Opis:
The study was conducted to assess the effect of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment on the storage ability of fresh-cut pepper fruit. The cut fruit of pepper ‘Yecla F1’ were treated immediately after cutting and ‘Roberta F1’ before cutting. The 1-MCP at the concentrations of 1.0 μl·dm-3, 3.0 μl·dm-3, and 5.0 μl·dm-3 was applied to gas-tight containers with fruit for 20 hours at 20 °C. Peppers were stored at two temperatures: 0 °C and 5 °C, for up to 8 days. The treatment applied immediately after cutting slowed down the softening of pepper a little when fruit was stored at 0 °C, as well as during subsequent shelf life. The treatment applied before cutting did not reduce the softening, discoloration as well as rotting of pepper strips in cold conditions and shelf life. The sensory evaluation showed that 1-MCP treatment, applied before or after cutting, did not improve the quality of fresh-cut pepper during short term storage. The ethylene concentration after 4 days of cold storage was higher inside the bags with treated fresh-cut pepper, as compared to the bags with untreated samples. These results can give important direction for pepper fruit storage.

Opis:
The research was carried out on apples of the cultivar ‘Red Jonaprince’ in two storage seasons of 2015/2016 and 2016/2017. Both 1-MCP-treated and untreated apples were stored for 120 and 150 days at 2°C and 90–92% relative humidity in a regular cold store (NA) and in two atmospheric controlled storages, i.e. 2% CO2 and 2% O2 (CA) and 2% CO2 and 1.2% O2 (ULO). Apples were evaluated directly after the storage and after 7 days of simulated shelf-life. It was shown that storage conditions had significant impact on the value of apple quality traits. The effectiveness of the post-harvest 1-MCP treatment of apples manifested in different manner depending on the tested trait and storage conditions. 1-MCP delayed the softening of apples, but only those stored in CA and ULO. It effectively limited the decrease in titratable acidity, especially of apples from NA and ULO. A positive effect of 1-MCP in NA conditions on the soluble solids content was observed, as well as a reduction in the natural loss of weight and the percentage of fruits with the symptoms of fungal decay.

Opis:
Przedstawione w artykule badania dotyczyły wpływu 1-MCP na zmiany zawartości niektórych związków biologicznie czynnych w przechowywanych owocach pomidora. Pomidory odmiany Faustine F1 były zebrane w stadium dojrzałości: „zielone wyrośnięte” i „czerwone”.
Experiments on the influence of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) on the quality of tomato fruit were conducted. Tomatoes of cv. Faustine F1 were grown in field condition and harvested at two stages of maturity (mature green and fullred) were treated after harvest with 1-MCP in concentrations of 1.0 μl·L-1 or 2.0 μl·L-1 for 21 hours at 20o C. Than stored for 4 weeks 12.5°C or 20°C and 85-90% RH. Lycopene, phenolics and vitamin C contents before and after storage of the fruit were analyzed. Contents of lycopene, vitamin C and phenolics was significantly dependent on 1-MCP treatment and stages of maturity.

Opis:
Postharvest senescence is a critical problem of carnation cut flowers, limiting their transportation and subsequent marketing chain. This study was designed to assess whether the application of 1-methylcyclopropene (1 MCP), silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and nitric oxide (NO) released from donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) could prolong the vase life of cut carnations through an influence on the physiological and biochemical mechanisms involved in aging process. 1-MCP was used in the concentrations of 0, 100, 200, and 300 mg·m-3; AgNPs in the concentrations of 0, 50, 100, and 150 mg·dm-3; and SNP in the concentrations of 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 mM. All treatments significantly extended the cut flower life compared with untreated flowers, more so with 300 mg·m-3 of 1-MCP, 100 mg·dm-3 of AgNPs, or 0.3 mM of SNP. All these chemical compounds were able to considerably improve the relative water content (RWC), reduce the malondialdehyde (MDA) content and increase the membrane stability index (MSI) in petals and, therefore, maintain the membrane integrity. In addition, they decreased the activities of acetyl-CoA synthetase (ACS) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and, hence, depressed the production of ethylene in carnation cut flowers through downregulating the ethylene production, what prolonged the vase life. Altogether, the application of exogenous 1-MCP, AgNPs, or SNP may provide a promising avenue to improve the postharvest performance of carnation cut flowers.

Opis:
Early maturing peach (Prunus persica) cultivars can fetch good market value but face a lot of post-harvest problems that lead to the post-harvest losses. The 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) can provide new insights into plant ethylene responses and extend the shelf life and quality of fruits. Therefore, fruits of peach cultivar ‘Early Grand’ were dipped in various concentrations of 1-MCP (0, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 µg l–1), stored for 40 days at 8 ±2°C with 50% relative humidity and analyzed the fruits for physicochemical attributes at 10 days interval. The highest concentration of 1-MCP at 0.9 µg l–1 significantly improved the activity of antioxidants, catalase, free radical scavenging assay and total phenols. However, the peach fruits treated with 1MCP at 0.6 µgL–1 was effective in retaining the ascorbic acid, lowering the weight loss and fruit decay. Therefore, peach fruits can be treated with 1-MCP (0.6 µg l–1) solution for prolonging its shelf life up to 40 days under low temperature.
