Opis:: Composite structures are made of two or more components with significantly different physical or chemical properties and they remain separate and distinct in a macroscopic level within the finished structure. This feature allows for introducing optical fiber sensors into the composite material. These sensors can demonstrate stress distribution inside tested material influenced by external tensions. Two types of the optical fiber sensors are used as the 3D structure. One of them is based on application of fiber Bragg grating inside the core of the fiber. Longitudinal stress changes parameters of the Bragg grating and simultaneously, spectral characteristics of the light transmitted through the fiber. The second one is based on application of highly birefringent fibers which, under external stress, introduce polarization changes of the output light.

Opis:: Liquid crystals exhibit large electro-optic effects which make them useful for a variety of applications as fast, compact, and tunable spectral filters, phase modulators, polarization controllers, and optical shutters. They were largely developed for liquid crystal displays and in the last decade for optical telecommunications, however their application in the field of optical imaging just started to emerge. These devices can be miniaturized thus have a great potential useful in miniature optical imaging systems for biomedical applications. Using a collection of tunable phase retarders one can perform: 1. Stokes parameters imaging for skin and eye polarimetric imaging; 2. Tunable filtering to be used for hyperspectral imaging, fluorescence microscopy, and frequency domain optical coherence tomography; 3. Adaptive optical imaging and eye aberrations correction; 4. Phase shift interferometric imaging; 5. Variable frequency structured illumination microscopy. Basic optics of liquid crystals devices is reviewed and some novel designs are presented in more detail when combined to imaging systems for a number of applications in biomedical imaging and sensing.

Opis:: It has been recently experimentally demonstrated that propagation and polarization properties of the photonic liquid crystal fibers can be effectively tuned with the electric field. In particular, effective electric tuning of the phase birefringence has been obtained in the photonic liquid crystal fibers based on the high index glasses. Accurate numerical simulations of the impact of electric field on the guiding properties of the photonic liquid crystal fibers require complex methods, in which all important physical properties of the liquid crystal are taken into account (optical anisotropy, molecular orientation and relatively high losses). In this paper we present two different numerical approaches based on the finite element method. First one utilizes the simplified assumption of the "collective tilt" of molecules, and gives rough estimation of the phase birefringence tuning range. The second approach is much more rigorous, since electrically induced reorientation of the liquid crystal is calculated with a Q-tensor method giving the values of the inhomogeneous permittivity tensor. The value of the electrically induced birefringence calculated with the second method is in a good agreement with the experimental results.

Opis:: Chiral nematic liquid crystals are very interesting materials to infiltrate photonic crystal fibers since they are characterized by unique optical properties such as selective Bragg reflection, circular dichroism, and optical activity. In this paper the latest experimental results of the photonic crystal fibers filled with new chiral nematic liquid crystals are presented. Spectral properties of the light propagating in the photonic liquid crystal fibers have been measured and analyzed.

It appeared that polarization mode dispersion strongly influences a degree of polarization that depends on coherence of the light source used and simultaneously diminishes dynamics of the output signal.

Opis:: We studied the polarization properties of four photonic band gap fibers with elliptical core and different cladding geometries. To do so we relied on a fully vectorial calculation method, which uses a hybrid edge/nodal finite element approach with perfectly matched layer absorbing boundary conditions. We determined the spectral dependence of the confinement loss for the fundamental modes of orthogonal polarizations. Our results show that, for the four structures studied, the polarization dependent loss is so high that they can be used as fiber-optic polarizers in the full band gap range.

Opis:: In the paper we present results of the research on polarization mode dispersion changes inside the polarimetric optical fiber sensors based on highly birefringent optical fibers embedded into composite materials with different angular orientations of the optical axes. Based on measurements made for different types of highly birefringent optical fiber sensors we have shown that strain sensitivities after lamination process are different in comparison to the data obtained before lamination. Our results indicate that polarization mode dispersion in side-hole highly birefringent fibers under axial stress strongly depends on fiber orientation in the composite material suggesting that orientation of the polarization axes of the highly birefringent fiber can be responsible for behavior of the fiber inside the composite material.

The second one is based on application of highly birefringent fibers which under external stress introduce polarization changes in the output light. These sensors placed into one fiber give a possibility to the measure two external tensions separately.

Opis:: The present paper deals with investigations concerning optical fibre current sensors. They are mainly applied in measurements of the intensity of the electric current in the power lines as so-called optical transformers of the electrical current. The most important advantages of fibre current sensors are: safety of service, insulating power as well as their insensitiveness to electromagnetic interference. The investigations were concentrated on designing of adequate sensing fibre, and particularly on the choice of an adequate kind of glass, of which this fibre could be made. Besides, also the head of the fibre current sensor was designed, basing on the suggested and produced sensing fibre. The paper presents the results of magneto-optic tests of the glass and the sensing fibre.
