Opis:
This paper presents an approach to machine fault diagnosis and condition prognosis based on classification and regression trees (CART) and neuro-fuzzy inference systems (ANFIS). In case of diagnosis, CART is used as a feature selection tool to select pertinent features from data set, while ANFIS is used as a classifier. The crisp rules obtained from CART are then converted to fuzzy if-then rules, employed to identify the structure of ANFIS classifier. The hybrid of back-propagation and least squares algorithm are utilized to tune the parameters of the membership functions. The data sets obtained from vibration signals and current signals of the induction motors are used to evaluate the proposed algorithm. In case of prognosis, both of these models in association with direct prediction strategy for long-term prediction of time series techniques are utilized to forecast the future values of machine operating condition. In this case, the number of available observations and the number of predicted steps are initially determined by false nearest neighbor method and auto mutual information technique, respectively. These values are subsequently utilized as inputs for prediction models. The performance of the proposed prognosis system is then evaluated by using real trending data of a low methane compressor. A comparative study of the predicted results obtained from CART and ANFIS models is also carried out to appraise the prediction capability of these models. The results of the proposed methods in both cases indicate that CART and ANFIS offer a potential for machine fault diagnosis and for condition prognosis.

Opis:
The sustainable development of society calls for automobile engines with high efficiency and very low pollutant emission. The variable compression ratio (VCR) technique is one of the effective methods to deal with this issue. Engines with variable length connecting rod (VLEs) yield higher efficiency than other VCR engines. This paper focuses on a variable length connecting rod mechanism that achieves a VCR by changing the positions of the bottom dead center (BDC) and the top dead center (TDC) (controlled by the rotation of the eccentric sleeve) relative to the crankshaft. A kinematic model is also proposed to calculate and analyze the motion characteristics of the variable length connecting rod mechanism. The effects of eccentric size and eccentric phase on the piston motion, the TDC and BDC positions, the stroke length, the crank angles at TDC and BDC, and the compression ratio are studied in detail. It is found that the piston exhibits good motion characteristics with proper eccentric size and eccentric phase, and the compression ratio can be adjusted by varying the eccentric phase with proper eccentric size. A comparison between the proposed mechanism with another mechanism is also conducted. Therefore, this work can serve as a necessary reference for designing, analyzing, and optimizing VLEs.

Opis:
The kinetics of hydrophobic agglomeration of molybdenite fines in aqueous suspensions has been studied in this work. This study was performed on minus 5 μm molybdenite particles through turbid-ity measurements and imaging. The results have showed that stirring strength and kerosene addition greatly affected the agglomeration rate of molybdenite fines in aqueous suspensions. The higher was the stirring strength, the larger the agglomeration rate was. Kerosene addition enhanced not only the agglom-eration rate, but also the agglomerates structure. It was recommended to use radial impeller for the for-mation of hydrophobic agglomeration, because it produced a stronger shear field in impeller zone.

Opis:
Heavy metal pollutants in the leachate of waste landfill are a potential threat to the environment. In this study, the feasibility of using municipal sewage sludge as barrier material for the containment of heavy metal pollutants from solid waste landfills was evaluated by compaction test and hydraulic conductivity test concerning compaction property, impermeability and heavy metal retardation. Results of the compaction test showed that the maximum dry density of 0.79 g·cm−3 was achieved at the optimum water content of about 60%. The hydraulic conductivities of compacted sewage sludge permeated with synthetic heavy metal solutions were in the range of 1.3×10−8 – 6.2×10−9 cm·s−1, less than 1.0 ×10−−7cm·s−1 recommended by regulations for barrier materials. Chemical analyses on the effluent from the hydraulic conductivity tests indicated that the two target heavy metals, Zn and Cd in the permeants were all retarded by compacted sewage sludge, which might be attributed to the precipitation and adsorption of heavy metal ions. The results of this study suggest that specially prepared material from sewage sludge could be used as a barrier for waste landfills for its low permeability and strong retardation to heavy metal pollutants.

Opis:
A novel technique, with which in situ $TiB_2$ particles and serpentine channels are introduced to prepare wrought aluminum alloy with higher strength, has been successfully applied to produce semi-solid 7075 alloy slurry. The effects of in situ $TiB_2$ particles and serpentine channels on the microstructure of the 7075 alloy including the grain growth behavior in the semi-solid state of the 7075 alloy were investigated. The experimental results showed that the in situ $TiB_2$ particles and serpentine channels are beneficial to increase the number of solidification nuclei and to promote uniform distribution of α-Al nuclei. As a result, the semi-solid 7075 alloy slurry with globular-like grains has been successfully produced.

