Opis:
Underwater terrain aided navigation is applicable to underwater vehicles during long missions. It relies on a prior known ocean bathymetric map and collected in-situ sonar data to determine the position of the vehicle. The performance of the navigation system depends on the sea floor characteristics and algorithms that are used to match those two sets of data. In this paper, a novel idea was proposed to treat bathymetric maps and in-situ sonar data as images. A variety of existing algorithms developed for image processing can be applied to obtain position fixes. Textual features extraction, image interpolation and image registration were tested using available bathymetric data and synthesized sonar data as collected in-situ. Simulation results indicate that the chosen image analysis methods are capable of providing robust position fixes. The image characteristics extracted from the underwater terrain data are shown to be rotation and scale invariant. As the resolution of multi-beam bathymetry sonars keeps improving with technology advances, the use of image analysis techniques facilitates underwater terrain aided navigation for a wide range of new applications.

Opis:
Sediments found in waterways around the world may contain toxic compounds of anthropogenic origin that can harm the environment and human health. As a result, it is often necessary to remove them and find disposal methods that are environmentally and economically acceptable. Here, we report on results obtained in an experimental program to characterize the nature of the sediment contamination. The objective was to gain a better understanding of the properties of the sediments to develop better methods for understanding the fate and transport of the contaminants and for improving methods for their removal from the sediments. Our investigations made use of X-ray facilities at the Brookhaven National Synchrotron Light Source and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility at Grenoble, France. The experiments included: measurements of the microstructure of the sediments using computed microtomography, X-ray absorption, and fluorescence microscopy with resolutions as low as 0.2 micrometers to obtain information on the relationships of organic and mineral components of the sediments and on the distribution of contaminants on the surfaces of the sediment grains, investigation of functional groups of chemical compounds using X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy and electron probe measurements were made to ascertain the morphology of the sediment surfaces and the distribution of metals on individual sediment grains.

Opis:
This paper studies the load-deflection relations of T-section rails under lateral loads based on elastic-plastic theory. A linear-hardening model and an elastic-plastic power-exponent hardening model of the material are adopted in this study. The analytical expressions for the load-deflection relations in the loading process are given. Compared with the experimental results, it is found that the load-deflection curves calculated with the elastic-plastic powerexponent hardening model are closer to the experimental results than those with the linearhardening model.

Opis:
In this work, a two-dimensional finite element model for the grain boundary flow rule is developed based on the thermo-mechanical gradient-enhanced plasticity theory. The proposed model is temperature-dependent. A special attention is given to physical and micromechanical nature of dislocation interactions in combination with thermal activation on stored and dissipated energy. Thermodynamic conjugate microforces are decomposed into energetic and dissipative components. Correspondingly, two different grain boundary material length scales are present in the proposed model. Finally, numerical examples are solved in order to explore characteristics of the proposed grain boundary flow rule.

Opis:
Truck arrival management (TAM) has been recognized as an effective solution to alleviate the gate congestion at container terminals. To further utilize TAM in improving the overall terminal performance, this study integrates TAM with the other terminal operations at a tactical level. An integrated planning model and a sequential planning model are presented to coordinate the major terminal planning activities, including quayside berth allocation, yard storage space allocation and TAM. A heuristic-based genetic algorithm is developed to solve the models. A range of numerical examinations are performed to compare two planning models. The result shows that: the integrated model can improve the terminal performance significantly from the sequential model alone, particularly when the gate capacity and the yard capacity are relatively low; whereas the sequential model is more efficient than the integrated model in terms of computational time.

Opis:
Radars and sensors are essential devices for an Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) to detect obstacles. Their precision has improved significantly in recent years with relatively accurate capability to locate obstacles. However, small detection errors in the estimation and prediction of trajectories of obstacles may cause serious problems in accuracy, thereby damaging the judgment of USV and affecting the effectiveness of collision avoidance. In this study, the effect of radar errors on the prediction accuracy of obstacle position is studied on the basis of the autoregressive prediction model. The cause of radar error is also analyzed. Subsequently, a bidirectional adaptive filtering algorithm based on polynomial fitting and particle swarm optimization is proposed to eliminate the observed errors in vertical and abscissa coordinates. Then, simulations of obstacle tracking and prediction are carried out, and the results show the validity of the algorithm. Finally, the method is used to simulate the collision avoidance of USV, and the results show the validity and reliability of the algorithm.

Opis:
The anisotropic g factors $g_{∥}$ and $g_{⊥}$ of $La_2Ni_{0.5}Li_{0.5}O_4$ are theoretically investigated using the perturbation formulae of the g factors for a low spin $(S=1//2) 3d^7$ ion in tetragonally elongated octahedra. The studied $Ni^{3+} (3d^7)$ center arises from the original $Ni^{2+}$ capturing one hole by $Li^{+}$ doping. The positive anisotropy $\Delta g (= g_{⊥}-g_{∥})$ can be ascribed to the lowest $\text{}^2 A_{1g}$ state due to the obvious (about 0.14 Å) tetragonal elongation of the oxygen octahedron around the $Ni^{3+}$ site via the Jahn-Teller effect, and the effective magnetic moment is also interpreted in a uniform way. The calculated results show good agreement with the experimental data, and the imperfection of the previous studies based on various adjusted tetragonal energy splittings without correlating to the local structure of the magnetic center is thus overcome in this work.
