Opis:
In this study, styrene(St)/2-ethyl hexyl acrylate(2-EHA) based surface sizing materials were developed with four different cationic monomers (CM), namely diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride (DADMAC), [2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] trimethylammonium chloride (MATMAC), [3-(methacryloylamino) propyl]-trimethyl ammonium chloride (MAPTAC), (viniylbenzyl) trimethyl-ammonium chloride (VBTMAC). Ternary polymerization was realized with emulsion polymerization, by using 2,2'-azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (A) as initiator. Thermal properties of the synthesized terpolymers were determined with differential scanning calorimeter and thermal gravimetric analysis. Differential scanning calorimeter results showed that glass transition temperature (T_{g}) values of polymers were not dependent on the types of cationic monomers, and were found about 44-45°C. Ion exchange capacities of the terpolymers were determined. The latexes produced were used as sizing materials for paper surface treatment. Then critical surface properties of the papers sized such as water resistance (Cobb value) and contact angle were measured. It was found that the best, i.e. the lowest Cobb results were obtained when MATMAC and MAPTAC cationic monomers were used in terpolymers.

Opis:
Two component mixtures of a fluorescent perylene dye (derivative of 3,4,9,10-perylenetetracarboxylic acid) with arachidic acid in the whole range of mole fraction have been investigated in form of molecular monolayers at the air-water interface at different pH of the water subphase. Miscibility of the components in the Langmuir monolayers have been examined for pH 3 and pH 13 of the subphase. Using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique the monolayers were transferred onto freshly cleaved mica sheets and morphology of the films was analyzed using atomic force microscopy working in tapping mode. Investigation of the components miscibility in monolayers, determined by mean molecular area and surface pressure analysis reveals different behavior of the mixtures depending on pH of the subphase. Atomic force microscopy morphology images of the Langmuir-Blodgett films strongly support conclusion about the components mixing and coverage of the mica surface. It has been found that onto acidic subphases components are only miscible in vestigial form, whereas on alkaline the miscibility is strongly affected by the dye concentration.

Opis:
Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films of some organic dyes (perylene-like dyes, derivatives of 4-amino-naphthali-mide, derivatives of naphthoylene-benzi-mida-zole, azo dyes) and their mixtures with thermotropic liquid crystal or arachidic acid have been investigated. Surface pressure as a function of the mean molecular area for the Langmuir films were measured and information about organization of molecules at the air-water interface has been obtained. Absorption spectra in situ for the Langmuir films and both absorption and fluorescence spectra for Langmuir-Blodgett films were recorded. The results obtained from spectroscopic studies have led to conclusions about formation of self-aggregates of dye molecules, both in ground and excited states, at the phases interfaces.

Opis:
A study of azo dye/liquid crystal mixtures in monolayers formed at an air-water interface (the Langmuir films) and at a solid surface (the Langmuir-Blodgett films) has been performed. Five azo dyes with various molecular structure and the liquid crystal 4-octyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (8CB) have been used. The dyes have been added to the liquid crystal at various molar fractions. Surface pressure and surface potential versus mean molecular area isotherms for the Langmuir films have been recorded and information about intermolecular interactions at the air-water interface has been obtained. On the basis of electronic absorption measurements for the Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films the conclusions about the ability of dyes molecules to form self-aggregates at the interfaces have been drawn. The influence of the dye molecular structure and its concentration on aggregates' geometry has been found.
