Opis:: This article studies the propagation of light in asymmetric Cantor set fractal multi-layered structures. We show that well designed Cantor set structures can lead to broadband high reflectivity over a large wavelength range but, by adding asymmetries to the Cantor set, it is possible to control the reflectivity from 100% to nearly 0%.

Opis:: In studying characteristics of quasi-collinear acousto-optic tunable filters, we observed a new effect not explained by existing theories. As found, at high levels of driving power corresponding to high diffraction efficiency, a transition of energy from a diffracted light beam to a non-diffracted one vanished. In addition, the increase of the acoustic power was accompanied by a significant broadening of the filter frequency bandwidth. This effect could not be described in terms of the traditional consideration of acousto-optic diffraction based on a plane wave approximation and a model of a homogeneous acoustic column. The goal of this research was to develop a mathematical model capable of a correct description of the new effects. The paper examines a case of the quasi-collinear acousto-optic diffraction taking into account the two-dimensional spatial structure of the acoustic field. We gave a theoretical description of the effect of diffracted light beam intensity saturation at high level of acoustic driving power. It was shown that this effect was caused by the diffraction distortion of the acoustic field phase fronts in the plane of the acousto-optic interaction.

Opis:: Aimed at high resolution, an asymmetric point spread function has been obtained with good and bad sides by introducing three level asymmetric pupil functions. The good side has decreased side lobes while the bad side has increased side lobes. The asymmetry has been found to increase with the width of the edge strips within the slit aperture. On the other hand, there does not appear dependence of the asymmetry of the point spread function on the degree of amplitude apodization. But the magnitude of reduction of optical side-lobes is found to increase to a great extent by the amplitude apodization.

Opis:: We designed and fabricated metal-dielectric multilayers intended for passband filters in the ultraviolet range. We determined the dispersion characteristics by the Bloch approach to evanescent wave resonant coupling and calculated the spectral characteristics using the transfer matrix method while taking into account real dispersion and absorptive losses. We considered the influence of nanoscale interface roughness as a means to couple evanescent electromagnetic field to the propagating far field modes. In our structures both propagating and evanescent modes contribute to the overall performance, resulting in an enhanced transmission in the desired range, while retaining a strong suppression of undesired frequencies of more than four orders of magnitude. In our experiments we used radiofrequent sputtering of silver and silica and characterized our multilayers by UV-vis spectroscopy.

Opis:: Various imaging methods and techniques capable of reaching a nanometer spatial resolution are currently under development. One of them is an extreme ultraviolet microscopy, based on the Fresnel zone plates. In this paper a compact, high-repetition, laser-plasma EUV source, with a gas puff target, capable of emitting quasi-monochromatic radiation at 13.8 nm wavelength was used in the first demonstration of a desk-top EUV transmission microscopy with a spatial (half-pitch) resolution of 50 nm. EUV microscopy images of objects with various thicknesses and the spatial resolution measurements using the knife-edge test are presented.
