (TAS) writing technique to solve the drawbacks of the more common Field Induced Magnetic Switching writing technique. The CMOS circuit structures to implement the main components for reading and writing the MTJ cells have been developed, characterized and evaluated. A scaled down prototype of a coarse grain reconfigurable array that employs the TAS-MRAM elements as configuration memory has been designed and electrically simulated pre- and post- layout. The results obtained for all the circuit elements, namely the storage cells and the current generators, indicate that the new configuration memory cells can provide a very promising technological solution for run-time reconfigurable hardware devices. The prototype has been manufactured using a standard process 0.35μm 4-Metal CMOS process technology and should be under test in the foreseeable future.

Opis:
The design of neonatal intensive care units (NICU) influences both patient safety and clinical outcomes as well as the acoustic conditions. In NICU exposure to sound pressure levels above the recommended can affect both neonates and healthcare staff. This study aimed to evaluate the sound pressure levels and to assess noise perception of professionals in a NICU before and after structural modifications and layout redesign. The measurements were performed with a sound level meter. A questionnaire was given to staff before and after the intervention. The opinion of healthcare staff regarding noise in NICU was better after the intervention, when compared with the responses previously given. The results showed that noise levels were excessive in the NICU (before and after), exceeding the international recommendations, with the levels ranging between 46.6 dBA to 57.8 dBA before and 52.0 dBA to 54.0 dBA after intervention. Overall, there is a need for more research in order to verify the effectiveness of some actions and strategies to reduce the impact of noise in NICU.

Opis:
Ultrastructural analyses of fish-infecting myxosporean Henneguya piaractus that is found in the gill lamellae of the freshwater teleost Piaractus mesopotamicus (Characidae) and collected from the Paraguai River, Brazil were described. The parasite occurs within large whitish spherical to ellipsoidal polysporic cysts (up to 2.5 mm long) delimited by a layer of fibroblasts generally connected with some capillaries on the gill epithelium. No external morphological signs of disease were visible in the infected fishes. The tailed spores measured 61.5 ± 0.91 (60.2–62.6) μm in total length and ellipsoidal spore body 21.1 ± 0.62 (20.6–21.9) μm long, 6.7 ± 0.40 (6.2–7.3) μm wide and 2.5 ± 0.54 (2.0–3.1) μm thick. The spore wall was about 97 nm of thickness and consisted of a thin electron-dense exospore and a thick electron-lucent endospore with about 85 nm of thickness. The tailed spores were composed of two equal–sized shell valves adhering together along the straight suture line each having in continuity a equal caudal tapering tail measuring 40.5 ± 1.02 (38.7–43.1) μm in length. Two symmetric polar capsules measured 9.8 ± 0.28 (9.3–10.1) μm long and 1.9 ± 0.37 (1.4–2.4) μm wide, each having a polar filament with 10–11 (rarely 12) coils

Opis:
The Differential Evolution algorithm, like other evolutionary techniques, presents as main disadvantage the high number of objective function evaluations as compared with classical methods. To overcome this disadvantage, this work proposes a new strategy for the dynamic updating of the population size to reduce the number of objective function evaluations. This strategy is based on the definition of convergence rate to evaluate the homogeneity of the population in the evolutionary process. The methodology is applied to the solution of singular optimal control problems in chemical and mechanical engineering. The results demonstrated that the methodology proposed represents a promising alternative as compared with other competing strategies.

Opis:
This paper presents a low-cost and smart measurement system to acquire and analyze mechanical motion parameters. The measurement system integrates several measuring nodes that include one or more triaxial accelerometers, a temperature sensor, a data acquisition unit and a wireless communication unit. Particular attention was dedicated to measurement system accuracy and compensation of measurement errors caused by power supply voltage variations, by temperature variations and by accelerometers’ misalignments. Mathematical relationships for error compensation were derived and software routines for measurement system configuration, data acquisition, data processing, and self-testing purposes were developed. The paper includes several simulation and experimental results obtained from an assembled prototype based on a crank-piston mechanism.

Opis:
Pest mites of the family Tetranychidae are commonly reported in several legumes. However, reports of their occurrence in lima beans are insipient, especially in Brazil. The objective of this research was to record the occurrence of mites in lima bean plants and to describe their damage in this Fabaceae. Tetranychus neocaledonicus André and Mononychellus planki McGregor were found in lima bean plants, Phaseolus lunatus (Fabaceae or Leguminosae). The lima bean plants, when infested by these mites, initially exhibit small whitish spots in the leaflets, which with increasing population density rapidly evolve into chlorotic patches, followed by silvering, and may dry out and fall due to their overfeeding. The extent of the damage caused to lima bean plants and the adaptability of the mite to warm and dry conditions indicate that T. neocaledonicus has greater potential as a lima bean pest than M. planki in northeastern Brazil. This is the first record of these mites associated with P. lunatus.