Opis:
Overhead cranes are extensively employed but their performance suffers from the natural sway of payloads. Sometime, the sway exhibits double-pendulum motions. To suppress the motions, this paper investigates the design of simultaneous input-shaping-based fuzzy control for double-pendulum-type overhead cranes. The fuzzy control method is based on the single input-rule modules (SIRMs). Provided the all the system variables are measurable, the SIRMs fuzzy controller is designed at first. To improve the performance of the fuzzy controller, the simultaneous input shaper is adopted to shape the control command generated by the fuzzy controller. Compared with other two control methods, i.e., the SIRMs fuzzy control and the convolved input-shaping-based SIRMs fuzzy control, simulation results illustrate the feasibility, validity and robustness of the presented control method for the anti-swing control problem of double-pendulum-type overhead cranes.

The interaction between sphalerite and pyrite was investigated by dissolution test, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), zeta potential measurement and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Dissolution tests indicated that sphalerite dissolution was promoted due to the galvanic interaction between sphalerite and pyrite. The Zn2+ ion concentration increased with increasing pyrite content and dissolved time. XPS analysis results demonstrated that a new oxidation product was formed on the sphalerite surface in the presence of pyrite in a pulp. Zeta potential measurements showed that the isoelectric point of sphalerite increased from 3.3 to 5.4 due to galvanic interaction. DFT calculation results suggested that electron transfer from sphalerite to pyrite occurred when they contacted. The Zn 4s and S 3p states of sphalerite lost electrons. The Fe 4p and 4s of pyrite states obtained electrons, and Fe 3d and S 3s states lost a small number of electrons. The surface oxidation of sphalerite was promoted due to the interaction with pyrite, and the collectorless floatability of sphalerite decreased.

Opis:
Intelligent decision system (IDS) is a window-based software package that has been developed on the basis of the evidential reasoning (ER) approach, a recent development in handling hybrid multiple criteria decision analysis (MCDA) problems with uncertainties. In this paper, the evidential reasoning approach will be briefly described first, and its major differences from and the relationships with conventional MCDA methods will also be discussed. Then the main features, advantages and benefits of IDS will be demonstrated and explained using two application examples: supplier pre-qualification assessment and customer satisfaction survey analysis, which have been investigated as part of the research projects led by the authors and funded by the UK government and the EC. It is concluded in the paper that the ER approach can be used not only to deal with problems that traditional methods can solve, but also to model and analyse more complicated decision problems that traditional methods are incapable of handling.

The solid solution crystals, $Bi_{4}(Ge_{x}Si_{1-x})_{3}O_{12}$ (BGSO) with x=0, 0.05, and 0.15, have been grown by the modified vertical Bridgman method. The as-grown crystals show 80% of transmittance with an absorption edge of 285 nm. The relative light yields of BGSO crystals are found to be 7.2%, 6.3%, and 4.2% of CsI(Tl) crystal for x=0, 0.05, and 0.15, respectively. The energy resolutions of these crystals are 18.9%, 21.3%, and 24.7%, respectively, with PMT for 662 keV gamma rays at room temperature when exposed to $\text{}^{137}Cs$ γ -ray. The scintillation performance of BGSO crystals clearly deteriorates with the increase of Ge content. However, the appropriate number of germanium ions doped to BSO crystal can improve its crystallization behavior and effectively restrain component segregation. It is expected that large size crystals of BGSO will be grown and applied to the dual readout calorimeter in the nearest future.

Opis:
The normal modes cannot be extracted even in the Pekeris waveguide when the source-receiver distance is very close. This paper introduces a normal mode extraction method based on a dedispersion transform (DDT) to solve this problem. The method presented here takes advantage of DDT, which is based on the waveguide invariant such that the dispersion associated with all of the normal modes is removed at the same time. After performing DDT on a signal received in the Pekeris waveguide, the waveform of resulting normal modes is very close to the source signal, each with different position and amplitude. Each normal mode can be extracted by determining its position and amplitude parameters by applying particle swarm optimization (PSO). The waveform of the extracted normal mode is simply the waveform of the source signal; the real waveform of the received normal mode can then be recovered by applying dispersion compensation to the source signal. The method presented needs only one receiver and is verified with experimental data.
