Opis:
Diffusion of titanium was examined in the field emission microscope using the fluctuation autocorrelation method. A thick titanium layer (about three monolayers) deposited on a tungsten tip was used. A temperature range of 1260-1410 K was found where diffusion can be described in a hydrodynamic approximation. In this temperature range the diffusion coefficient seems to comply with Arrhenius rule for the activation energy of 1.31 eV and D$\text{}_{0}$ = 3×10$\text{}^{-7}$ cm$\text{}^{2}$s.

Opis:
The interaction potential of a pair of adsorbed molecules differ from that of the same molecules in free space, because of the response of the substrate. This response does not influence much the short-range repulsive part of the potential; only the long-range attractive part is affected. The change due to the influence of the substrate has been the subject of extensive study, both theoretically and experimentally. In this paper the problem is formulated in terms of the dynamic charge response properties of the interacting pair, and applications to the case of adsorbed molecules on model metal surfaces is described.

Opis:
In a field emission tube with two probe-holes the cross-correlation functions of current fluctuations from potassium submonolayers on tungsten have been investigated. The measurements were carried out in the temperature range of 290-430 K and with coverages between 0.05 and 0.87. The experimental correlation curves were approximated by a sum of three exponential functions revealing three components with different time constants τ$\text{}_{i}$ and amplitudes R. The temperature dependence of the amplitudes R$\text{}_{2}$ and R$\text{}_{3}$ is discussed in terms of collective flip-flop processes.

Opis:
The magnetic anisotropy and magnetostriction in nanocrystalline grains in non-magnetic or magnetic matrix (nanoparticles or nanocrystalline materials) differ from their bulk properties. The interactions between atoms at the interface play the important role in these magnetic properties. In this paper the magnetic dipolar contribution to magnetostriction energy has been calculated for spherical crystal grains (of bcc and fcc symmetry) with interface layer of atoms possessing different magnetic moment. Total magnetoelastic energy of the sphere-interface system is a sum of magnetoelastic energy of the sphere, energy of the interactions between the sphere and the interface and also the energy of the interface. It was shown that magnetoelastic energy depends on the sphere size and interface thickness.

Opis:
2D-photonic crystal has the close packed hexagonal structure of metallized spheres. The selection rules are first necessary thing for understanding of interactions between differently polarized light and artificial photonic structure. This problem is the object of our paper. Known methods of group theory allow to solve such problems. However, the knowledge about symmetry of structure is the starting point of them. Usually the X-ray diffraction provides such information about natural 3D-crystals. Such assumptions so far have to do after the visual research of photonic structures in practice. Further these assumptions may be confirmed (or vice versa) by experimental research of optical response of photonic structures. We assumed that the symmetry of photonic structure is close to 2D (P6mm) group. Group-theoretical calculations were provided using the system of computer mathematics Maple. Both polarizations, normal to surface and parallel to that plane, were taken into consideration. The obtained selections rules were confirmed later by independent experiments.

Opis:
Using video tracking we study configurational and melting properties of a finite number (64) of 6 mm sized disc magnets moving on an air layer produced by an air table to imitate two-dimensional (2D) crystal. It is shown that velocity of air flow allows us to influence temperature. Analysing trajectories of particles has shown the transition from hexagonal to square lattice and after it to liquid phase with underlying square shell structure.

Opis:
The field emission current fluctuation method was applied to investigate surface self-diffusion of tungsten on the (311) and (711) regions (along the zone line (211)-(100)) of a tungsten microcrystal (in the form of the field emitter tip of radius about 300 nm) in the temperature range 500-850 K. The surface diffusion parameters were obtained from spectral analysis of the current fluctuations. The results are discussed from the aspects of the substrate structure.

Opis:
The asymptotic form of the indirect pseudopotential interaction of noble metal adatoms on jellium is used to interpret the phenomena arising during thermal treatment of the noble metal submonolayers on W(110). It is shown that the 2D condensation is an activated process. The growth of open clusters needs lower activation energy than the close-packed island formation. Therefore the open clusters should predominate at low temperatures and low coverages, as it is observed experimentally. On the basis of calculation of the total energy of submonolayers as a function of coverage Θ the experimental measurement of desorption energy vs. coverage is discussed.

Opis:
The chromium nitride thin films have became more and more popular in the last years because of their very good physical, chemical and mechanical properties. The present study relates to thermal stability of hard thin films of chromium nitride CrN, carried out physical vapour deposition. We studied the influence of the annealing temperature on the morphology of CrN films, deposited on silicon substrate using magnetron sputtering. The characterizations are examined using scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Annealing treatments in $N_2$ at 600-1000C for 1 h are performed on CrN coating samples for 530 nm thickness. At low temperature, the results show a thermal stability of these coatings. The $Cr_2O_3$ phase is completely replaced by the CrN phase at temperature above 1000°C. The results given by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction are compared.

Opis:
The self-diffusion of iridium was studied by means of field electron microscopy. The measurements, based on the well-known process of surface build-up, were carried out under the UHV conditions within the temperature range of 790-935K. The activation energy for the diffusion was determined to be equal to 2.10±0.10eV/atom (48.4±2.3kcal/mol). This value is compared with activation energies for self-diffusion on other metal surfaces, as well as with those for self-diffusion of single iridium atoms and clusters on iridium, known from the field ion microscopy measurements.
