Opis:
Passive source localization in shallow water has always been an important and challenging problem. Implementing scientific research, surveying, and monitoring using a short, less than ten meter long, horizontal linear array has received considerable attention in the recent years. The short array can be conveniently placed on autonomous underwater vehicles and deployed for adaptive spatial sampling. However, it is usually difficult to obtain a sufficient spatial gain for localizing long-range sources due to its limited physical size. To address this problem, a localization approach is proposed which is based on matched-field processing of the likelihood of the passive source localization in shallow water, as well as inter-position processing for the improved localization performance and the enhanced stability of the estimation process. The ability of the proposed approach is examined through the two-dimensional synthetic test cases which involves ocean environmental mismatch and position errors of the short array. The presented results illustrate the localization performance for various source locations at different signal- to-noise ratios and demonstrate the build up over time of the positional parameters of the estimated source as the short array moves at a low speed along a straight line at a certain depth.

Opis:
Purpose: Mechanical properties, as the inherent characteristics of cells, play a critical role in many essential physiological processes, including cell differentiation, migration, and growth. The mechanical properties of cells are one of the criteria that help to determine whether the tissue contains lesions at the single cell level, and it is very important for the early prevention and accurate diagnosis of diseases. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) makes it possible to measure the mechanical properties at single cell level in physiological state. This paper presents a novel method to calculate the mechanical properties of cancer cells more accurately through Atomic force microscopy. Methods: A new induced equation of Hertz’s model, called differential Hertz’s model, has been proposed to calculate the mechanical properties of cancer cells. Moreover, the substrate effect has also been effectively reduced through comparing the calculated mechanical properties of cell at different cell surface areas. Results: The results indicate that the method utilized to calculate the mechanical properties of cells can effectively eliminate the errors in calculation, caused by the thermal drift of AFM system and the substrate effect, and thus improve the calculation accuracy. Conclusion: The mechanical properties calculated by our method in this study are closer to the actual value. Thus, this method shows potential for use in establishing a standard library of Young’s modulus.

Opis:
The formulas of spherical triangle, which are widely used to solve various navigation problems, are the important basic knowledge of nautical mathematics. Because the sine rules and the cosine rules for the sides are the fundamental formulas to derive the other spherical triangle formulas, they are also called the genetic codes of the spherical triangle formulas. In the teaching process, teachers usually use the geometric method to derive and prove these fundamental formulas. However, the derivation of geometric methods is complicated and difficult to understand. To improve the teaching process, this paper proposes the three-dimensional rotation method, which is based on conversion of two cartesian coordinate frames using the rotation matrices. This method can easily and simultaneously derive the sine rules, the cosine rules for the sides, and the five-part formulas (I), and is also helpful to solve different kinds of spherical navigation problems.

Opis:
We investigate the evanescent field of a microfiber wrapped by colloidal crystals. The microfiber has the diameter of about 1 μm that is drawn from a single-mode fiber with an alcohol lamp. The colloidal spheres are further attached to the microfiber through thermal evaporation, then they self-assemble to crystal-like structures. The 400 nm, 590 nm, and 710 nm-diameter SiO2 colloidal spheres are used, respectively. The spectral responses are studied theoretically and experimentally, and the results agree with each other. It is revealed that the evanescent field of a microfiber could be modulated by the photonic band-gap of colloidal crystals. This characteristic is very useful in refractive index sensing for liquids.

Opis:
Heavy metal contamination due to mining activity is a global major concern because of its potential health risks to local inhabitants. The heavy metal contamination of surface water and ground water by mining activities in Gejiu tin-polymetallic mining area, Southwest China, was studied. Surface water and ground water were sampled and analyzed using AAS for Cr6+, Cd, As, Hg, Cu, Pb, Zn, Se, Fe and Mn. Analysis of HCO3–, Cl–, SO42–, F– and NO3– in water samples was also undertaken by ion chromatography. It was shown that none of water samples exceeded the guideline of Cr6+, Se and Hg, while the contamination degree of heavy metals was Mn > Fe > Cd > Zn > Pb > As > Cu, all of which were serious contamination except mild contamination for Cu. The ground waters were polluted much worse than surface water.

Opis:
A high energy combustion agent (tetraethylammonium decahydrodecaborate, BHN) was prepared by means of an ion exchange reaction (IER), and the prepared samples were characterized by the advanced diagnostic techniques of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) etc. The effects of BHN particles on the hazard and combustion properties of fuel rich solid propellants were investigated. The results showed that the BHN samples and fuel rich propellants containing BHN particles can be prepared successfully and solidified safely. The peak temperature of thermal decomposition and the heat of decomposition of the BHN samples prepared were 305.8 °C and 210.9 J•g-1 at a heating rate of 10 K•min-1, respectively. The burning rate and pressure exponent of fuel rich solid propellants decreases with increases in the fraction of BHN particles in the propellant formulation. Compared with the reference formulation (sample BP-1), the burning rate of the propellant with 10% mass fraction of BHN particles (sample BP-4) had decreased 30% at 3.0 MPa, and the pressure exponent had dropped from 0.44 to 0.41.

Opis:
The history of astronomy has shown that advances in sensing methods open up new windows to the Universe and often lead to unexpected discoveries. Quantum sensor networks in combination with traditional astronomical observations are emerging as a novel modality for multimessenger astronomy. Here we develop a generic analysis framework that uses a data-driven approach to model the sensitivity of a quantum sensor network to astrophysical signals as a consequence of beyond-the-standard model (BSM) physics. The analysis method evaluates correlations between sensors to search for BSM signals coincident with astrophysical triggers, such as black hole mergers, supernovae, or fast radio bursts. Complementary to astroparticle approaches that search for particlelike signals (e.g., weakly interacting massive particles), quantum sensors are sensitive to wavelike signals from exotic quantum fields. This analysis method can be applied to networks of different types of quantum sensors, such as atomic clocks, matter-wave interferometers, and nuclear clocks, which can probe many types of interactions between BSM fields and standard model particles. We use this analysis method to carry out the first direct search utilizing a terrestrial network of precision quantum sensors for BSM fields emitted during a black hole merger. Specifically, we use the global network of optical magnetometers for exotic physics (GNOME) to perform a search for exotic low-mass field (ELF) bursts generated in coincidence with a gravitational-wave signal from a binary black hole merger (GW200311_115853) detected by LIGO/Virgo on the March 11, 2020. The associated gravitational wave heralds the arrival of the ELF burst that interacts with the spins of fermions in the magnetometers. This enables GNOME to serve as a tool for multimessenger astronomy. Our search found no significant events and, consequently, we place the first lab-based limits on combinations of ELF production and coupling parameters.
