Opis:
The dynamics of the installation process of marine risers subjected to shoal/deep seawater is studied. The riser is assumed to be a cantilevered Euler‒Bernoulli beam. The upper end of the riser is clamped on the vessel or the drilling platform. The lower end of the riser is connected to the Blowout Preventer Stack (BOPs) and Lower Marine Risers Package (LMRP). The lateral fluid forces induced by the sea wave and sea current are introduced into the governing equations of motion. The lateral displacement and stress distributions of the riser are obtained by solving the governing equation of the riser via Galerkin’s discretisation scheme and a fourth-order Runge‒Kutta algorithm. The results indicate that the riser exhibits different behaviours under various depths because of the different distributions of the flow velocity ranging from the sea surface to the seabed. In the case of shoal water, the dynamics of the riser are dominated by the sea wave, while in the case of deep water it is affected mainly by the sea current velocity and sea surface wind velocity.

Background: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) play a vital role in bone regeneration. Poly-(l-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) scaffolds functionalised with modified rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) potato pectin, can modulate inflammation and promote bone regeneration in-vitro and in-vivo by modulating the action of the galactoside-binding galectin-3. In this study, we determined the binding affinity to galectin-3 of potato unmodified RG-I (PU) and its arabinose-deficient form (PA) and investigated the transcriptomic effects of PA treatment on human MSCs evaluated through in-silico pathway analysis in relation to galectin-3. Methods: The binding affinity of RG-I (PU and PA) to galectin-3 was assessed by tryptophan fluorescence spectroscopy. Human MSC (hMSC) isolated from the bone marrow of elderly patients (> 60yrs), were analysed by transcriptomic profiling. The effect of PA surface coating on gene expression was assessed in-silico by the ingenuity pathway analysis (IPA). Results: RG-I binds to galectin-3 with a binding affinity of 8.66 × $10^{−6}$ M. Galactose sidechains of PA resulted in ~ 10-fold increased binding of RG-I to galectin-3 compared with PU. Forty-two genes were found to be differentially expressed (DE) in hMSCs cultured on PA surface coating, with a false-discovery rate (FDR) < 0.1. IPA of these DE genes including LGALS3, encoding for galectin-3, showed enrichment for organismal disorders-abnormalities, connective tissue and skeletal muscular disorders, immunological and inflammatory diseases, and identified three gene networks: infectious diseases, immune & inflammatory response and cell cycle control. Conclusions: This study indicates that modified potato pectin (PA) can regulate the expression of a broad range of genes, including galectin-3, that are involved in cellular, inflammatory, and immunological functions of hMSCs and may potentially be used to promote bone regeneration via modulation of inflammation.

The cardinality of a minimum total dominating set in G is the total domination number. Opis:
Based on lots of surface movement and deformation observation data in loess gully region mine, the characters of surface movement and deformation caused by running activity are studied. Surface subsidence was up to 97% of the total subsidence in active period. Surface was moving with great crack and discontinuous deformation failure. The surface deformation developed rapidly, displacement angle is large, subsidence factor and horizontal movement factor is high. The results of surveying show that collapsible loess with the gully terrain lead to surface cracks which are quickly developed in loess. Crack failure are further intensified by mountain body slip induced by weight force. Meanwhile, subsidence factor and horizontal movement factor is gradually higher. Finally, the prediction model of horizontal strain and horizontal deformation were preliminarily established according to analysis results.
W artykule przedstawiono charakterystykę ruchów i deformacji powierzchni terenów żlebów lessowych, spowodowanych działalnością górniczą. Osiadania powierzchni w okresie prowadzonej eksploatacji wynosiły około 97% osiadań całkowitych. Podczas ruchów powierzchni dochodziło do powstawania dużych szczelin i deformacji nieciągłych. Deformacje te zachodziły gwałtownie i charakteryzowały się dużym kątem zasięgu oraz wysokim współczynnikiem przemieszczeń poziomych. Wyniki przeprowadzonych pomiarów geodezyjnych pokazują, że zapadający się less w terenie żlebowym prowadzi do spękań powierzchni terenu, które szybko się powiększają. Spękania propagują jeszcze bardziej, gdy następują ruchy osuwiskowe skał i gruntów na skutek zaburzenia równowagi pomiędzy siłami ciężkości. W takim przypadku współczynniki przemieszczeń pionowych i poziomych rosną. Wyniki przeprowadzonej analizy pozwoliły na przedstawienie wstępnego modelu charakteryzującego poziome deformacje terenu.

