Opis:
Automatic identification system (AIS) data are used to analyze vessels’ positions or maritime traffic. Recently, satellites are being adopted for gathering AIS data (satellite AIS). A satellite AIS can gather AIS data from all over the world, including the center of the ocean. However, because a satellite moves around the world every day, there is a very short window of time that the satellite can receive signals from some specific area. Furthermore, because a satellite AIS receives signals simultaneously from a wider area than a terrestrial AIS does, the satellite AIS has lower rate of signal reception, especially near vessel congested areas. This may cause many unrecognized vessels. For this situation, this paper proposes a new method to estimate the number of unrecognized vessels based on a binomial distribution model. With this method, we are able to estimate the number of unrecognized vessels just from satellite AIS data themselves.

Opis:
We have synthesized Cu-substituted (Au,Cu)-Al-Yb quasicrystals in order to investigate the relationship between the quasilattice constant and the magnetic property. The quasilattice constant $a_{R}$ is found to decrease as Au is replaced by Cu, and the maximum reduction of 2.18% in $a_{R}$ was observed for x=0.60 in $(Au_{1-x}Cu_x)_{49}Al_{34}Yb_{17}$. Magnetic measurements of $(Au_{1-x}Cu_x)_{49}Al_{34}Yb_{17}$ (x=0, 0.10, 0.20, 0.50) show that the intermediate-valence state of Yb persists in all the studied compositions. The effective magnetic moment is found to depend on r̅/$a_{R}$ rather than on the quasilattice constant $a_{R}$. This suggests that r̅/$a_{R}$ can be regarded as a measure of the chemical pressure induced on the Yb atoms.

Opis:
Scanning tunneling microscopy is employed to characterise the structure and morphology of the (100) surface of the Ag-In-Gd 1/1 approximant. The surface prepared by the usual method of sputter-annealing produces step-terrace structure. Observed step heights are consistent with the lattice constant of the bulk. Scanning tunneling microscopy on terraces reveals cluster-like protrusions arranged with a square unit cell as expected from the bulk. It has not been possible to assign the terraces to the specific bulk planes because of lack of atomic resolution on terraces.

Opis:
Slow dynamics of the initially photoinduced state has been observed by the pump-probe type time-resolved reflection spectroscopy in the charge separated phase of the half-filled strong dimer system, $Et_2Me_2Sb[Pd(dmit)_2]_2$ (dmit = 1,3-dithiol-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate). We have succeeded to reproduce the probe photon energy dependence of the time profile qualitatively in the time delay range from 10 ps to 1 ns assuming the dynamical expansion of the domain of the photo-induced dimer-Mott insulating phase in the host charge-separated one.

Opis:
Japanese diving fishermen are known to have a high prevalence of dysbaric osteonecrosis. Their typical dive practices are characterized by long exposure to high pressure and by repetitive diving. The etiology of dysbaric osteonecrosis still remains controversial. Because the development of dysbaric osteonecrosis may occur silently, the diver may be unaware of the actual ischemic event. Moreover, key etiologic evidence is often lost before the diver is examined. The early stage of dysbaric osteonecrosis was evaluated in four autopsy cases of divers who died of acute decompression sikness. Hypercoagulability of blood was present in these cases. Hypercoagulability of blood has also been observed in experimental rats after decompression. Dysbaric osteonecrosis has been experimentally induced in six sheep at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. These findings are reviewed by comparing dysbaric osteonecrosis in both divers and experimental animals. In conclusion, a bone compartment syndrome and hypercoagulability appear to be pathogenetic factors in dysbaric osteonecrosis.

Opis:
In the present investigation, we have studied leaching on polygrain Al-based quasicrystalline $(i-Al_{63}Cu_{25}Fe_{12})$ as well as crystalline (B2 phase; $Al_{55}Cu_{30}Fe_{15})$ alloy surfaces using a 10 mole NaOH solution. The surface was leached at varying times from 30 min to 8 h and subsequently characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Leaching of the samples for 30 min generated a homogeneous layer. However further leaching for 1-8 h yielded nano-size particles on the surface. Spherical microstructure has been observed on the Al-Cu-Fe crystalline surface whereas on the quasicrystalline surface a petal-like microstructure appeared. The implications of the evolution of different microstructures in the context of structure, stability and activity are discussed. The results are compared with the microstructure of leached polygrained samples containing a mixture of different surface orientations.

Opis:
We performed deep and wide-field surveys at 1.1 mm using AzTEC camera mounted on ASTE. We calculate the two-point angular autocorrelation functions in seven deep survey fields: AKARI Deep Field South (ADF-S), COSMOS, GOODS-N, GOODS-S, Lockman Hole East, SSA 22, and SXDF. We detect evidence for clustering signals in all the fields. By averaging the results on the bright sources measured in the ADF-S, the SSA 22, and the SXDF fields, we derived a more significant correlation function of 1.1 mm sources. A comparison of the correlation length with a bias evolution model of dark halos suggests that dark halos hosting bright 1.1 mm sources evolve into galaxy clusters in the present-day universe.