Opis:
Let γ(G) and γe(G) denote the domination number and exponential domination number of graph G, respectively. Henning et al., in [Hereditary equality of domination and exponential domination, Discuss. Math. Graph Theory 38 (2018) 275–285] gave a conjecture: There is a finite set ℱ of graphs such that a graph G satisfies (H) = γe(H) for every induced subgraph H of G if and only if G is ℱ-free. In this paper, we study the conjecture for subcubic graphs. We characterize the class ℱ by minimal forbidden induced subgraphs and prove that the conjecture holds for subcubic graphs.

Let G = (V,E) be a graph. A total restrained dominating set is a set S ⊆ V where every vertex in V∖S is adjacent to a vertex in S as well as to another vertex in V∖S, and every vertex in S is adjacent to another vertex in S. The total restrained domination number of G, denoted by $γ_r^t(G)$, is the smallest cardinality of a total restrained dominating set of G. We determine lower and upper bounds on the total restrained domination number of the direct product of two graphs. Also, we show that these bounds are sharp by presenting some infinite families of graphs that attain these bounds.

His296 of Zymomonas mobilis levansucrase (EC 2.4.1.10) is crucial for the catalysis of the transfructosylation reaction. The three-dimensional structures of levansucrases revealed the His296 is involved in the substrate recognition and binding. In this study, nine mutants were created by site-directed mutagenesis, in which His296 was substituted with amino acids of different polarity, charge and length. The substitutions of His296 with Arg or Trp retained partial hydrolysis and transfructosylation activities. The positively charged Lys substitution resulted in a 2.5-fold increase of sucrose hydrolysis. Substitutions with short (Cys or Ser), negatively charged (Glu) or polar (Tyr) amino acids virtually abolished both the activities. Analysis of transfructosylation products indicated that the mutants synthesized different oligosaccharides, suggesting that amino acid substitutions of His296 strongly affected both the enzyme activity and transfructosylation products.

ObjectivesThe objective of this study was to explore the relationship between seat armrest height and human neck comfort when using a smartphone while sitting on a passenger seat during the flight.Material and MethodsThe authors used a wireless angle-measuring instrument and subjective comfort scale to evaluate the changes of head flexion angle and neck comfort level of 24 young smartphone users in an aircraft simulated cabin.ResultsThe study results indicated that using a smartphone while sitting on a passenger seat during the flight would pose a larger discomfort to the neck, and the discomfort would be higher for gaming than reading tasks. Seat armrest height is related to the comfort level of the neck when using a smartphone, increasing the height of the armrest can effectively alleviate discomfort in this state.ConclusionsConsidering the prevalence of passengers using smartphones in aircraft, a seat armrest that can be properly adjusted in height, which can effectively reduce the risk of passenger head flexion angle and neck discomfort.

Opis:
The fatigue life prediction of wire ropes has two main characteristics: a large test sample size and uncertain factors. In this paper, based on the small number of wire rope fatigue life data, the grey particle filter method has been used to realize the fatigue life prediction of wire rope under different load conditions. First, the GOM(1,1) model is constructed and the reliability life data of wire rope is predicted under small sample size. Then, P-S-N curve of the dangerous part is determined by combining the equivalent alternating stress of the dangerous part of the wire rope during the fatigue test. Subsequently, the particle filter method is used to modify P-S-N curve. Finally, the fatigue life prediction model of wire rope is obtained based on fatigue damage accumulation, which realized the fatigue life prediction under different load conditions, and the results were compared with that from the test. The results show that the proposed method is effective and has high accuracy in wire rope fatigue life prediction under single, combined loading conditions and small sample size.
